While sex evolved as a procreative process,
Consider 2 men engaged in a sexual act to its natural end for each of them. The act emits their gametes. That is quite central to the nature of the act. They “exchange” genetic material. Does something seem amiss when you realize both are men? It does not appear to be a coherent evolutionary outcome, does it? As Prodigal says - why can’t they have kids? Do you think we just need more evolution?

That sex is useful for one thing doesn’t mean it isn’t useful for other things. Co-opting of traits is common throughout biology.

You certainly see examples in the animal kingdom, particularly among other Great Apes, of sexual activity that does not have a procreative component.
Ahh, yes, some animals eat their young so why can’t we?
This sounds dangerously like a reducto ad absurdum.
So if God can tolerate a couple of female bonobo chimps having a [same sex encounter] I’m sure God is a big enough fellow to be able to tolerate John and Jeff getting hitched.
How do you know that God “tolerates” bonobos behaviour. Oh, wait…
I don’t know, and neither do you. I’m merely pointing out that same-sex sexual encounters in the natural world happen, and there appear to be social reasons, at least as far as bonobos go, for why such encounters may occur. In other words, a classic case of a trait (sexual reproduction) that has been co-opted by that particular species for a non-procreative purpose, but a purpose that still as a positive behavior for bonobo tribes; literally a “make love not war” kind of peacemaking.

Try not to change the subject please. The old idea that we should condemn all things equally is not part of this very specific situation. Same-sex marriage is a recent social problem created by people who convinced a handful of people to make it legal in the US. But nothing has changed. Babies are still born the same way. Men and women get married and those who were never taught how to have a proper relationship before the ceremony are more likely to divorce. It’s not rocket science. But if the people are lied to long enough they’ll do or try almost anything.

“make sex not war” I was there when the Hippies were pushing their fake slogan.

For human beings, the goal is pleasure over responsibility, with as much pleasure as possible.

Therefore it must be good and appropriate for human? Right, that follows. 🤔
And why not. Human social behaviors are pretty similar to the other great apes, and very similar to Bonobos. Bonobos are the “lovin’ ape”, generally much more peaceful than P. troglodytes (the common chimpanzee), though, mind you, the common chimp has some rather negative behaviors also exhibited in humans, like those tribal wars where a chimp tribe will invade a neighboring chimp tribe and literally slaughter them. You know, sort of like what the Israelites did to the Canaanites in Joshua.

niceatheist, you keep talking as if reductio ad absurdums are bad. It’s a valid and highly respected form of argument. Are you aware of that?

Well, just speculating here, but as I gave the example of another species (and one rather close to humans), bonobos have same-sex encounters that aren’t procreative, but at least in some circumstances seem to serve as a means of building or restoring social cohesion, or in some cases with males possibly to assert dominance. Again, this shouldn’t be surprising. While sex evolved as a procreative process, it’s yet another example of how a particular trait evolved for one purpose can be co-opted for another.

So the short answer is that not all sex is procreative, and this has been true long before humans even came on the scene.
You still don’t seem to be getting my objection. You conceded above, for the sake of argument, “suppose God exists”. And you said that, under that assumption, you still didn’t see why God would object to homosexual activity. My point is: if He didn’t object to it, then why would He make it fruitless? It’s like saying, “I have nothing against gay people, but here, let me make them barren.”

So I’m just arguing for a conditional: if God exists, then God either is trying to indicate to us that homosexual activity is wrong or God hates gay people.

And all of this presupposes that God feels as Biblical writers suggest He does Since other aspects of His creation use sex non-procreatively, and in fact use same-sex encounters in just that fashion, I would surmise that clearly God has no problem with same-sex encounters, at least in some circumstances, raising the question as to why, if non-procreative and homosexual acts serve a purpose for creatures as closely related to us as Bonobo chimps, why is H. sapiens, with shares a great deal of its behavioral patterns with Bonobos, decreed to only have sex that can lead to procreation (or at least some reasonable facsimile thereof, since there’s no prohibition against sterile people having sexual relations).

I’m not denying homosexuality has long been a major cultural taboo, and that’s really my point. The writers of such books as Leviticus and much later St. Paul’s admonition against “men lying with men” are there not because some all powerful being decided that H. sapiens, unlike P. paniscus, could only have procreative sex. I can forgive St. Paul. He had no idea Bonobos existed, and lived in a culture that reviled homosexuals. That’s not really an excuse now.

Then you must also surmise that God would have no problem with humans emulating any other animal
behaviours.

