My mother went to the 10:00 mass today and I am sorry to report the following in her words:

“I decided that I would go to St. Patrick’s at 10:00 rather than St. Monica’s at 8:30. It was a definite goodbye to St. Patrick’s. I was fighting back tears during a good bit of the Mass. Fr. Rico does the best he can. I was glad it wasn’t Fr. Refugio. After I received communion I couldn’t help but stop at the end of the altar rail, look back at the wasted kneeling space and shake my head sadly. I was at least fortunate to be able to receive from the priest, considering that there were 5 extraordinary ministers, including a couple of chalice bearers…in a really weird arrangement. It was heart breaking. The church was not filled by any means, and I didn’t see anyone I knew, other than Fr. Rico.”

She had stopped going after they began persecuting those who knelt to receive communion but decided to try today to see if there had been any changes.

I really wish someone who had inside knowledge of the situation would try to appeal Fr. Hennessy’s case to Rome! I can’t help but think that someone sabotaged him because of his orthodoxy.

Please keep up the prayers for Fr. Hennessy.

Thank you for the report. How sad! You mentioned your mom went to St. Monica’s–someone else mentioned that as a good parish. Can you kneel at St. Monica’s?

This is just so sad, and so unnecessary. I just don’t get it. Even the Lutheran church I visited last week, very modernist since the days I was Lutheran years ago, had an altar rail, and not only did people kneel to receive Communion-- the entrance to the sanctuary was closed right before Communion so the rail went all the way around on three sides. If Lutherans can do it, why can’t we??

Fr. Rico used to be our parochial vicar–he was wonderful; I hope he is doing well–he went out of his way to make me feel welcome as a new parishioner. (For that matter, Fr. Refugio also used to be our PV–his masses were extremely well done and very reverent. So I totally don’t get this apparent new development. What on earth is going on???)

Unfortunately, there is no altar rail at St. Monica’s as of yet. They are getting ready to build a new church and with the priests that are there, one could certainly hope (and pray) that a rail would be built in the new church!! It might be a good parish to get involved with so you can influence from the inside.

To be fair to Fr. Refugio - although he is the new pastor who has implemented all the changes, he may very well be acting based on orders from the chancery. It is hard to know what is going on behind the scenes. I have encountered many very orthodox-seeming priests over the years who were opposed to “traditional” liturgical practices for whatever reason. In addition, a good number of bishops seem to bristle at the idea of priests celebrating mass ad orientem or having the faithful kneel at the rail for communion.

And yet…the Lutherans kneel. Someone ought to tell the bishops!

This makes me so sad. I really know the Catholic Church is Christ’s true Church on earth, and that he called me into it, because if it weren’t for that Truth, and the Eucharist, I would so become Lutheran again…my whole family heritage going way back is Lutheran, and I miss that so much.

The Eastern Catholics don’t kneel to receive, but they receive on the tongue and the priest celebrates ad orientem. Their traditions are different, but they’re very ancient.

I guess it’s not so much that fact that we in the Latin rite don’t kneel, but the apparent disobedience and arrogance with which it’s insisted upon. I think I just need to quit thinking about it all so much, just go to Mass, try not to get upset, and try not to get too involved in any Church activities…the more I’m involved, the more upset I get. Just get in, get out, and be involved bringing Christ to the world in my daily life. If I think about it all too much, I really get discouraged.

Sorry–I’m getting snarky again…

Another thing I don’t get. The Pope has totally removed the need to get the bishop’s permission for a priest to celebrate ad orientem, or the extraordinary form…so why aren’t more priests doing it??? They don’t need the bishop’s permission. THEY DON’T NEED THE BISHOP’S PERMISSION!

Hi guys–I feel bad about being such a negative influence; I’d been feeling so great after a recent good confession and then here I allow myself to think all these bad thoughts, and to dump them on you all…please pray for me, and I’ll pray for St. Patrick’s…

I have been informed that
Father Hennessy is on leave. If you would like to contact him you can write him a letter care of the Archbishop’s office.
I asked if he was permitted to respond.
It is his discretion whether he responds or not.

Hey everyone, let me be the 1st to say, that st,patricks has changed so much,I was really hoping that when i got here,i would have heard an update on father hennessy, but nothing here either

I visited st.patricks and the crucifixes have been taken down from the alter and the picture they had of the Holy father next to the chapel is gone also, that is just wrong, and the few people i did talk to said, said that the new pastor is trying his best to make st,patricks all hispanic, the confessional in the hall way is gone, it does not feel like the same church at all

the only thing that hasn’t changed is i went to the 5pm sunday mass, and the same guy that does the music is still there,i really liked his mixture of music, its a youth mass i think, because he does contempory christian music, and he did AVE MARIA in latin,he did two about Mary hail mary gentle woman i think ] and he has a great pianist playing for him, If i go back, that will be the mass i go to

he also told me that the church has changed so much, but he still does the mass with no music if he does not have a piano player, but he said it does not really feel like home to him,and i said for me too

to let everyone know, they did remove the kneelers, but i did go up to recieve communion at the rail, you can still do that

How sad. I’m curious that you are still able to kneel at the altar rail and receive; I thought another poster had said people were specifically forbidden to kneel at the altar rail, and that communion wouldn’t be given to people who did that. Is this only at the 5 p.m. Sunday mass that this is allowed?

How can they possibly think that removing crucifixes and pictures of the Pope will appeal to Hispanics???

What on earth is going on over there?

:gopray:

the last 2 times i went there was for the 5pm mass on sunday and those two times i went up to the rail with everyone else but this last time was when i noticed that the kneelers were gone, but i do not really care about that, i go there for the music,if you have not been before you should go, the music is great

I do not know what is going on over there, they took down the picture of the holy father, and replaced it with a picture of the aux. bishop,i like him,but i would not replace a picture of the holy father with it,and i have never agreed with taking down the crucifixes on the alter, its just not right to me

Some Eastern Catholics receive CITH from the beginning.

That’s interesting. The Byzantine rite I attended had intinction with a spoon so CITH would have been impossible. Maybe some eastern rites have the round Hosts?

Where they didn’t ban it.
?? I’m clearly not understanding something here…where I went there was a little spoon, and the host (not sure what they call it in eastern rites) was little cubes dipped in the precious blood. Not sure what was banned…can you explain?

CITH was banned in the early centuries by at least two councils. (See the last CITH thread for references.) I don’t know to what extent the ban extended to the eastern rites; sorry if I implied that there were bans in the eastern rites.

Some news on Fr. Hennessy from today’s Georgia Bulletin:

“Father Thomas J. Hennessy has been assigned as full-time chaplain at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cancer Home, Atlanta, where he will reside, effective Sept. 8”

I was just wondering if the 8:00 Latin Mass at St. Patrick’s with Fr. Peek was still in effect on Sundays; a couple of friends of mine and I were thinking of visiting. (Their office is closed for the weekend so I thought I’d just check in here.)

As far as I know, Fr. Peek is still saying the Latin Novus Ordo at 8:00 on Sundays. I did notice in the photos of the anniversary celebration that were in the Georgia Bulletin that even the “Benedictine Arrangement” has been removed from the altar now.
