“one Catholic bishop says the lofty sentiments left him cold because of the president’s attitude toward another, unmentioned group of victims.”

His Excellency is, of course, entitled to his own opinion on the subject, both as a citizen and a clergyman, but his are the remarks of one bishop. I did not see similar remarks made by the rest of our Catholic hierarchy.

President Obama was there to comfort the country and the victims about the shootings in Tucson. He was not there to defend or condemn abortion; he was not there to defend or condemn the war in Afghanistan nor world hunger nor human rights abuses in China or elsewhere, nor was Obama there to talk about the terrible flooding and subsequent deaths in Australia, etc., etc…

I wholly respect the bishop’s right to speak out, but I think that he would have been more on point and his remarks more meaningful if the President had been in Tucson to speak about abortion instead about the shooting tragedy.

Those remarks can be amended to include likening Obama to the gruesome abortionists in Philly who’s just been arrested. Obama lobbied hard for abortionists to be able to murder delivered babies who breathe (failed abortions). That’s exactly what the Philly doc was doing.



Bishops don’t convene synods to comment on every latest news story. I applaud this bishop–a successor of the Apostles–for boldy stating the truth. He has the gift of discernment of spirits, clearly.

The President wasn’t speaking as “voice for life” in Tucson. Didn’t you listen to the speech? He was offering comfort to the citizens of that city, to the survivors of those wounded and especially to the survivors of those killed. He made a point of speaking of everyone of those killed individually, and his compassion for them stood out.

And, what other Catholic bishops joined Bishop Tobin in condemning the President about his talk in Tucson?
