How does/should a Catholic refute the Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, and other Protestant doctrines without running circles around the subjects and remaining faithful to the Doctrine of the Church at the same time?
I’m in the process of being Confirmed (hopefully it will be this Easter) and I find myself surrounded by Protestants and as much as I try to read, I still come short of answers at times…
Ask them if they belong to a church. If they say yes then ask them, why? The man made doctrine of Sola scriptura teaches that the bible is our only authority via private interpretation. What do you find at any church, regardless of denomination? --teachers! If the C.C. can’t have teachers…
In Luke 10:16, Jesus said, **“He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” **That verse is a verse of authority. It is a verse also of obedience for those who were sent. There are thousands of non-Catholic sects, each with at least one preacher and all of them are preaching something different vis-a-vis any one doctrine, from one another. So, given the fact that there can be only one truth, given any one doctrine, and with obedience to only one authority, which one of those thousands is the model of obedience and has the authority given to him or her by Jesus Christ? Which one of the thousands of them could lay claim to Luke 10:16? Remember, Jesus’ built His Church circa 33 AD. If they can’t trace their church all the way back to Pentecost, then Jesus didn’t build it.
“…and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” Those who reject the teaching of His One Apostolic Church, and their successors through the one Church which He founded, are rejecting God.
Remember to always remind them that, belonging to a church contradicts sola scriptura!