Genuinely curious on a few points. If someone is gay, do you think that they should never have a partner? Or that they should find someone of the opposite sex and ‘pretend’ to enjoy their company?

I don’t believe that we get to choose who we are attracted to any more than we can chose who we love or our favourite food,

I’m aware that Christianity teaches that a variety of actions/sins are wrong and ultimately accountable for, but how could you possibly be penalised for how you feel?
I’m sure with the great deal of opposition that gay people have, if they could change; they would.

Other than the more married households there are, the Better it iis for the economy

Imagine if people’s lives were up for discussion based on any other prohibited acts from the bible? if people who wear mixed fabric, or eat the wrong meat on Friday were prohibited from getting married.

The argument that marriage and the ability to penetrate one woman with one man for the sole purpose of procreation- I’m sorry, but I imagine if a straight man were to cheat on his wife with another man, I’m sure the wife would call that cheating, the idea that ‘seed has to be spilled’… what about men for can’t perform for a variety of reasons? Do the people who believe the things on here really only become intimate with a view to impregnate the woman? What if they’re are too old, or unwell? What if he can’t ‘finish’?
Imagine if a man did to a woman what it is that you think two women do? (Other than penile penetration obviously) do you class same sex sex as mere affection? If it’s not sex then you’d be ok to do it to a family member right?

I can’t imagine why anyone could actually care what other people do, especially in bed.
It’s quite a peculiar preoccupation, you must admit. The only way same sex marriage could have any impact on your life would be if you wished to marry someone of the same sex.

I honestly don’t mean to appear antagonistic, I am genuinely intrigued. Why would one have such strong feelings? On something so irrelevant to you (unless you’re gay obviously)

There are so many teachings in the bible, which people ignore, or alter to fit this day and age, but the only ‘sin’ that is used to preach hate is the one that is interpreted to apparently ban people from acting on they feel.

If you believe that it’s wrong, then I’m sure you should be praying for the afflicted. If you believe it’s a choice, then I recommend that you attempt to find some who is the ‘wrong sex’ attractive.

What good does preaching hate do? What could possibly be so bad a consequence of strangers being happy?

I think that the immense sense of self importance is noteable. Imagine believing that people who have no idea even who you are, would consider your opinion when it comes to being happy. It’s a very egotistical and vindictive way of life. Not at all catholic.
Bless you for thinking that you have the power to make people miserable but I can’t imagine this level of zero tolerance and lack of respect for fellow humans would ever go down well you get to the pearly gates.

Like I said, really not antagonistic, I’m just curious.

Congratulations on your first Post!

What is a partner? Do you mean a sexual relationship? Catholics hold the view that sexual relations belong in marriage, and that marriage is the sexual relationship of man+woman.

Peoples lives are not “up for discussion”. SSM is up for discussion because marriage is a publicly proclaimed institution. We ought to agree what it means.
I can’t imagine why anyone could actually care what other people do, especially in bed…The only way same sex marriage could have any impact on your life would be if you wished to marry someone of the same sex.
What people “do in bed” is by and large a private matter, best kept that way. Marriage is a public matter and redefining its meaning has considerable impact as people become obligated to contribute to SSM ceremonies (eg. as service providers) and children are subjected to an expanded breadth of “sex education”.
What good does preaching hate do?
None at all. But it has become quite commonplace for those favouring SSM to label those who do not “haters”.

Best wishes for your time on CAF.

Preaching hate?? Is it preaching hate to say that marriage is only between one man and woman like Christ said? Is it hateful to explain to someone that they are sinning and to try and prevent them from going to hell and having eternal punishment? Are you saying we shouldn’t care about the soul of humans and allow them to go on a destructive path so that way they are happy? Homosexual acts are a sin. It doesn’t do anyone good if we accept these acts which could send someone to hell.

It is going to come across as hateful to some. Even though such a statement attributes this as the view of Christ it will be viewed as the personal view of the speaker. It might also be lumped in with the many other things that were said to make people with sasmesex attraction unlikeed and hated.

Well I hope it doesn’t make people who are same sex attracted disliked and hated. I after all am same sex attracted, but I doubt that would mean anything. They’d probably still label me as a “homophobe” which doesn’t make sense

Good point, Joe. Can anyone explain to me why people who are attracted to the same sex but believe that acting on it is harmful to them are portrayed as homophobes? Would you call people who believe that eating meat is bad for you carniphobes?

I’m not sure how it could be said without sounding hateful to some. We live in a world in which there are hateful statements that are often communicated in very subtle statements and I don’t know how it would be separated from those.
