Your post is a dichotomy; You reject Rome has spoken from history, then you make the claim the Pope “thinks” that ecumenism is a good thing? Because Rome has spoken here, you ask the question "shouldn’t that be enough? What is your point?
“tons of Catholics”? “very unecumenical”?
Your not confusing a judgement on an individuals spirit of ecumenism from debated topics
to actual Catholic ecumenical efforts, that are being put forth in societies?
Catholic answers is one proof of the “tons of Catholics” who are excercising one ecumenical effort here today.
I believe a true ecumenical effort can be put forth, when both sides of an issue respects, learns and understands the others position of a subject. When one side tries to tell the other side how his/her faith is believed and practiced when it is never the case. The ecumenical effort does not become “unecumenical”, what results from this example many times here is one’s negative disposition to another’s faith. What is needed here from this example is not “ecumenism” but correction or evangelization, so that the person making the false assumptions of another’s faith, should be corrected, before “ecumenism” can resume.
Ecumenism deals with Truth between two sides that share something in common, with different views to reach an understanding peacefully.
Debate’s reveal opposing view’s and misunderstandings, that need more clarification between two parties, the result from such debates prove’s successful so that an ecumenical effort can be put forth between the two parties.
Flare up’s in debates are caused by one who does not practice another’s faith, yet tries to tell and inform the opposition how is faith is believed and how it is practiced. This type of disposition almost always fails the Catholic ecumenical effort before it can begin.
For example; I have seen time and time again Orthodox TELL Catholics what they believe, how they believe, and how they are wrong for believing their Catholic faith. It never fails some Catholics accept the Orthodox position because it pretends to support these false accusations with historical facts, councils, documents etc… when most times it is an opinion of the facts and not the facts themselves.
It is here that Catholics should be aware of the wolf in sheep’s clothing. It is not necessary to question another’s faith in this forum, or to reject their faith, when one does not practice the faith one rejects.
I have visited many non-catholic sites. This is the only site that possesses the most ecumenical peaceful efforts, because it allows the freedom for both sides to express their faiths.
What is debatable and not ecumenical is that history records, St.Augustine did repeat what other saints and councils have said prior to St.Augustine; “Rome has spoken” or “Peter has spoken” being applied to the Pope after the Pope has spoken.
Peace be with you
