It just seems like it’s unthinkable to people to give up their outdoor fires. But it seems to me a lot like smoking, where a few people harm the air that everyone breathes.

Don’t you dare tell me to give up smoking, too. An hour with a book and my pipe is one of life’s greatest pleasures.

I didn’t know that starting an unpopular topic on CAF would be deserving of the death penalty… In fact I thought that the death penalty is against our religion now…😅

I’m not Catholic, so I’m still free to execute you 🙃

As long as no one else is forced to breathe your smoky air! 😃

I’ve never forced anybody to breathe it. They’re always free to walk away.

Let’s give up combustion altogether! No coal, wood, gasoline, or natural gas.

Welcome to the Stone Age!

I will give you my wood burning pizza oven and pizza paddle when you prise them out of my cold dead hands.

Difference is, we need some of that stuff to get around, heat our homes. But campfires are just for fun! 😅

Just because of this article and posting. I’m going to have a fire in my firepit this evening. My kids will enjoy the smores…
My goal will be to have a fire for each posting… lol.

Hey! One of em is my girlfriend 😠

I live in the country, and I know that the two biggest sources of wood smoke (besides actual forest fires) are people burning wood for heat, and controlled burns to reduce fire fuel loads. Compared to these, campfires are utterly insignificant. Now it would be very nice if everybody who used wood for heating was using a modern fireplace/stove - they burn so clean that you don’t even see any smoke, only heat ripple, while an old unit will pour out smoke (and get less heat from the same amount of wood). It’s just like how one old car puts out as much pollution as dozens of new cars. So if you want to reduce wood smoke, come up with some combination of carrot and stick that gets people to replace their old wood burners with modern ones.

Okay - - I can certainly agree that wildfires are just a responsibility problem - - but what about the health effects?
We are all going to die. If the numbers reflected a serious reduction in life or lifespan, I would agree.

But it doesn’t.

Now, I’m not going to start advocating that we start building a lot of new homes with wood burning fireplaces or antique wood stoves.

But we hardly need to overreact by outlawing the burning of wood, which is natural - esp if done in a responsible manner

Oh, Dear! It’s just not going to be the same, sitting in the wilderness telling stories and singing songs around an LED campfire!

This reminds me of an exercise I recently saw in a Libertarian forum. You perform the following Google search: “Is/are _____________ racist?”

Racism is real. I’d even argue it’s even been on the rise lately. But some of the search results get beyond-the-pale absurd.

(I was lucky. Apparently there’s nothing racist about skeet shooting).

Anyway, I was going to proposed a spin-off for CAFers: “Is/are _______________ a sin?”

Whatever your results are for campfires, don’t reveal them to the party responsible for that burning bush in the Old Testament. Something tells me He won’t take too kindly to your accusations . . .
