Why? What about the history of Mormon politicians and their actions would justify you making that claim? Examples, please.

There’s nothing about Mormon politicians that serves as the basis for my claim (unless you look too closely at the first and most ambitious of Mormon politicians—Joseph Smith!).

The mere historical singularity of the fact that a Mormon—though a Jew or a Muslim (even a moderate one) would have been just as singular and just as relevant—is poised to become the first non-Christian candidate for POTUS with a decent chance of being elected is quite enough basis for initiating an inquiry into the outer limits of litmus politics. And those of “identity politics,” too, for that matter.

Being opposed on principle to Catholic voters making such an inquiry in the privacy of their own minds and hearts smacks of embracing what Plato used to call “the unexamined life.”

A big NO THANK YOU on that.

Also, you admit that there is no example you can come up with that gives you a reason to assume that a Mormon president would govern any different than a Democrat or Republican non-Mormon president.

I think your basis for calling for an inquiry into how far a litmus test will go - the possibility of an election of a Mormon for the first time as president - is unecessary. As I said earlier, the litmus test you should be questioning is the one liberal Democrat catholics apply to their candidate: i.e. “is he a Democrat instead of a Republican?”

Using Romney’s Mormonism to question whether we should vote for him is to avoid the more important issues, such as, what kind of justices would he nominate? What would his economic policy be? What would his foreign policy be? etc. I think if you analysed the issues you’d find that he is fairly moderate to conservative candidate, maybe a little boring. Not as conservative as I’d like, but he’d be a huge improvement on Obama, don’t you think?
