Robin Williams Attacks Catholic Priests and Points Out Lack of Consequences

As a Protestant you obviously do not agree with, and therefore do not have a full understanding of, what the Catholic priesthood represents to a faithful Catholic.

A Catholic priest is In Persona Christi Capitis (in the Person of Christ the Head). He is not Christ, but stands in for Christ, as a visable earthly representative of Christ. A priest is still human and a sinner, but his office is sacred and holy. Within his office he is ordained to provide the scaraments to the church, acts that even the angels themselves cannot provide.

If you disrespect a Catholic priest, no matter what he might be accused of doing as a human sinner, you are outwardly also disrespecting his holy office and therefore disrespecting Christ. This is why so few Catholics have much tolerance for the mocking of priests. Mock a priest and you mock Christ.

Please be aware that being called “anti-Catholic” or having “other heinous labels attached to (you) for repeating such jokes” is going to happen when you dis the priesthood. And you should be thankful that being “labled” (your term) is all that happends. Make fun of Mohammad in front of a Muslim and you may find yourself dead. Make fun of a Catholic priest in front of a faithful Catholic and you may be labled in the heat of the moment, but ultimately you will be forgiven and shown mercy. But, be very aware that what you have said will be strongly and righteously challenged and denounced for the anti-Catholic bigotry it is. A priest’s office is not akin to that of a televangelist and therefore is not meat for idle jokes that any Catholic is going to sit back and quietly tolerate. Being meek and mild doesn’t mean we have to be anyone’s doormat.

You are correct when you say that what Williams said is not new. The anti-Catholic bigotry of the Know-Nothings of mid 19th century is back with a vengence and is being fostered by the celebrities like Williams with the full blessing and cooperation of the secular media. Non-catholic Christians who try to brush it off as nothing new and therefore no big deal.

When a priest commits a crime he brings into disrepute the office he holds, NOBODY ELSE DOES THAT ONLY HIM. It is the same when a cardinal covers up he brings shame to that office no one else

You have taken what I posted out of context. Your moment of uppercase shouting indicates that emotions instead of logic or courtesy are governing your response and that you undoubtedly did not even read my entire post, or if you did, you did not comprehend it.

Nowhere in my post do I justify the acts of wayward priests or cardinals who commit criminal acts or who are negligent in the duties of managing the earthly church. I simply ask for non-Catholics, which you are, to understand why Catholics will not and should not be expected to tolerate jokes made against the priesthood. Because you are non-Catholic I don’t expect you to understand that when I use the term “office of the priesthood” I am not referring any type of earthly governance within the visable organization of the church but the holy and sacred office of Christ which is not of this earth but manifests itself in the sacred duties of the priesthood. It has nothing to do with pushing paper in corner office as a manager of the church.

Individuals that commit heinous acts is not representative of the priesthood. One such is an “anti-priest” and should be defrocked for the sin and crime. He should be tried and punished in civil court and serve a just sentence.

pedophilia and homosexual acts are NOT what the priesthood is about. It is deviancy at its lowest and damnable form.

There are “doctors” that abort the unborn and there are others who see it as destroying human life.

Because of the abortion doctor is the entire medical profession corrupted?

Robin Williams was a co=star in a homosexual movie/comedy. “La Cage au Foix” (Bird Cage). He has a long -embraced empathy and even approval of that deviancy.

we are truly offended and we will not let it slide. a hired Protestant pastor and a Catholic priest ordained by the continuous line of hands descending directly back to the Apostles and Jesus himself are a little different…

Robin Williams did not parody on a wayward priest; what he did was to imply this behavior is part of the general behavior of priests. In that regard, Robin Williams revealed himself as an anti-Catholic religious bigot.

This kind of bigot cannot reason that exceptions occur in every vocation and deviants infiltrate…even acting profession.

Disrespecting a man who molests little children is NOT the same as disrespecting Christ. Christ would never hurt children. When a priest is abusing, he is NO LONGER a representative of Christ. He cannot be.
 
I really do not believe Chimaugua meant “respect” to be that inclusive.

He is sound in his assessments of the degree of offense pedophiles commit. If a priest commits that kind of assault he is not a priest he becomes an anti-priest. This is so egregious that there can be no tolerance whatsoever.

I think Chimaugua is being misunderstood out of context.

Many times so-called “Catholics” take license on putting down the Church. They use their “Catholism” as a kind of pass; somthing like “Do not criticize my brother; only I am allowed to do that; it’s in the family.”

But Robin Williams is not a Catholic…he is Jewish. This makes me wonder why would he take such a role as attacking the Church. It’s bad PR, to say the least.

You might complain to “The Catholic League,” headed by Donahue. Google for the site.

Actually; I am quite familiar with what you stated about the office of a Priest, in the Catholic profession of faith; but nothing you say can justify “respect” for a “holy office” that abuses little children. And besides; I did not say this was not a big deal. I specifically addressed the general response of Catholics here on this board of giving the appearance of defending the perpretrators of sexual abuse to kids by denigrating the character and intentions of those who don’t know any better than to make “priest jokes” about it all.

I am sure it makes you feel good to “set me straight” on how holy such priests are; or, atleast how holy their “office” is, but I wasn’t trying to go there anyways. I was adressing specific types of responses I am reading here; and your post to me basically re-enforces what I said.

Also; I made a point to implicate BOTH Catholics and Protestants in my comments, therefore you are way off base as to my knowledge level and my intentions.

The biggest problem with issues like this is true accountability by the wicked people who do such things to kids, and by the friends of such wicked people. As fellow church members of a sexual predator, we can either enable them; (by comment or action), or do the right thing. That will be your choice - not mine.
 
This thread is horribly off course and I don’t think the point was to attack/defend the priesthood (I could be wrong).

But in my opinion, a devout Catholic should be made aware of such anti-Catholic remarks by celebrities and should make his entertainment choices accordingly. Does this mean we should only see movies that star Catholics and are made by Catholics? No, of course not. But Robin Williams and Jay Leno (don’t forget his little Chucky Cheese joke a few weeks ago) are both horribly anti-Catholic. I therefore will not watch the Tonight Show nor will I see ANY movies with Robin Williams.

You simply cannot call yourself a devout Catholic and sit by while someone blatantly attacks ALL priests. A joke about a priest who has been proven guilty of something is one thing, a joke (read as “attack”) about ALL priests is disgusting and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

On June 21st, Leno made the following tasteless “joke.”

“In Austin, Texas, a 61-year-old priest has been arrested after he left rehab. This priest leaves rehab, gets drunk and drives his car into a restaurant. So much for the Vatican’s Ten Commandments of safe driving. Imagine that, a priest driving drunk into a restaurant. Thank God it was not a Chuck E. Cheese. Oh my God.”
 
Could it be that guys like Jay Leno and Robin Williams, in their sardonic humor, are trying to get Catholics to quit the True Church?
