What we might be seeing in Romney possibly is a hint of truth and the struggle of not being able to serve two masters ; with many persons praying for a good leader for this nation , could it be that the Holy Spirit somehow convicts him that his real motive may not be serving the nation impartially , as much as serving another master - his faith and LDS !

That is o.k , since such is his conviction , for now !

But the rest of the electorae has to decide if they want to cater to such a plan !

Persons familiar with Mormon faith talk about how they even try to 'baptise ’ ancestors of Jewish persons !

There is a big diffrence in the Catholic practice of pleading for God’s mercy on all and thus exrecising our priesthood as opposed to using the ‘control’ mechanism of 'baptising ’ persons , as though dictating to God , what need to happen , before He can use his mercy !

Then again , in a system that caters to desire to become gods , is it inconceivable that such ways would be resorted to !

Too bad that Santorum does not see what is the greater threat !

Fact that Gingrich was a witness to how things happened , esp. in the Reagan Era , may be his greatest strenght - add to that his own growing wisdom and conviction of Godly ways , seemingly the passion to serve the nation - all of these seem like the right antidote to unforeseen chaos brought in by someone at the top , who carries idolatrous values that were not paid attention to !

Can we afford to repeat that mistake !

The only problem is that Newt Gingrich is not on the ballot in every state. For example, only Romney and Paul are on the ballot in Virginia. This is going the get messy at the end because if the only reason Romney gets the nomination is because Gingrich did not receive any points from Virginia, folks will not be happy!
Correct. and in many (most?) primaries don’t allow write in candidates.

There is something to be said about a candidate who cannot get his collective stuff together enough to ensure that he/she is on the ballot in critical states like Virginia.

Agee. The process here has been the same forever. Yes a pain, but obviously not impossible. I was very suprised that Santorum didn’t manage it when he has good friends in the party here who could have helped him.

I’m on the west coast and the debate wont air til 9p … But the net pretty much indicates that the debate was more like a cross between the Chris Matthews show and Smarter than a 5th grader and than a Presidential level clashing of swords.

A conservative I use to follow named Zo has a video about an enthusiastic base. He said like Obama, Dr. Paul is the only candidate whose been able to produce enthusiasm amongst his supporters so far this election.

Mitt will never see that.

Newt might.

Santorum no.

Democrats are switching parties for the primaries to vote for Paul.
See, even a Paul fan has to say Newt might get enthusiasm in his supporters.

And, might part of that be that he would be the logical second choice of the Ron Paul constituency? What, with Ron Paul saying Newt is a good candidate, but not a great one. And, Newt sees eye to eye with him on the Fed. Or at least closer than any mainstream candidate has. If you’re an enemy of the Fed, go with Paul. But, if Paul can’t get the nomination, your second choice should be Gingrich.

And, I do have to say this: enthusiasm in the base is only 1 factor. What if the Communist Party in the U.S. had LOTS of enthusiasm? There comes a point when your policies will simply too far outside the mainstream to win.

Unlike the Communist Party, Ron Paul’s views which are outside the mainstream might be correct (anti-military-industrial), but on the same note so is the Church’s view of contraception. Both might have innate truth, virtue, and rightness; but both are rejected by the majority of Americans. Such the joys of democracy.

I’ve got a close eye on Newt, if Romney get’s in I’m probably going to write in Dr. Paul. It’s not like it’s going to matter here in Oklahoma. I’m working my facebook friends as much as possible, I have the ladies at my bank excited about Dr. Paul. If Newt get’s in, I’m going to try and find faith in his sincerity.

What’s interesting is that Romney has failed to separate himself from the Republican establishment. I’m not sure he’s even tried, but if I were him I would.

Newt’s successfully painted himself as the outsider, even though he’s been connected to DC much longer than Romney has.

Newts saying all the things people want to hear, Mitt’s saying all the things McCain said last election.

I agree, and Dr. Paul has done the right thing by focusing on education. His views are not mainstream, the question is can they over time become mainstream. It will probably be a long time, but he will be forever respected as the one who started it all.

Just the amount of support he has gained over the last four years is amazing.

The *Washington Post *reports that more than 40 Catholic leaders and theologians have issued an open letter to Catholic candidates Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, warning them to stop perpetuating ugly racial stereotypes on the campaign trail. The signers of the letter, which was released last Friday, cited Gingrich’s repeated criticisms of President Barack Obama as a food stamp president. At a debate in South Carolina last wk, both Santorum and Gingrich continued to blast the Obama administration for allegedly encouraging the use of food stamps. The leaders and theologians reminded Mr. Gingrich and Mr. Santorum that Catholic bishops describe racism as an intrinsic evil and consistently defend vital government programs such as food stamps and unemployment benefits.

More then one race uses food stamps, I’m not sure why this is racist.

Hmm…I find racism in the wording of the article more so than what Gingrich/Santorum have said. Didn’t read the letter, so I don’t know if it’s worded the same way. But accusing Obama of promoting welfare, is not racist.

Well, ironically, I too (at least at present) am pretty confident I won’t be voting for Romney either if he gets it. So much so that I was looking through some of the third parties today. There are at least 3 or 4 conservative ones I’ll be considering.

Again, I live in Alabama… so its not gonna matter. I’d rather vote for someone I feel comfortable with and not have to settle and vote for a “lesser evil” in Romney.

And that’s my point to the Romney people I’m trying to make. Here’s you and me, two solid members of the conservative side of the coin… and we ain’t votin Romney if he’s on the ballot.

And then you’ve got Ishii’s sig that says “If you vote 3rd party you make Obama’s day”. It seems that Romney’s “inevitability” hinges on his crowd harassing all the conservatives who don’t want to vote for him.

Obviously I hope I get to vote for Gingrich. Or even Santorum or even Paul if they get it. But, the moment Romney becomes the nominee is actually the moment I become uncertain of who I’m voting for…

Alabama - Home of the Mises Institute

I think I’d rather be studying there than the University. 😃

Here is the actual letter and those who signed. Decide for yourself if those who signed represent a cross section of “Catholic leaders” or …?

Personally, I find it unchaitable at best to ascribe “race baiting” to these two. Indeed, it is now the left who is attempting to play the race card for political gain.

I find it offense they think only one race uses food stamps. When I was young my family used food stamps (we have money now), and we are white.

So are the people attacking them implying only blacks have food stamps, or Hispanics have food stamps? This article is racist.

Here is the part of the article that says it all:

In their open letter, the Catholic leaders — ***many of them associated with progressive and Democratic causes ***— say that raising “racist caricatures is irresponsible, immoral and unworthy of political leaders.”

(my bold italics).

What a news flash, cmatt - a bunch of pro-Obama Democrat catholics who seem to care more about their liberal/left politics than their faith have written a letter to help their favorite candidate.

Too bad they don’t seem to get it - that a catholic who is serious about his/her faith should oppose Obama will all of their strength. The man is the most anti-catholic president we’ve ever had.

Ishii

Can anyone site for me the authoritive Catholic teaching which states that being opposed to the food stamp program is an “intrinsic evil”?

Oh, I guess reforming welfare programs would be considered an “intrinsic evil” proportionate in gravity to supporting abortion on demand.
Therefore I could vote for Obama in good conscience? :whacky:

.
You rang?

If you were in a swing state that could decide the election - think Florida in 2000 - would you vote for Romney over Obama? Why or why not?
