Agreed. However, with Romney one never knows: he may even become a Democrat if he loses the Presidential election or, in line with dissonance theory, he may become more conservative. If he wins, all bets are off concerning both his politics and policies.
Really? Is that why Romney chose conservative Catholic Paul Ryan as vice president? Because he might secretly want to govern as a liberal if he wins? You are not making sense, meltzerboy.

Seekerz when will the Left get over that canard? Conservatives are FAR more charitable than those on the Left who feel they have discharged duty to their fellow man by voting that other people pay more taxes.

What Republican has said “survival of the fittest” or “you’re on your own.” Those are DEMOCRAT talking points and unsupported claims made in an effort to demean those who want to protect life before birth.

Who is running the pregnancy care centers (not abortion mills) who is volunteering in shelters and soup kitchens and taking in foster children? The Left?

I believe both sides care about the poor and those struggling to make it in our country. The difference is in the approach not the intention. We believe our approach is not only more charitable but also more effective. The Leftist big government approach has failed and if anything has institutionalized poverty.

Here here,well said!👍
We need a different approach but first we need compassion for all human beings. If human life is devalued unless someone decides it is of value, where to begin?

Yep. And, of course, he chose to be a Republican when he ran for Governor of Massachusetts because that is the easier way to get elected there. 😛

Do you have any evidence to support your implication that volunteering and charity are preserves of the right?

As for the left, I’m not sure why you think I should answer for them - I paddle my own canoe - it named The Independence.
Seekerz your arguments lose credibility when you set up strawmen and knock them down. I didn’t say volunteering and charity are “preserves” of the Right but if you look at any study, survey or just go down to your local soup kitchen or pregnancy center and see if it’s more likely full of Christian conservatives than secular Leftists.

People of God believe in feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and helping to protect life. They tend to believe in direct charity, volunteering and local efforts. I suggest that the Left is more a proponent of large government solutions. As I said, I think most are sincere in wanting to help but there are two completely different approaches.

There is nothing in secularism that inspires charity. So it doesn’t surprise me that those on the Left do not honor the participation of people of faith but think government has a better idea.

Some years ago, I’d volunteer at the Union Rescue Mission here in Little Rock, and for a longer time, I assisted my wife and others at the Alternatives to Abortion clinic, and not once, not once did we ever take a poll to see if we were conservatives or liberals. No crowing about who was giving more help to those men or to those women. Our focus was giving aid, not looking for brownie points based on our politics. 😦

How about the individual secularists themselves? Do you honestly believe that secularists or even atheists are devoid of altruistic feels towards their fellow human beings?

Ya… and what a joke obama is.
Being successful? Hmm…I’m pretty sure that’s what you call a person who runs for president and wins the first time round, hands down - complete with fully disclosed tax returns. 😉

You got that backwards. And i’ll bet carter is glad obama got elected… becuz he is no longer the worst president in history.

Economy was alot better with both Bush’s than it was under either carter or obama.
Yes, good compared to Carter. Compared to Bush, superb.

I concede that secularists and atheists may be altruistic. Unfortunately, they believe that government is the best provider of altruism, versus charities or individual donors. I simply don’t trust government to be efficient, nor do I necessarily like whom government selects as winners or losers of federal largesse (usually constituents). I trust Catholic Charities and similar organizations to use my donations efficiently and for the benefit of worthy recipients.

:clapping:

Bolded my emphasis.
I think it’s funny that people make such a big deal about this comment. He is 100% correct, that he would get a lot of votes from the hispanic community, if he were Mexican. Racial politics are a reality. All he was doing was acknowledging that fact. 🤷

Besides, if he were Mexican, he could claim that white people who don’t vote for him are racists…but, he would have to be a Democrat to play that game

It depends Rich on which human beings you refer to. I don’t think they have very altruistic feelings toward unborn human beings. I also don’t think they have altruistic feelings toward people with whom they have political disgreements.

Further as Tampa Dave said, secularists and atheists tend to look to a large government solution to what they perceive as social issues.

If your god is humanity, the standards are pretty low.

OTOH I can’t presume to judge their hearts, only their actions.

Romney chose Paul Ryan as his VP running mate because he wanted to attract more conservative, as well as Catholic, voters, given that conservatives were not convinced about his own politics. If he wins the election, he may govern as a conservative since he is beholden to conservative interest groups, or he may govern more as a moderate, liberal, progressive, neo-con, pragmatist, businessman, who knows? We simply cannot be sure what Romney’s political ideology will be in office or which policies he may or may not push for. IMO he has no real political core.

Some would say he chose Paul Ryan because… right after Ryan was picked, the rally that Romney Ryan had where people were turned away was near the Miami Ohio University where Ryan went to college. Hence, Ohio is a swing state and the 5 counties in that part of Ohio are basically swing counties that are important for the election. That’s what Cincinnati Nationally Syndicated Radio Host Bill Cunningham says.

That’s a big question. Right after the 2008 election, there was an article in one of the newsmagazines (maybe Time) about how Obama would govern. It pointed out that virtually all of the presidents who were seen as successful moved toward the middle after they were elected. The article, which was very pro-Obama, was speculating on how Obama would do that. Unfortunately, he didn’t move in that direction at all. Hence his “my way or the highway” showdowns with Congress.

I agree in the sense that, for some, it’s a choice between the devil you know and the devil you don’t know.
Romney is going to be an excellent President. He as been hugely successful in everything he has ever done.
