Resurrection? Why?

Jesus didn’t say it that way. The Mosaic Law was not sufficient (especially the second law). Jesus said he came to fulfill the Law and introduce higher standard of holiness. And that he would empower us with the Holy Spirit in order to live the Law faithfully.

Therefore I gave them statutes that were not good, and ordinances through which they could not live. (Ezek 20:25)
*Have you read what comes before and after that? How do you not relate? *

**
The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers the day I took them by the hand to lead them forth from the land of Egypt; for they broke my covenant and I had to show myself their master, says the LORD. But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD. I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people. (Jer 31:31-33)
**

*I will write MY LAW within them and write it upon their hearts! It does NOT say, I will abolish the Law through the death of a man… does it? *
Jesus said it would do no good as a foreshadowing. People would still reject the call to repentance even after his own resurrection.
*And yet, you all say that it does… again, the above verse that you quoted, read what comes after it. Are you sure that you are not the ones who have the false statutes and judgments? *
**
*Ezekiel 18:20-28… “Are not my ways equal?” I do not think that most would consider believing something blindly or something ONLY revealed to certain of ones in the church is equal. … show me where in the prophets’ testimonies it speaks of a man being killed, dead for 3 days, and raised again and that he would be God. If it is not there than it is not true according to Amos 3:7. *
**
*Who am I supposed to believe… the Word of God or you all that the truth just has not been revealed to me? If it is the latter, than TRULY God’s ways really are unequal. *
We believe that Jesus rose and ascended to heaven. And that he has taken his throne at the right hand of God in the heavenly Zion (a greater fulfillment of Psalm 110)
*You did not get that idea from Psalm 110. Besides that negates the many places in Isaiah when it says there is none beside God… He is the only God and there was not one formed before or after… according to you all, there was and he is beside God. Very contradictive, no? *
We believe the same about Daniel 7:13-14. And that he will reign as king “forever,” and his throne shall never be “withdrawn”
True, Israel will reign forever. Jeremiah 33:25-26 confirms this as well. 🙂
And during the process of reuniting scattered tribes of Israel, he bestowed the blessing of Abraham to the nations- includeding the Gentiles in the new (international) kingdom of David.
*But most Gentiles are still stuck in the same delusions that the house of Israel was scolded for time and again. When are you going to wake up to the Truth? *

Maybe, but why are we on earth if after all we experience in our life, we die and there is nothing? Why then have we been created and lived?
*Lapell, He is a Creator! He established the Natural Laws and well, here we are. Everything that makes people not enjoy it is a product of our own doing and not of God’s. If we would pay attention and set things straight, then perhaps we would be content with what we have been given… LIFE! That is not something to regret having is it? If it is, then why are so many gung ho on doing it for all of eternity? that is even the bigger question to me… why would so many not be content having Life but desperate to have it for all of eternity? Dont you see that as more of a mystery too? *
But, you seem to have missed something. Lazarus was taken to the bosom of Abraham. And if the rich man asks that Lazarus be sent and give him water, then it means that Lazarus is ALIVE in the bosom of Abraham, not dead. And how would the rich man, who had DIED, experience suffering in “that furnace”? How would dead people experience suffering? People ALIVE experience suffering, not the dead!!!
🤷 *It is a parable. If you are going to take it literally, then you are saying we will all end up in the bosom of Abraham which is divided into sections where we can see each other. Weird. It is an allegory to teach the Truth. *

*I will write MY LAW within them and write it upon their hearts! It does NOT say, I will abolish the Law through the death of a man… does it? *Not “abolish”… but “accomplish”, my friend! The Church never abolished the Ten Commandments, for one thing!
Why would the Catholic Church speak against abortion of living children in their mother’s womb?

Why should it be weird? Abraham was known for his hospitality. What he did while on earth he is doing in the world to come.

