They certainly do some good work, and I admire them for the good that they do.

Then there’s this “men can get pregnant” craziness.
This reminds of something Dr. Alveda King said about Planned Parenthood, when someone says they do good for women, in spite of the abortions they perform. Dr. King said (I’m paraphrasing), “Would you eat a brownie, if you were told the ingredients were sugar, eggs, butter, chocolate, and dog poop?”

Can men get a small business loan for women from the US government or women’s scholarship?

Well, that’s something I really struggle with right there. Trans men are not men biologically. Even if they get the surgery, they just aren’t. I’m not saying they are bad people. I’m not saying they don’t suffer. And I’m not saying they should be abused in any way.

But I think the conflating of sex and gender is toxic; and damaging.

If I have XY chromosomes, fully healthy and functioning penis and testes, and testosterone in almost all cases I am a male. A man. My biological role is that of the male. Yes there are intersex and androgen insensitive people but that is a different medical condition.

For those who say they are a man because ‘that is what their brain is telling them’ but they have an otherwise healthy female body, I’d tell them to love themselves, but accept the truth that perhaps they are an extremely masculine feeling woman. They may in fact, according to some studies, have a brain structure that more closely resembles a female. But their physiology is all male. Love the truth of what they are, and not the fiction of what they want to be. And for those of us not suffering from this condition we should accept them as they are; extremely masculine biological women. A mismatch between gender and biology, but still humans with the inherent human dignity granted by God.

Why am I being picky about this?

Because people are saying feminine people who are biological males are women. And that isn’t the case; and it is a case where a biological woman may feel threatened. Or be put at a disadvantage. Further, there are others whose cause of gender dysphoria is unknown, might be psychological; and just saying ‘HEY YOU’RE A MAN/WOMAN’ may harm, not help.

This situation sucks for the trans woman. No denying that. But we deal with that with the best therapy and medicine we can give them. What we don’t do is ignore biology and objective reality.

Just like my 13 year old daughter shouldn’t be sitting in the exit row of an airline when she might have to exert a ton of upper body strength in a crisis; I don’t want a 15 year old biological boy competing against her for a spot in her volleyball team in a couple of years. Nor do I want another family member who suffered sexual assault having to endure a biological man in her locker-room because we can’t face hard facts.

We’ve gone completely overboard in our quest for ‘equity for the marginalized’ and ignoring the other injustices we might create when we should be seeking ‘fair, compassionate treatment’ for them.

There has to be a third way. The problem comes not in wanting to be recognized as needing accomodation due to having a very different interior experience from other men, which certainly is legitimate because it is true. No, the problem comes from wanting to be treated as not any different at all from a woman and believing there is a right to be regarded in that way when that is not actually true. No, these are not just women who don’t have periods and cannot have children. There is a big difference and it does matter.

I cannot imagine the sensation of feeling like being in the wrong body. Not to cast any judgments, but it seems that one could only come to such a realization by a lot of life experiences to demonstrate the difference and give one a sense of alienation or something.

This is a big part of what concerns me about the trans movement. It seems to be reacting to a modern vision of masculine and feminime which is not shared in all cultures and all times. Could these people remain in their birth-given bodies and “be the change” in society’s increasingly narrow perception of “man” and “woman”? Surely there can Be a variety of masculine or feminine expressions & perhaps our culture would be healthier with a more rounded-out sense of how we express the kernel of our sexuality that transcends any particular cultural expression…?

Mebbe, but it’s hard to imagine a kid with “lots of life experience”

Once the gay crowd got their so called marriage okay, the trans crowd needed to create issues where none existed. Most people here in America are live and let live kind of folks and all this “trans” stuff is all a subterfuge to stay relevant.

This (secular) culture is progressing steadily down a one-way street to insanity. Non-sanity. Irrationality. Living in fantasy. “Virtual reality”. Conflating or interchanging one’s imagination/desire with reality/truth.
The culture has been on this path for a while, but it is accelerating, and the vehicle has no brakes.

What is missing is a cultural anchor of Truth, a foundation that is firm and enduring. We had such a foundation, but we got so smart that we decided that we knew more than our parents or anyone else. We simply dispensed with God, and felt free to be whatever we wanted.

People who have gender dysphoria are either:

People who have something going on at the genetic level that science has not yet fully uncovered

OR

They are people who have a mental illness

In either case, there are people who feel something is wrong with their bodies and they ask that other human beings call them by a certain name and think of them as another gender.

Can you think of any reason anyone, especially a Christian, should ridicule them for their birth defect or mental illness?

