Robin Williams Attacks Catholic Priests and Points Out Lack of Consequences

When the media criticize the Catholic church, The church does not do its self any favours, When it keeps on its payrole those who did cover up abuse, I have been on the radio in England and criticized the media about its reporting of abuse, Because it goes on about Stranger Danger when most of the abuse is in the home, And i have sent thusands of emails to parliament in the UK about helping victims properly, Yours michael
 
I disagree with the tone of the OP with “we have no one to blame but ourselves”. Blame ourselves for what? An aged comedian on a late-night chat show portraying all Catholic priests as pedophiles? I think we should blame the lack of fresh, original material on Robin Williams himself. I personally don’t take the blame for Williams’ desperate attempt to generate controversy around himself to promote what looks like a dull movie.

I was a journalist, and I still work in related fields, as a Catholic Religious Brother. The media enjoys a certain immunity going after Major figures and organizations. I can certainly agree that it looks like the Catholic Church is getting the majority of bad press while school districts and smaller denominations recieve minimal coverage.

There is some balance in matters of size in order. More than half of the media reported abuse does not involve the church.

Please slow down before responding to that claim. Becasue the other cases of abuse are in groups of much smaller size and geographic coverage are, it only appears they are not getting the same coverage. A case concerning the Minnesota Lutheran Synod affects far fewer people than alomost any single Catholic diocese in the USA. It gets reported on the front page of the local area. And it is reported on in a number of other medias, but with smaller attention.

The Boy Scouts of America made national Headlines for a good many years some decades ago. They had wide spread abuse and cover up. They adopted proceedures to check this. Today, the abuse still happens, but very localized.

Well over half of the abuse, however, is inside of families. This hits the news, but ussualy local — if it is discovered at all.

Mormons come under media scruiteny a lot also. Far less than RC Catholics - but again it has to do with the influence the two different churches have in this land. RC is very influential just on population. RC is involved in far more community benefitial projects than any other denomination, again party due to size.

Although we recieve “some” bashing on pro-life/pro-choice issues, we come out pretty goo in the long run when we are in the news trying to protect our hospitals from evil pro-choice law regulating how our hospital are run and employee benefits are measured.

We are at the forefront of keeping immoral labor regulating laws from ever being enacted (eg abortion insurance). The media recognizes this. some media bashes us for it, some media defends us for it. Both types of media has shown the American Public that we are the champions of family rights and family issues. Many people of other denominatiuons, though still finacialy supporting thier particular faith communities, have donated to the Catholic church becasue what ever kind of media reporting there is one us, these folks know we will get the job done and that we are big enough to get it done - standing up against governmetn powers that need to be stood up to.
 
Well, I wrote the media executives at NBC, I hope they respond to all of our efforts in a good way. If they espouse “political correctness”…which is poorly demonstrated, then maybe things will improve. But I don’t think we should just lay down as Catholics and accept the status quo. I for one am also writing the movie company that has made Robin William’s movie and tell them I am boycotting it and why. Perhaps that will affect William’s future affilitation with this independent company.
 
good job. remember a real letter via snail mail is much more effective than a million emails. i’m so lazy though, perhaps a template.doc so i can just print, stamp, and send. 39cents isn’t too bad…

Big Media does read the letters. Its hard to back track once something is done, but writing campains have succeeded in canceling some TV shows and convincing movie houses not to show certain movies. More over, the entertainment industry has refused certain scripts based on public reaction to earlier incidents. As we can see, this doesn’t put a stop to everything, but there are many production groups that realize they have crossed the line - or have seen the result of other producers that have.
 
Tips on writing to Media corporations:
Write a draft letter and then let it sit some hours or a couple days. Meantime, try and separate fact from hear-say. The re-write the letter. Keep it to the point. Quote or describe the objectionable act or statements found in the media (movie, TV program, etc.).
It is best not to compare a media blunder against the Church with how we might want to percieved media has treated other groups. Keep the issue focused on the actual error. Robin Williams is in error accusing all Catholic Priests. I (or we, or many of us) do not find the topic of abuse humorous.
Try not to assume the motivation of the Media company, the local source or the person committing the error. Our assumtions, if proven wrong, negates the purpose of a letter of complaint.
Example: I (or many people) found Robin Williams very offensive.
To say media would not permit the same thing said about other minorites or certain religious groups is side tracking, and is not entirly correct either. Media frequently permits poor image of other religious groups and of just about any sector of society. There are some very poor media representation of Amish, Friends (Quakers), Native Americans, Blacks, Latinos, Jews, and the list goes on.
We can support one another rather than suggesting the other groups are not picked on in media.

hollyweird being the left hand of satan has always attacked the RCC and Truth itself! Williams just picks up his paycheck and smirks…When FDR ,at Yalta ,placed into the tender hands of his buddy…Uncle Joe Stalin…some 750 innocent Christains…of whom good ole Joe was to murder some 42 million…FDR no longer was great,or average but below par as a human being and president…so when a man posing as a priest committs crimes…against children etc he is no longer a priest but a demon…I have tried to get snap and church of the faithful etc to place some quotes…“priest” around the word but to no avail…Holllyweird has always attacked fathers of all sorts…from those wearing collars to guys like me…

As others have said, nothing new here. If you really want to be offended by an actor/commedian, try D. Leary. There is no finer example of how ignorance goes hand-in-hand with a blinding, anti-Catholic bigotry.

I just happened to go to the movies last night. The previews for a different movie (can’t remember the name of it) that Robin Williams is in were disgusting. He plays a Protestant Minister and he is so sexually suggestive and gross in just the previews alone. He really has a thing against organized religion. What a goof!
 
People especially Catholics should stop supporting these silly people. We should support the poor all over the world especially those heartbreakers, the little helpless children of Africa.

On Thursday’s Today, NBC’s Meredith Vieira interviewed Robin Williams, introducing him jokingly that he “has always made people look to the heavens and say what was he thinking? So it’s only appropriate that in his latest film, License To Wed, he plays a man of the cloth. And his character, Reverend Frank is more than a little unorthodox.” He’s playing an Episcopalian minister, but all his trouble lately has been by making harsh jokes about Catholic priests and pedophilia.

Robin Williams is such a hipocrit. He can make holier than thou jokes against the Catholic Church yet he has no morals himself. He’s the one who did drugs with John Beluchi the night he died of a drug overdose. What a superior human being. Ignorant I may say.
 
It’s just sad to see that Robin Williams’ is still so desperate to generate interest in his dull, new movie that he had to have a go at Catholic priests again.
