Indeed, Robin Williams is Episcopal, I believe. He’s played Jews, however, and has a tendency to use Yiddish expressions in his humor. I’ve never heard officially that he’s Jewish, only that he had a lot of Jewish friends growing up.

Peace and God bless!
Not to mention that he doesn’t look remotely like Pope JP II. Now Jon Voight looks a lot like JP II.

I would think that in Eastern Europe it’s not uncommon to have Jewish ancestry if you trace back far enough.

His mother was a Christian Scientist. His childhood was rather interesting.

Many years ago - perhaps 20? - I read “The 13th Tribe” by Arthur Koestler. He describes the conversion of a Turkic people called the Khazars or Chazars who lived in an area near the Black and Caspian Seas, south-east of now Hungary.

These people were pagans and “turkic” racially. Their King, the Kagan, was pressurized by the three nearby religions: Byzantine Christianity, Islam and Judean - or Iudean (I think that the specific word “Jew” didn’t exist at that time.)

The Kagan’s decision was very “political” - he chose not to antagonize the Christians or the Islamics - by converting to Judaism. Most of his nobles and, ultimately, his people chose to follow his lead. These people were dispersed in the western and northern lands following Mongol pressure from the East, and became the main base for European Ashkenazic Jews.

Wouldn’t it be interesting to really find out who among us are NOT decendents of the 10 “lost” tribes?

Most of his school friends were Jewish and they proved to be much more accepting of Williams than the other classmates had been. Williams says, with some pride, that as an ‘honorary Jew’ he went to 14 bar mitzvahs in a single year. His new friends also provided him with a working knowledge of Yiddish which survives now in the words and phrases that sprinkle his conversations and his stage act.
Ahh yes, I do remember very similar stories published about JPII twenty years ago.

A bit like what happened to England then
Quite the opposite, really! It appears that there was not the pressure from the Kagan for his people to follow his example as there was with King Henry and the populace of England.

Nor was any quarter given to the Irish by the (by now) English protestants. To be a Catholic in Ireland meant to be officially denied education AND the possession of property, etc. This sort of pressure appears not to have been used by the Kagan.

I havn’t read all of the previous posts so excuse me if this point has been brought up before. I believe we are all Jewish (I mean we Catholics)…not by race but by religion. The only difference for us the Messiah has come.

I’ve heard many theories about JPII being “Jewish” but most of them have come from anti-Semetic websites. For instance, jewwatch.com/jew-religions-christianity-penetration-pope-john-paul-2-jewish.html. Most other “traditionalist” Catholic websites try and claim that he was Jewish in order to cast doubt on people that the Church has somehow changed… Until I see evidence I won’t believe it.

Hunter Gibson (Mel’s father) has also claimed JPII as Jewish. This theory isn’t new among the rad-trad crowd.

The Pope was Jewish says historian

LINEAGE: Pope John Paul

A MANCHESTER historian has claimed that Pope John Paul II was Jewish.

Yaakov Wise says his study into the the maternal ancestry of Karol Josez Wojtyla (John Paul II’s real name) has revealed startling conclusions.

Mr Wise, a researcher in orthodox Jewish history and philosophy, said the late Pope’s mother, grandmother and great-grandmother were all probably Jewish and came from a small town not far from Krakow.

Jesus was Jewish.

Actually, I think modern day talmudic Jews are the descendents spiritually and indeed biologically of the New Testament Pharisees, no?

Whether or not the Pope had Jewish blood, he was still very Catholic and to deny that is crazy. I would also think Pope JPII would have admitted to his mother being Jewish if this were true. I really don’t think there is any merit to the story.
