Bush 43 was smart enough to do better than Kerry at university. OTOH he was a terrible speaker and too many people interpreted this lack as a lack of intelligence.

Lisa
I actually thought Bush was a good speaker. He memorized most of his speeches and he spoke from the heart. He spoke his ideas.

Obama, not so good. He comes off as reading for the first time what’s on the teleprompter. That’s why he makes mistakes like “CORPESMEN” He knows how to pronounce that word properly, he was just not prepared to read that word because he hadn’t read the speech beforehand. Obama appears to speak someone else’s ideas - the person who wrote the teleprompter.

Look we did not DESERVE this empty suit with his Leftist, anti-life views, his corrupt administration and his weak kneed response to world crises. Obama is a DISASTER for this country and we did not DESERVE this.

What happened? A lot of people so hated Bush that the entire Republican brand was tainted. Like me, people would have voted for Mickey Mouse over any candidate with an R by his name in 08. Obama fooled a lot of people. He didn’t fool me but I admit he’s even worse than I thought he’d be. We have a celebrity culture. Look at the TV with all those stupid reality shows, vapid females with their bosoms on parade. So a celebrity politician appealed to that crowd. We have a lot of leftover white guilt. So a black president sounded so appealing. Assuage our guilt, get a good speaker and a celebrity all at once.

No we didn’t DESERVE what we got and I sure hope enough people have learned so as they say “We Don’t Get Fooled Again.”

Lisa
Don’t be shy…speak you mind on why people should vote for a man whom we can’t even stick to speaking about on a thread named for him… Oops, my mistake, you were talking about Obama and reality shows and white guilt and Mickey Mouse…When DO we get to the part about Romney? :D:D

So who wrote those speeches that Bush “memorized”? I didn’t even know people did that. It would make more sense for them to walk around with a hidden transmitter that cued them on what to say, except of course that could mean their facial expressions might not match what they happened to be saying at the moment…and that would be kind of weird and robotic. Like the kind of ‘smile’ which never quite reaches the eyes…

Oh please seekerz, you’ve been on CAF long enough to know that threads tend to wander. One person makes a point and someone responds even if the post wasn’t entirely on the topic. Heck we had two lengthy posts about Brazilian economics and politics. I didn’t notice you take issue with that poster.

I’ve never seen you so adamant about sticking to the thread topic before. Perhaps it hurts to hear the negative comments about Obama? I got a million of 'em!:D:D

Oblige us then, don’t let me stop you…Nothing mobilizes Obama’s base like the raindrops bouncing off his perfectly tailored jacket. Thing is, you were talking about everything in the world but Romney, so I just had to ask. 😃

Absolutely agree about Obama and when President Bush gave a speech, he did a good job. He’s a quick study and knows the material as opposed to following the bouncing ball on a "prompter. OTOH sometimes when speaking extemporaneously he would tend to mangle words and this created great howls of derision from the Left…remember “strategery” and “nucular”

But indeed I am SHOCKED, SHOCKED that when Obama embarrasses himself with pronunciations such as CORPSE-man the Left apparently believes this just indicates his subtlety and nuance. The other Obamic-speak that makes me crazy is
POCK-EE-ston. I work for a Pakistani and he said this is absolutely improper. It is pronounced packistan like pack your bag not like pockmark. But who is a native Pakistani to claim the Perfect One ever makes a mistake 🤷

See my previous posts about Romney. The contrast between the empty chair and empty suit and a man with actual accomplishments 😃 is quite remarkable! I’d think you’d be weary of my praise of Romney by now but hey if you want more…I got a mllion of 'em:D

So far what has been most impressive is the “empty thread” salute: as in a thread where the object of your praise is more absent than present. How cool is that!

Romney is such a man of accomplishment it goes without saying! I mean here YOU are promoting him…how cool is that?

Now we’re into pronunciation lessons…hilarious. I see her Majesty’s former subjects insist that it’s absolutely improper to mutilate the Queen’s English, so his own diction must of course be impeccable…You seem to know much of things Pakistani - have you perchance visited and partaken in any lofty discourse there?