Is. 52:13-53:12
13 Behold my servant shall understand, he shall be exalted, and extolled, and shall be exceeding high.
14 As many have been astonished at thee, so shall his visage be inglorious among men, and his form among the sons of men.
15 He shall sprinkle many nations, kings shall shut their mouth at him: for they to whom it was not told of him, have seen: and they that heard not, have beheld.
1 Who a hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?
2 And he shall grow up as a tender plant before him, and as a root out of a thirsty ground: there is no beauty in him, nor comeliness: and we have seen him, and there was no sightliness, that we should be desirous of him:
3 Despised, and the most abject of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with infirmity: and his look was as it were hidden and despised, whereupon we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he hath borne our infirmities and carried our sorrows: and we have thought him as it were a leper, and as one struck by God and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our iniquities, he was bruised for our sins: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his bruises we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray, every one hath turned aside into his own way: and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was offered because it was his own will, and he opened not his mouth: he shall be led as a sheep to the slaughter, and shall be dumb as a lamb before his shearer, and he shall not open his mouth.
8 He was taken away from distress, and from judgment: who shall declare his generation? because he is cut off out of the land of the living: for the wickedness of my people have I struck him.
9 And he shall give the ungodly for his burial, and the rich for his death: because he hath done no iniquity, neither was there deceit in his mouth.
10 And the Lord was pleased to bruise him in infirmity: if he shall lay down his life for sin, he shall see a longlived seed, and the will of the Lord shall be prosperous in his hand.
11 Because his soul hath laboured, he shall see and be filled: by his knowledge shall this my just servant justify many, and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore will I distribute to him very many, and he shall divide the spoils of the strong, because he hath delivered his soul unto death, and was reputed with the wicked: and he hath borne the sins of many, and hath prayed for the transgressors.
See, I do not believe that there is any evidence to say that we will live eternally.
The biggest evidence for me is the covenant with Abraham, we know that this world shall pass, but the covenant is an ever-lasting covenant one that shall not pass.
God can not be a man. It would even be a contradiction to what is said in the foundation that Christianity claims.
This is a stumbling block particularly for Jews. And I agree it sounds like a contradiction, but the fact is that even though He took on our humanity, hence, the reason He could atone for sin, we still do not fully understand what this means.

Hello simplynoone! I hope you’ve had a great day today. 🙂
*How kind of you. :o Yesterday was good and today is as well. I hope the same can be said for you. Thank you. *
True love isn’t conditional. Paul speaks to this when he speaks about charity, which is the pure love of Christ.
*Most of what you had said before the above, I can agree with. The last two sentences though contradict really. Paul was quite clear that if there is no resurrection, he would enjoy what makes his own self happy. That is conditional service to God. *
The pure love of Christ is without conditions and we should be filled with this love. It is the greatest of all attributes that we can have. This is what Christianity teaches. Whether a person strives for these principles is another thing altogether. I am far from having charity, or the pure love of Christ, but I do recognize that I am not worthy of any blessing that God bestowes upon me, but, nonetheless, the Father has blessed me and my family, which is truly a wonder to me to think that the God of the Universe would give a hoot about my insignificant existence. I’m convinced that God wants to bless His children and to give them everything that He can. So, the question isn’t about what we want, but what God wants.
One can not love someone that they do not know. For instance, I know for a fact that you do not love me and this is because you do not know me. True, you are showing me respect and that I greatly appreciate and offer back to you… but respect is not love.
If I rely on a spiritual manifestation from God to know truth, I am being reasonable.
*But what objective truth do you have to see that the Book of Mormon should be believed? Anything? I believe the Tanakh, but that is because there is objective truth for believing it. I do not believe though some of the accounts in the Tanakh as being literal accounts because the objective Truth does not support the accounts, but the objective truth DOES support the Truth and the wisdom that are contained in the allegories. Make sense? *
To reject God speaking to my spirit would be foolish.
True, but we have to have a guideline to discern if it is actually the Truth or something someone else has suggested to us that is appealing, thus why we might choose to think it is God “speaking” to us. That is what the Law of God is for. There is no Sacrificial Law that would support, let alone parallel what it is being claimed happened with Jesus. The Natural Laws do not support physical resurrections of the dead in the way that it is said Jesus was resurrected.
I have not abandoned reason. My knowledge comes from pondering and reasoning things out in my mind, and then supplicating myself before my Maker and asking Him to validate my beliefs and understandings. God has confirmed to me that the Book of Mormon is true, therefore I know that when it speaks about a real and physical resurrection, then the resurrection is real.
*But if the book of Mormon is based on the Hebrew Scriptures, then it is clear in Psa 78:5 that testimony has been established with the Jewish. The Law for guidance is in Israel. Based on what God set up, the Book of Mormon, if it is Truth, will not contradict the Tanakh and if it confirming that Jesus was a blood sacrifice for mankind, was dead for 3 days, and resurrected physically, then it is contradicting the Word of God. *
I respect your beliefs here. Coming from what I know to be true, I don’t believe that only God can exist in the infinite. I know that God is happy and there is no state of existence greater than God’s state of existence. Therefore, if I were to share in God’s state of existence, I cannot imagine it being any sort of punishment.
Then you do not know the Word of God as well as you might think you do. God is infinite in knowledge and Life and therefore He can not be a man. He even says He is not a man more than once. And we can not achieve the level of God… it is impossible because it would cancel us out of existence.
In closing my post, I want to point out that I think this thread alone is evidence enough that trying to prove the resurrection relying simply on our own interpretations of the scriptures is, as I said, a futile venture. I can only offer you what I’ve learned and what I understand from my experiences and my studying of the scriptures. I think if you explore the LDS perspective, then believing in the resurrection is the only conclusion that would be reasonable. I know God answers prayers and I trust Him to lead me to truth more than I trust my own wisdom or my own reasoning. That doesn’t mean that I don’t think or use my mind, but it does mean that in questions of eternal significance, I want to get His stamp of approval before I commit to it. In my experience, God has answered my prayers through His Spirit.
While you are correct that all you have done is to prove that you are blindly believing something (you are not alone in that venture as is evidenced thus far), I do sincerely appreciate your willingness to share in your honesty with me what you have. You are very kind. Thank you. 🙂

