I think people who receive government aid should pay taxes on it, just like unemployment benefits are taxed.

I didn’t post the quote to somehow suggest FDR was a supply-sider, but to highlight that not everyone who considers work a human right, and worthy to the human condition is Thurston Howell III.

I agree. Not because it would raise that much revenue but it would link the benefit to a related responsibility that I think every citizen in this country has, and that is to participate in the common benefits we all receive. These benefits such as a common defense and more importantly protection of our sacred rights need to be treasured or it will be too easy to let them be frittered away like being nibbled to death by a duck.

Honestly this is one of the reasons I vastly prefer a consumption tax over taxing income by whatever source. The latter tends to discourage work and savings, in effect punishing those who are adding to society’s financial stability. Further it’s a way to get all those flying under the radar to pay something. While many of those not paying income tax are either retired or very low income, there is a HUGE underground economy that is never tapped because one can live ‘off the grid’ so to speak.

This is one of the issues with respect to long term unemployment. Many of these folks work under the table for cash until the 99 weeks runs out. Illegal aliens are another big category of non tax payers. We have a LOT of farms in this area and trust me those guys are getting mean green, not paychecks. They pay no taxes and quite honestly this also allows them to be paid lower wages, not get benefits or worker’s comp.

But all these people buy things and putting a tax on consumption is a way of getting a lot more people with skin in the game. Believe me if you don’t pay for something you don’t value it.

BTW I realize this is a regressive tax but there are ways to make it less regressive which are far less complicated than the current Code.

I am helping someone to recover from Mormonism. If Romney is elected, he will be the first non-Christian president.

  • Mormons teach that black skin is a punishment, the “mark of Cain”. Black people were forbidden their priesthood and not allowed in their temples until 1978. That meant that they couldn’t fulfil many of the Mormon “ordinances” and therefore were shut out of the highest of the “three heavens” of the Mormon faith.
This man’s principles are against everything the Catholic Church believes. I cannot understand how a Catholic can stand as his vice-president but Romney clearly chose him to lure Catholics to vote for them.

I would suggest voting for Obama just to make sure Romney doesn’t get in, as it is very unlikely that he would have enough seats to enact the legislation you fear, it would likely not even be put to a vote.

Please don’t be fooled, if Romney gets in, there are dark days ahead for the Church.

Actually that wasn’t my statement I just went back to get the statement that started the whole “who relates to you” and the poster’s preference was “someone with a background…” reporting the mother’s use of food stamps and fights with insurance companies as evidence that Obama can relate to poor people. Several countered with the reality that he had a relatively privileged background with a million dollar education—Occidental, Harvard Law and Columbia are probably not the places where one rubs elbows with the poor. At any rate I don’t think we can assume one way or the other that his background or Romney’s mean they can or can’t relate to the average person. But I think we need to be honest and not portray Obama as Oliver Twist or Romney as Richie Rich.

BTW Obama’s community organizing was focused on union activities and unionizing workers rather than what one generally considers work with ‘the poor.’ He was hired because a union was unable to get anyone who could work with the black workers in Chicago. He certainly has a longstanding relationship and support of union activities.

Whether one can relate to either candidate probably has more to do with our own background. I relate easily to Mitt Romney because he’s a rich businessman. I have worked with and for rich businessmen for 30+ years. I can speak their language. I understand their decision process. OTOH a union activist/community organizer is to me a completely foreign concept. When people say Obama is more likeable I am quite honestly confused because to me Mitt Romney is far more appealing in a personal sense.

Just a lot to do with where we are coming from.
