Refugees detained at US airports after Trump exec order

The USCCB put out a very strong statement opposing this measure. Please read it if you support this atrocity.

She also said that only people with four grandparents born in the US should vote.
That would disenfranchise a lot of Catholics.
Right. Ann Coulter is so extreme as to be unhinged to my mind. She gives me the chills. Having said that, I also think the USCCB are too far to the left on this issue. Not unlike some evangelical Baptist Church groups that walk in lock step with Trump on this (they exist). You have to make your own assessment of what is the responsible Christian thing to do on this issue. Follow your conscience. 😉

It would also disenfranchise Donald Trump since his mother was born Scotland.

Until today, until this moment, I was at least hopeful about the next four years. Trump was elected as our president in a fair and free election, and I thought perhaps some good things might happen. I wasn’t thinking about “resistance,” or anything like that.

Now I’m not. It’s over.

We, as a nation, have made a horrible, horrible mistake. And we’re going to pay for it.

This is a very sad day. My wife has to be afraid to visit her family. My children (who are U.S. citizens) have to be afraid to visit their grandparents, in case Mom won’t be allowed to return home with them.

I’m going to join my local Democratic club on Monday and give as many hours as I can to working as hard as I can to ensure that President Trump and his party are defeated in the next election.
Why do I get the feeling you would have done this regardless?

Dear God in heaven.
I contacted the two pastors of my Lutheran Church this morning to encourage them to speak out against Mr. Trump’s executive order from the pulpit tomorrow. I think Christians have a duty to opose this action of Mr. Trump’s which targets some of the most vulnerable people and seems needlessly cruel.

If anyone wants to actually know what this executive order does, why and for how long, take a couple of minutes to read this:

hotair.com/archives/2017/01/28/cbs-this-week-in-executive-orders/

“The EO sets out an annual limit of 50,000 refugees — not exactly a full-on block, although there are temporary blocks in place for refugees from Syria and six other countries in the region. **By the way, six of the seven nations restricted in this EO are either failed or near-failed states racked by civil war where radical Islamist terror networks hold significant ground. The other is Iran, which is the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism. **In 2011, only Iraq and Somalia could have been described as failed states and nests of Islamist terrorism, but now we have more — and that does seem to be the common thread.”

Fun tidbit: just two weeks ago President Obama banned refugees from communist Cuba. Where was the wailing, tears and cries of outrage then?

I am not at all surprised by this and neither should anyone else be. This is what those who voted for him heard and still voted. And some evoen now applaud. :frighten:

The title of the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism actually belongs to Saudi Arabia, the very country Trump was too cowardly to target in his executive order.

No, in substance it is nothing close to it. Muslims from nations not listed are unaffected. Muslims who are US citizens are free to come and go as they please.
None of the countries that the 9/11 hijackers or the San Bernadino shooter were from are on Trump’s list. So much for preventing terrorism.

This is not true. What Obama did was to end the practice of giving automatic residency to illegal Cuban immigrants just because they were Cuban and managed to reach our shores. This put Cubans on the same footing as everyone else with regard to refugee status.

Got it. Thanks very much for posting this. I can handle this.

What do you propose the country do to properly vet potential terrorists?

My position: I am undecided on how I feel about this, mostly because the prior administrations Democrat and Republican alike have done a poor job keeping terrorists sleeper cells out. I’m well aware that some of these are home grown terrorists. However, with that said, just because some are home grown does not mean we ought not address those that are outside. I am strongly in favor of allowing refugees into this country due to the terrible situation occurring with ISIS. However, we also need to be smart about who we allow into this country.
Well said.

Unfortunately I can’t. I’m not a lawyer, nor do I play an immigration official on television - but the problem with this EO is that (right or wrong) it’s being used against students with visas trying to return to class from other countries. Not hysteria - fact based on information I’m receiving from my son’s classmates and their parents.

I have no problem with the administration placing a hold on NEW refugees, not issuing new visas, etc.

I have a large problem with the administration lumping in students who have already been vetted, already been attending school here, who have done nothing wrong, who have no suspicions against them, suddenly having their education placed on indefinitely hold - and who may suddenly be separated from their immediate families.

These are not refugees or immigrants wanting to come to the US and being upset over having their application delayed. These are kids who went through all the proper channels and went out of the country to visit relatives, work, study, or do charity work and can’t return to class.

Perhaps it’s my own fault for refusing to listen to much about the order due to all the hysteria, but I never understood that it would apply to those already here / already approved.

But now I know and I find it outrageous to simply mess around with people’s lives under the pretext of security without any basis of suspicion at all and with no recourse offered but to wait and see and maybe we’ll get back to you in a few months.

Tragic. Trump is very much at odds with the bishops and the Pope on a score of issues.
But be careful. Criticism of Trump is not well received on this board.
You can criticize Trump, I’m fine with that, but it has to be a fair criticism.

God Bless

Thank you for reading
Josh

Trump’s order will also prevent Green Card holders from the banned countries from entering the country, some of whom have lived in the US as permanent residents for years, some of whom are married to US citizens. It will separate families and cause extreme hardship for a lot of people. Some will lose their jobs and possessions became they can’t return to the US.

Because I wouldn’t.

I’m a registered Democrat because where I live, in New York City, the Democratic primary is basically the same as the general election. If you don’t vote in the primary, you essentially don’t get a vote (Mike Bloomberg and Rudy Giuliani being the exceptions) for mayor, or for city council.

I didn’t vote for Hillary Clinton in her primary runs for the Senate, or the general election for the Senate, or in the primary (either time) for president, or in the general election for president.

I’ve never been a committed Democrat. But now I feel like I have to be.

I really was open-minded about Trump (at least after the election). But looking at his actions since he was sworn it, I’m not. I’m scared. And after today, I feel like he’s an actual threat to my family.
