Against the teachings of his Church for what sure appears to be political reasons.

It’s why I would never be a politician. Or perhaps more to the point, why I would never be a politician that had to discard my principles.

yeah, ain’t the good ol USA great! I get to vote and I’m a woman  go figure! I am proud to be a moderate/independent. ** I can think for myself. **Seems Ryan has a opinion, that is about it, but wow!..that made some “extreme” "rightys’ a bit nervous. Karma…it never fails. 😃

FWIW, yeah, Ryan is a good guy…loves his job, his family, is good at math. But ya know…when push comes to shove…he is a politician. I haven’t seen one in the last 37 yrs that was perfect, or didn’t change their minds on issues.🤷
You can think for yourself?

What about a properly formed conscience that is consistent with Catholic teaching?

This whole thing reminds me of when VP Dan Quayle was once asked on television what he would do if his daughter found she was pregnant but chose to terminate her pregnancy, and he said he would support his daughter. Sometimes a careless remark can change everything.
Great insight, comparison and memory meltzerboy.

I remember that. Brilliantly crafted ambush question. Theoretical. Full of emotion - and wrapped up in a litmus test for “What kind of a FATHER is Quayle … if THIS crisis came along?”

I don’t remember the exact wording of the question (which might make a difference). Quayle’s answer begs clarification too though (except now its too late for that).

How many ways can an answer like Quayle’s be understood or misunderstood?

“I would support my daughter …” (she wouldn’t HAVE to terminate her pregnancy. We have the money and the space to care for her and our grandchild).

“I would support my daughter …” (If she’d already terminated the child, of course we wouldn’t disown her - even if we disagreed and grieved about what had been done)

“I would support my daughter …” (Abortion is legal and there is not much we could do to stop it … but I’d support my daughter by trying to get her to make the right decision.)

“I would support my daughter …” (I’m prolife … but you pro-choice folks can vote for me now).

“I would support my daughter …” (I’m prolife … but if she’s going to do this thing she will have the very BEST … uh … health care possible!).

No matter which way one interpreted the parenthetical explanation to be - Quayle was either going to be a zealot whose politics was more important to him than his own daughter … or a phony who’d stand strong for life until it hit close to home.

It’s almost like the classic " … have you stopped beating your wife?" question with a little more subtlety.

Such questions should be anticipated by now and not dignified with an answer. Or else
be met with similar brilliance in an unexpected (carefully prepared) answer that MAKES the politician instead of breaks him. < Not easy to do.

As one who’s read many works of Ayn Rand myself, I would concur. But to be fair, he did state at his debate that he believes life does start at conception. I don’t think Ayn Rand disputes this fact; however she does state the fetus has no rights at all until actual birth.
That position regarding the fetus may be derived from Rand’s Jewish ancestry.

You’re right. He said that he would waffle if he were given a 2nd chance. Maybe he’s only trying to sucker gay adoption / support. Maybe, if he really was given a 2nd chance, he would only waffle on his suggestion that he would waffle if he had a 2nd chance. Whew! You know there are waffles within waffles. He had me going … I thought he was talking about real waffles, not maybe waffles.
If he does waffle, he better bring syrup…or at least strawberries and whip cream.

…hopefully, he’ll wait until he is visiting Belgium to waffle. Those are yummy!

This is the second time you’ve made the point that you are a moderate and can think for yourself. Are you suggesting that those of us who won’t support any anti-life politicain are unable to think for ourselves? Maybe I’m reading you wrong, but I am also quite able to think for myself.
no, you are reaching. Common sense applies here.

He said that there was a specific bill that he had voted on in the past related to gay adoption that he would vote otherwise today. That type of statement is not an offhand … Did I say that, I didn’t really mean that. What specific aspect of that specific bill is worthy of reversal, given that he gave it some thought over the past couple of years. Otherwise, this is not a “gotcha” moment. It is what it is.

Actually, common English applies here. Posting "I am proud to be a moderate/independent. I can think for myself" implies that those who are not moderate/independent can’t think for themselves. Otherwise, your comment that you can think for yourself wouldn’t make any sense…common or otherwise.

10gr8kids understands you very well, IMNSHO.

so you say… :shrug:take what you will from it.🤷

I don’t see that implication in what was said.

I remember a discussion, not so long ago, where all democrats were lumped together through demonizing partisanship speak, in an effort to deny such a thing as pro-life democrats existed, because of their party affiliation. The effort seemed to try and portray republican politicians as above the ‘fray’ on all issues. Some posters showed being offended at certain politicians being doubted because of timely political appearing ‘flip flops.’

What will be the consensus if Ryan changes his view again, in time for the next major elections?

What is sad, is that it appears republicans are looking how to ‘soften’ on issues to attract larger voting blocs. The irony lays in which issues they are willing to make concessions on. 😦
It doesn’t just “appear” that republicans are looking to distance themselves from women’s issues regarding abortion, rape, birth control, but there has been outspoken call from a variety of leaders literally begging their cohorts to drop all social issues, most particularly anything “woman related” (talk about abortion, rape, contraception) as well as immigration, anything to do with Hispanics, and gay rights. There is no secret that some Republican leadership is actively trying to move the party out of the entire realm of social issues and appeasing the religious right and back into a strictly financial conservative party. Sounds like Ryan is just joining Jindal, Gingrich and others in this push for electability.

Gay adoption makes it hard obey the Fifth Commandment

Honor your mother AND your father.

Gay “dads” - don’t forget that breast milk is scientifically proven to be in the child’s best interests.

This is out of pure curiosity, but why do you [the forum as a whole] consider gay adoption to be such a bad thing? Again, just curious.
Primarily, because most of us are Catholics.

**What about adoption?
**Adoption is a generous response to a child who is in need or abandoned. Mothers and fathers who adopt children witness to the truth that every child is a gift. However, keep in mind that adoption, guardianship, and foster care take their form from natural generation (a father and a mother conceiving, giving birth to, and raising a child) and should never contradict the conjugal and generative reality of marriage. In other words, fathers and mothers matter to adopted kids, too. Placing a child in the care of two men or two women may be well-intentioned, but ultimately deprives the child of that which best serves his or her interests – a mother and a father.
