You can’t honestly believe your life won’t change a bit regardless of who is president.

If either of you really thought that, you wouldn’t spend nearly as much time trying to convince us of something in any random topic on here.

That’s what the kids in high school who wanted to sound “cool” and “above the fray” would say, and no one believed them then either.

I love Angels said, “I won’t vote for him because I don’t want it on the conscience or my soul.”

Show me where it is a sin to vote for Obama? Not that I like either one of them, I really can’t see it rising to a level of a sin,

Hi I see you are new and welcome to CAF. You can search the fora for this subject which has been dealt with repeatedly. I believe there is a recent thread quoting Archbishop Chaput that details how voting for a pro abortion candidate is in opposition to a non-negotiable Catholic teaching.

Since this thread is about the Romney video, where do you stand on that subject?

Lisa

Unfortunately you either didn’t hear the entire speech or didn’t notice where Obama changed directions. He said “If you had a business, you didn’t build that.” Was he referring to roads and bridges? No.
I did read some of the speech. I think he was referring to roads and bridges.
Obama:
There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that.
We both agree that it is ludicrous that he would be saying people do not build their own businesses. But just prior to that he mentions roads and bridges, and says “that” not “it”. So the obvious responsible interpretation is that he meant the necessary infrastructure of a modern society was not built by present-day entrepreneurs, and government plays an important role in providing and organizing infrastructure.
Further please tell me how roads and bridges mean the difference between someone with personal initiative and someone who doesn’t make the effort? We all have access to the same public infrastructure and indeed it’s easier to build a business in the USA with our paved roads than in Afghanistan with it’s dusty trails. But not everyone succeeds in this country despite its many blessings and opportunities.
Infrastructure doesn’t make any difference as to who win or loses-- but without public infrastructure, everyone loses I’m afraid.
Further not everyone is dealt a good hand in the brains, health, and energy department. I get that. But why does Obama seem to always try to demean individual success rather than see this as the opportunity to bring everyone up? How many jobs and how much wealth are created by a Bill Gates or a Steve Jobs (great name huh?)? To give credit to roads and bridges for their success is not only petty, it’s demoralizing. We should applaud success and try to inspire everyone to take the opportunities given to them. Instead Obama focuses on blaming others, excusing failures as society’s fault, and not giving people the opportunity for earned success.
I just don’t understand the appeal of his argument
Or you simply misinterpret the argument.

Sometimes people argue too forcefully for an important ideal they feel is on the wane, especially in politics, even more so in an election year. Reagan’s rhetoric appealed to conservative ideals, scared the dickens out of the left, but once in office he governed closer to the middle. The world didn’t end.

Obama could have been a more activist president the first 2 years, but he really disappointed the far left as he tried to govern moderately (and a bit too cautiously IMHO). There was no revolution, and that’s a good thing.

Obama believes in entrepreneurship, initiative and a market economy, just that some imbalances exist, and the role of government is under attack by relatively new libertarian/randian influences from the far right. Fringe extremism from both sides produces the sharp rhetoric and ultimately the distrust in the mainstream of both sides.

Hi Lisa,

I think he is an out of touch elitist. I think he is selfish and only thinks about the riich. I think ALL people have a right to good health care, a safe place to live, and a full belly when they go to bed. I believe that the government has an oblgation to engineer a fair tax system, that with the help of the private sector these things can be done. Better to redistribute wealth than for governments to build monuments to the arts and atheletes with tax dollars that could be used to ecomplish more humane goals.

Uh Rich, where have you been for the last hundred years? This is like those who start talking about the Crusades when someone points out Islamist extremism. Can we move on to oh say the 21st Century? That’s what Obama is dealing with right now, not Andrew Carnegie

Lisa
You said, “not on tearing down those who have succeeded by over taxing, over regulating and demonizing them.” The men I mentioned ALL succeeded on their own, but I nevertheless consider them as industrialists who needed regulation, and even some demonization. They are part of modern America, they’re not 16th century merchantilists.

Surely you were not referring solely to the 21st Century as we’ve had only two presidents in this century.