I said FULFILLED which means “to make complete”. It means to include and conclude. It means to perfect and transform. The moral Law (10 commandments, etc.) are retained and refined. The sacrificial Law is what expires because it is fulfilled by the sacrifice of Jesus.

God did not originally desire animal sacrifice. Instead, He wanted praise, humility, and obedience (Psalm 50:8-14; 51:18-19). Tell me why the animal sacrifice requirements would continue in the New Covenant. Why the need for daily reminder of ritually slaughtering the “gods” that they once worshiped. The New Covenant says Israel’s heart is free from the slavery to idolotry.

So yes, I did read before and after. I especially enjoyed this part

As I live, says the Lord GOD, with a mighty hand and outstretched arm, with poured-out wrath, ]I swear I will be king over you! With a mighty hand and outstretched arm, with poured-out wrath, I will bring you out from the nations and gather you from the countries over which you are scattered; then I will lead you to the desert of the peoples, where I will enter into judgment with you face to face. Just as I entered into judgment with your fathers in the desert of the land of Egypt, so will I enter into judgment with you, says the Lord GOD. (Ezek 20:33-36)

I will respond to the rest when I have more time.

(Lapell) — On this I don’t have a problem agreeing with you, do you know that?*

If it is, then why are so many gung ho on doing it for all of eternity? that is even the bigger question to me… why would so many not be content having Life but desperate to have it for all of eternity?

(Lapell) —This is what I don’t understand: it’s not a matter of not being content with the gift of LIFE, nor of being “desperate” to have life for all eternity. If it would be a life as full of miseries and even fuller of it, why would I want it? If it were the case, I suppose I would not be so willing, even though it’s often kind of bearable!
Maybe you are feeling the same…
But if LIFE is such a great gift to you, why would you rather be content with just a SMALL amount of it? If you make the best with the amount of life (and love for God and for others) to the extent that it is enough to make you happy, that you would say “Dayenou” like during the Passover Seder, what if God had more in store for you than all the things He did for you about which you say: “If Adonai had done just this, dayenou!” But He ended up having done a lot of things anyway, and it made you jubilant! What if Adonai would do the same with the amount of LIFE that you and I have received: “If I had only this amount of LIFE and nothing more from Adonai, dayenou!!” But what if Adonai wishes to go even further? Would you not be willing to accept that further share?
That is my stand about eternal life. We are told that it’s what God has in store for all those faithful to Him, the Jews and the Gentiles. Is that being desperate?
Maybe what I said earlier came just from the fact that I learned of such a promise from such an early age, and I would not understand why it would be withdrawn all of a sudde3n after so many centuries…
And I was born in a Catholic family, not a Jewish one. Maybe this explains… If you have received from God the gift of being content observing God’s Words in this life, this is great indeed in itself, I acknowledge it! I am sure God will give you even greater reasons to be happy if you keep on to the end. God bless you greatly with His Shalom, you and your whole family, wherever you are! And also… Shabbat Shalom!!!

