Nohome,

Keep in mind that while it is true that God has…given the world the true path to salvation and that path is the Roman Catholic faith…all other paths are less safe.
Unless you’re an altar boy…

I’d say the U.S. Bishops meet the definition of organized crime. They have repeatedly worked together to cover up serious crimes, and obstruct justice.

RICO I think applies to racketeering. I may be wrong.

aquarius,

It equates to an attack against the Catholic Church because the Church is being singled out for sins that people across the spectrum are guilty of and at much greater percentages in some cases and yet no-one wants to change the statutes of limitations on those cases.
The proposed change in the law says nothing about Catholics. It doesn’t single out Catholics in any way.

In no way are the parishiners anything like shareholders of a corporation. How are parishiners responsible for the actions of a priest that is alleged to commit the crime many years ago?
It’s similar to a situation where current shareholders bear the burden for things the corporation’s agents did thirty years ago. Most didn’t even own the stock thirty years ago. Asbestos is one example.

However, I did not say parishoners were responsible for things a priest did many years ago. I said they were being hurt the same way stockholders are being hurt.

aquarius,

It is my understanding (perhaps I am wrong) that the bill targets private institutions and came about because of the Catholic abuse crisis. If that is true, then the bill has been created essentially to attack the Church, because if it really about protecting children then the bill should focus on all abuse of kids and minors, not just priavte institutions.

demetrios,

Altar boys are likely more safe now then in any other place on earth. There is such an intense light on all matters “Catholic” that abuse is (joyfully) incredibly low and will remain low, though not zero.

Since the bill covers many more institutions and people than the Catholic church, it’s not valid to say it is designed to attack he Church.

However, the impetus for the bill probably was the actions of priests and bishops. The Church showed there was a problem. The bill recognizes that the problem may exist in many areas of society.

I agree. Everybody is now on their best behavior, thanks be to God.