You are sorely misinformed about Romney.I dare say he has done more to help the underprivledged than Obsma has even thought of doing.Do your homework before you blindly pull the lever for Obama. Redistribution of wealth, aka socialism is not endorsed by the Catholic Church.

Nobody’s mind gets changed on these forums, everyone comes with their minds made up already.

I simply post my opinion and you post yours. We’re not going to change each others minds and I can’t imagine getting invested enough in it to try.

Hanging around on forums is fun, mindless entertainment. You can’t take it seriously.

Hi Jeane,
Misinformed as I may be, I always thought it was my vote, not the Catholic Church. And as for your thought on redistribution of wealth, our tax code has been doing that for years. It is just the programs supported that change not the intent. In recent years, however, the redistribution has gone to the wealthy.

Yes, indeed. I’ve made this point at least half a dozen times since I’ve started posting.

Quite right. Can you imagine EstesBob turning Democratic or me voting Republican?

Not mindless, but fun and not serious.

Your faith should difine your politics, not the other way around. The wealthy already pay the majority of the taxes in this country.Wheras, those on the bottom, not only pay no federal taxes,a lot actually receive an earned income tax credit. You don’t call that redistribution?

You know Romney well enough to call him an elitist? Let’s get real here. And as far as the “rights” you enumerated, where are these rights written and bestowed?

All true, but that has nothing to do with the notion “my life won’t be affected one way or another regardless of who wins.” Of course it will, and it has for every president ever. Now you may not care who wins, but that is a separate argument.

Besides, many of the arguments are for people to read who simply lurk and want info without ever posting. That is why CA is such a vital resource. For every one of us who posts, there are are hundreds who simply read silently.

My conscience, my heart, and my head define my vote, The EIC is well intentioned, but, widely abused. I am a CPA, I do tax returns for mostly wealthy taxpayers and I can guarentee you they have saved a lot on the Bush tax cuts. Look back to our tax history, can you remember rates of 70% on unearned income?

Selfish Romney:

Mitt Romney Saved Kidnapped Girl
For those of you who are questioning Romney’s character, this is a true story as reported on Newsmax.com:
Mitt Romney was faced with a crisis in July 1996. The 14-year-old daughter of Robert Gay, a partner in Romney’s new venture capital firm, Bain Capital, had disappeared. As it turned out, she had attended a rave party in New York City and had become high on ecstasy. Three days later, her distraught father had no idea where she was.
Romney took immediate action. He closed down the entire firm and asked all 30 partners and employees to fly to New York to try to find Gay’s daughter.
Romney set up a command center in a conference room at the LaGuardia Marriott just outside Manhattan. He hired a private detective firm to assist with the search and established a toll-free number for tips, coordinating the effort with the New York City Police Department, but he still wasn’t satisfied. He raced through his Rolodex and called everyone Bain did business with in New York. He asked them to help his company find their friend’s missing daughter.
The company’s accounting firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and its law firm, put up posters on street poles with a photo of the missing teenager. Cashiers at Duane Reade Pharmacies, which was owned by Bain Capital, put fliers in the bag of each shopper.
Romney and others from the Bain Capital posse trudged through every part of New York, even scouring Central Park, and talked with everyone they could - prostitutes, drug addicts - anyone who may have seen her. They also made rounds at the local nightclubs at 3 a.m., hoping someone somewhere could identify her.
The same day the Romney team came to New York, the hunt made the evening news. Television cameras showed photos of the girl and video of investment banker types prowling through Central Park.
The next day, a teenage boy she was with phoned in. He asked if there was a reward. But the boy got nervous and quickly hung up. Luckily, the police traced the call to a home in Montville Township, N.J.
Gay’s daughter, when they found her in the basement of that home, was shivering through detox after a massive dose of ecstasy. Doctors later told Gay that he was indeed fortunate - his daughter probably would not have lasted another day.
“It was the most amazing thing, and I’ll never forget this to the day I die,” Gay says, adding of Romney’s intervention, “I’m not sure we would have gotten her back without him.”
It is often during a crisis that we gain insight into a person’s real character. Romney’s action demonstrated leadership, loyalty, and selflessness - attributes that Americans just might like to see in a president of the United States.

How is the EIC abused?