🤷 It is a parable.

*I do not disagree that God is totally free to do as He wills, but if He did not establish His Laws and then work within them, how would we be able to trust Him? *
You then believe that He does not/cannot do miracles (in the Old Testament or the New) which suspend the natural laws He established for the sake of calling man’s attention back to Him. You do not trust a God who held back the waters for Moses and the children of Israel to pass through, Who caused His servant Isaiah to feed miraculously the widow of Zarephath and her son, and Who raised that son from the dead, Who miraculously caused the conflagration that consumed Isaiah’s offering - and the priests of Baal along with. Nope, not much of a God to trust Who does such things. 🤷
*If God works however He so chooses, then there is NO WAY that you can say that others are wrong in their views and your views are the right ones. How would you REALLY know for sure? You could just be trying to convince yourself and to succeed in convincing yourself does not necessarily mean that is Truth. *
Yes, there is a way to know ones views are correct as opposed to another’s. First, one must accept that there is truth that can be known and that it is discoverable; second, it is through the gift of Faith which gives a surety to what God has revealed in His Self-Revelation of Himself through His Son, a Self-Revelation of His choosing for our salvation. If one denies the Son, then one denies that Truth which He has chosen to reveal; further, that Self-Revelation has been entrusted to His Church to propagate and protect and can thus be relied upon in forming one’s understanding of what God has revealed.
We all have power over death in the sense that it is spoken of in the Tanakh. Ezekiel 18:20-28 is clear on that. Again, are not God’s ways equal?
Certainly we can bring about our own death - and that of others - by our sins; but we do not have the power to give back life where it has been taken away. Only God can do that, and He has done that precisely in His Son, how in glory.
*What you are wanting is power over physical death and that will never happen… *
Nooooo; neither I nor any other Christian is wanting “power over physical death”; that power is God’s alone. Physical death is something, however, that was not meant to be ours, and He has restored us to the hope of eternal life with Him through His Son become Incarnate and raised from the dead.
it was never a punishment; rather it is part of the natural life cycle that God established. Physical death is good!! It allows for renewal and growth on this earth which is part of God’s creation.
OTC, “God did not make death, and he does not delight in the death of the living. . . It was through the devil’s envy that death entered the world” Wisdom 1:13; cf. also Gen. 2: 15-17.
It is selfish to say that we think we are so great that we should live forever and suffer the creator to having to work with stale humans.
🙂 “Stale humans” is an interesting way to describe the summit of God’s creation, made in His image. It is not because of any greatness on our part (without His grace we have none), but of His own Greatness that He desires to have man come to know Him so intimately as to live with Him forever having been transformed into the likeness of the Son.
Most are so unhappy in this life anyway as is evident by their pining away for the day they think they will be whisked away to some better place. The Creator of this Life is the Creator of all and so, if you think He did a lousy job here, what makes you think you will be content somewhere else… He would be the Creator of that place too, no? 😊
Who said anything about Him doing a “lousy job here”?! You are reading a lot of your own misconceptions of Christianity (“pining away”) into what is being said to you on this thread. This life is a gift, one in which to rejoice in good times and in bad. What God has created is good; what He has in store for us in His Kingdom is that good come to fulfillment, thus the best because there we will know Him as He Is, not a through a glass darkly.
*God’s Son is on this earth now. He has been, is, and will be on this earth so long as it exists. It is the promise made (Jeremiah 33:25-26). And God’s son is declared as Israel (Hosea 11:1 and Exodus 4:22,23). Why are you trying to rewrite the Word of God? *
God has written some additions to His Word with the Incarnation of THE Word, the Son for Whom and in Whom all His younger sons were created. But, apparently, some suffer from jealousy of the Elder Son and cannot bring themselves to recognize Him; yet He loves them and is ever calling them to Himself.

Very good! This is speaking of Israel, the Son of God and the Servant in whom Isaiah says God will be glorified through.
The biggest evidence for me is the covenant with Abraham, we know that this world shall pass, but the covenant is an ever-lasting

Not “abolish”… but “accomplish”, my friend! The Church never abolished the Ten Commandments, for one thing!
Why would the Catholic Church speak against abortion of living children in their mother’s womb?
*Abortion is not part of the 10 commandments but keeping the Sabbath day is. You speak of the former, but the Church does not observe the latter.

