I just finished George Bernard Shaw’s “Saint Joan”, which was funny if Whiggish.

The Way: What Every Protestant Should Know About the Orthodox Church, Clark Clarkton

The Complete Works of H.P. Lovecraft (off and on)
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

Green & McKnight (eds.), *Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels. *It’s so interesting, and on the whole so well written, that I’m (slowly) reading it all the way through. There are only one or two entries where the evangelical authors are clearly and assertively denying Catholic doctrine, so it doesn’t really matter, because those bits are instantly recognizable and you just let it go.

When I’m not reading that, I’m reading some of Simenon’s Maigret detective stories, which are quite addictive.

Two great finds with Benedictine themes from the used book section of my parish bookstore:

One Foot in the Cradle, the autobiography of Dom Hubert van Zeller, OSB,

and

The Benedictine Order in the United States; An Interpretive History, by Joel Rippinger, OSB

“Church of Spies: The Pope’s Secret War Against Hitler” by Mark Rieibling. Fascinating study of the Church’s Intelligence war against the Nazis. Highly recommended and exahustively researched.

*Les Miserables * by Victor Hugo
One of my favorite novels. The most interesting character, in my view, is Marius’s grandfather, who is always left out of the movie adaptations. All the ones I’ve seen, anyway.

The Exceptional Seven Percent by the Popcaks
Learning the virtues that lead you to God Romano Guardini

“My God! What a Life!” the autobiography of Monsignor James A. O’Callaghan.
Father O was the founding pastor of St. John Vianney parish here in Los Angeles.