If your grandmother or your brother or your spouse develops dementia and considers themselves to be a bear or a princess, are you going to call them “Cuddles” or “Your Majesty” because it makes them happy and calm, or insist on treating them as an 65 year old adult named Pat regardless of how it makes them cry?

Should I know someone who suffers, who carries the great cross of gender dysphoria, I am going to do all I can to help them carry that cross and treat them with the same dignity that I would give to you or the Governor or the King of Sweden. If that means calling them “Bill” and buying them menstrual pads and throwing them a baby shower, I will do just that while at the same time doing all I can to see they have the best medical, spiritual and emotional team that exists.

It gets a little old hearing all of the cold, uncaring responses toward those who carry this cross. As I tell kids when I talk about bullying in Catholic schools, when you see someone carrying a cross, you can be one of those who mock and jeer or you can be Simon who helps carry that cross.

Amen! And the best way to help our brothers and sisters who feel alienated is to make them feel accepted, loved, respected.

Just to play the devil’s advocate, a woman who has to have a hysterectomy and salpingo-oophorectomy when she’s 10 or 12 would still be a woman, even if she might feel a great loss at having lost her fertility and all that goes with it. A little girl self-identifies as a woman long before she experiences any of that, and it is possible that a boy might feel more as girls do than feeling like other boys do.

Having said that, a boy with those feelings still has the body of a boy. His body is his body, his correct body, not the “wrong” body. It isn’t disfigured or diseased. It is also not his “possession.” We are both our body and our psyche and our soul–his body is an integral part of him. The boy’s body ought to be accepted, even though it is difficult, because his body, too, is himself.

The problem is that he is having a great deal of difficulty with the profoundly disquieting (for him) experience of being a male. He’s experiencing it, and no matter what he does it feels foreign.

Yes, I think that going from the experience “The feeling of being a male seems foreign to me and has never seemed any other way” to the conclusion “I must actually be female, in spite of my body” is a rash conclusion. Having said that, it is an experience that relatively few people have to go through. Of course it raises the question in the person going through it–what does it even mean to be a man or a woman, anyway? It is a question both of self and a question of one’s place in humankind. Anyone who feels a conflict between their psyche and their body is in a very unenviable position.

We don’t have a really good answer for how to cope with this kind of interior conflict. Putting on a female persona, to the point of changing one’s name, using hormones and plastic surgery to suppress one’s physical appearance, and asking others to change pronouns used to refer to us, however, is akin to renouncing a part of the self that isn’t wanted. It is pronouncing an integral part of the self to be inherently wrong and utterly renouncing it. Is it surprising that other people don’t feel comfortable with that, when those other people feel that is a very important part of yourself that you are renouncing?

It is not realistic, I think, to put on a persona and to ask everyone else to accept the persona as real and the renounced part of the self, the part of ourselves that we ourselves have difficulty accepting, as false. That this part of the self is profoundly upsetting is undeniable, yet it is a real part of the self and convincing others that it is not…well, I don’t think this is any more tenable than convincing people to honesly pretend you’re 39 when you’re 65 or forbidding anyone from acknowledging that no, you’re not a blond, you’re a brunette with barely a hair left that still grows in brown instead of gray. You can change your looks all you like, but people are not going to accept being told they are nasty people for not going along with the pretenses you have put on, even if those greatly help you to feel more at home with yourself.

These situations–a woman accepting she is now really an older woman on one hand and a man accepting that he is a man and not a woman–are on a different plane in terms of difficulty. I only mean there is a commonality in the difference between making cosmetic changes that help you accept yourself on one hand and expecting people to prop up a made-up persona as if it were your true self on the other. People will rebel at being told that they have to pretend that in changing your appearance you have actually changed the truth about yourself.

Sorry, I’m not trying to debate with you so much as to think about the matter with you–to tell you what thoughts I had after reading your thoughts. I don’t mean to take you on as if one of us has to be right or the other wrong.

Who’s ridiculing them? Not me. These types of things are difficult pastoral issues.

However, I’m talking about the ACLU tweet, which is absolutely worth ridiculing. It is a blatant denial of reality. A man who gets gets periods or gives birth is not a man, but a woman. This is objectively true.

Ministering to people is one thing, publically affirming and promoting a seriously disordered understanding of sex and gender is another.

By the way, I doubt the ACLU would ever call transgenderism a birth defect or mental illness.

All part of the devil’s plan to sow confusion. He particularly loves to sow confusion about His creation, especially His creation of the communion of persons that can only occur between one man and one woman in the nuptial relationship.