Now, let me explain about abortion considering I know this view is held to under “thou shalt not kill.” I do not believe that abortion is something to be used as birth control… abstinence or some form of birth control is the more wise choice to make. BUT, it is only logical that when it comes between the baby’s life and the mother’s life, the mothers life is the more important since she is the one with the awareness of life. Generally, the pregnancy is naturally aborted when something is not right, but there are cases that this does not occur. (I don’t consider it a miracle, because there are many such cases where both mother and child have died). I am of the mind that the mother, having knowledge of life, is the more important of the two to save. Could I have ever aborted… honestly no. I have gone through two natural abortions and that was VERY difficult for me. But I would not DARE to encourage a mother whose life was in danger to not abort the pregnancy if it did not do so on its own. In fact, if it were a family member or a close friend, I would encourage her to DO so… especially if she already has children in the stage of awareness, for they are dependent upon her presence.

I think the Church (not just the catholic, so as not to single out here) is selfish for not taking this into consideration and guilting women who should not be guilted.*
Why should it be weird? Abraham was known for his hospitality. What he did while on earth he is doing in the world to come.
I am sorry Lapell, but you will further have to elaborate here. What I am asking to be elaborated is what it has to do with the post you are replying to. I am sure it does, but please tell me of your line of thinking with this. Thank you. 🙂

You do not fully understand it because it does not have any support in the Word of God.
Hi
what about John 1.14 &18

14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
18 No one has seen God at any time; **the only begotten God **who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.

Jesus > is the Word that became flesh > is the only begotten God

*Hi 🙂 Thank you. My problem with this though, is that you are using the NT to prove the NT while it is claimed that there is proof in the foundation… that being the Tanakh. Also, others have said that it just hasn’t been revealed to me, but God said that His secrets are revealed in the testimonies of the prophets (Amos 3:7) and not through personal revelations. The Law of God is the foundation of the Tanakh (both the Natural Law and the Torah) and thus, it can be objectively seen as Truth to me. Paul threw out the Law in the NT and thus, the NT can not be supported by its own testimony. I am not AT all opposed to most of Jesus’ teachings, just all the stuff that can not be found in the Tanakh.

I am cautious because of Deuteronomy 30… the blessing and the curse. It is clear there was going to be a choice coming up to allow us to choose Truth or the Lie. Since Jer 17:5 speaks of the curse that to me, seems like so many are buying into, well… do you see where I am coming from here? I want the Truth and not the lie… not for any rewards, but because the Truth matters to me for its own sake. *:o

The covenant is everlasting and not the people.
But how can a covenant exist with something that doesn’t exist. If this is all there is as you say, the covenant cannot be everlasting. I hope you see the fallacy in that.

By the way, it sounds like a contradiction because it is a contradiction. Hosea 11:9 If He became a man than He lied. It is that simple, no?
That’s a strawman argument. You are using your preconceived notions of God to explain it. Remember, God’s ways are so above your ways than the heavens are from the earth. God did not *become *man, He remained God while taking on our humanity.

How kind of you. :o Yesterday was good and today is as well. I hope the same can be said for you. Thank you.
You are welcome. I’m glad you’ve been doing well. I have been doing good also. 🙂

I just wanted to let you know that I’ve read your response and I wanted to say thank you for taking the time to read and to respond to my post. Other than that, I have nothing else to add.

Be well, simplynoone!

Kind Regards,
Finrock

Why then the numerous calls for repentance and a change of heart? There is happiness in doing something good, I know, but that ending with death so abruptly, what kind of happiness is that? Really, you seem to be very content with crumbs, as though from despair… from having kinda given up on life itself! At least it may seem like it, no?
Are you kidding me? My life began when I saw the Truth! To LIVE in awareness of the presence of God IS my reward. Why do you call this, my life, crumbs? I do not see it that way. I am not in despair for this gift of awareness… to be able to speak the Truth is not something that is unfulfilling or worthy of being called despair. I have hardly given up. I am NOW, in awareness, able to see how the beliefs that christianity holds to is truly giving up. YOu all consider this life nothing more than a waiting room… what a wasting of time, minds, and the precious Life that we have been given.