Why not promote him? Romney has the Democrat base fired-up and straining at the reins. Early voting can’t come fast enough…😉

This sounds like right wing tripe to me. I have listened to him. I don’t listen to the right or the left political garbage channels (like FOX or Huffington). I don’t even have television. My opinion that Romney is unable to control his own tongue to keep from embarrassing himself comes from hearing what he says, and rolling my eyes. He is gaffe prone. That is unarguable, in my opinion.
so you have went from romney has offered no specifics on how he is going to address the problems of the country to romneys specifics are right-wing tripe. just what in the rather extensive documentation of his proposed policies did you find to be tried, right wing or otherwise
So that is one of my reservations. Do we want another GW Bush who embarrasses us everywhere he goes, and every time he speaks? Bush was stupid and uninformed. The stupid part was genetic and not his fault. But it disqualified him as an effective president. The uninformed part was his own laziness. He had all of the advantages, including a free ride to ivy league schools. I met a few like him when I was in school. They are dangerous people because of their sense of entitlement and their laziness. I don’t know if Romney is in this class. Clearly he feels entitled. But I don’t think he is lazy at all.
Romney has succeeded in every thing he has attempted to do. So i would agree review the lazy would not be a good description. However; bush stupid and uninformed is about as specious as sam romney has offered no specifics.

I
am still trying to figure Romney out. He is obviously not as stupid as Bush, but is he smart enough to be president. We can’t suffer through another mentally incapable president. Look at the mess that the last one created. It is a minimum qualification that a president be really brilliant mentally, like Reagan, like Clinton, like Obama.
There is absolutely nothing and Romney’s life that would indicate he won’t not be a good president. In fact if one looks at his performance at the olympics in Bain capital i suspect he will be a great president.
That is not enough though, as Carter and Obama have demonstrated. But I will not vote for a candidate who is stupid. That would be like pointing a gun at my own foot and pulling the trigger.
that is only if one goes by the flawed assumption the carter & obama were "smart’. i think those on the left way too much emphasis ON "smart’ and way too little emphasis on life experiences-how else can you explain electing a man for president who had absolutely no experience as an executive-even to the extent of running a small business and who ,if were elected to a second term, would make the presidency the longest time he has ever held a single job in his life.

I stand corrected. He is 3-0.

I didn’t see the “several trade agreements” mentioned in the article you provided. Also, you fail to leave out that the examples you cited in the article was initiated during the Bush Administration and “held up in Congress,” when the Democrats were in control. It finally passed, after the 2010 election brought a change to Congress.

nytimes.com/2011/10/13/business/trade-bills-near-final-chapter.html?pagewanted=all&_moc.semityn.www

So…I’m guessing you are for this Republican initiated, Democrat-opposed, Republican-passed trade agreements that Obama signed? 😛
The article that I linked to describes trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia and Panama. That counts as “several.”

I agree that those trade agreements were first sought by George Bush and opposed by the Democrats in Congress. However, under Obama, the Republicans opposed the bills and Obama pushed for their approval. Those facts were clearly stated in the article. I’d amend your description to “Initiated by Bush and opposed by Democrats, then backed by Obama and opposed by Republicans.” Lots of Republican-initiated legislation or legislative proposals were backed by Obama and opposed by Republicans to deny him any “wins.” These trade bills were just one example.

But you knew that already. 😉

What did “experience” get us in the previous presidency? Like his first term performance proved, “experience” is overrated and any intelligent person with the humility to listen to advisers PLUS the skill to judiciously weigh their advice, in addition to a good basic knowledge of world affairs, can be a good president. Leadership skills are what it’s all about.

Democrats Dispirited About Voting in 2012

Republicans’ enthusiasm for voting matches 2004 and exceeds 2008

by Lydia Saad
PRINCETON, NJ – In thinking about the 2012 presidential election, 45% of Democrats and independents who lean Democratic say they are more enthusiastic about voting than usual, while nearly as many, 44%, are less enthusiastic. This is in sharp contrast to 2008 and, to a lesser extent, 2004, when the great majority of Democrats expressed heightened enthusiasm about voting.

Democrats’ muted response to voting in 2012 also contrasts with Republicans’ eagerness. Nearly 6 in 10 Republicans, 58%, describe themselves as more enthusiastic about voting. That is nearly identical to Republicans’ average level of enthusiasm in 2004 (59%) and higher than it was at most points in 2008.

Obama has leadership skills? Where is your evidence of that?

To be fair, Romney’s accomplishments are a matter of substantial debate.

As head of Bain Capital, he was less a job creator than a vulture capitalist: borrow money to acquire a money-making company, load up the company with that debt, charge the acquired company millions of dollars of management fees, shut down U.S. plants, fire U.S. workers, and move those operations overseas. Some companies survived and did well, others went bankrupt. Bain made gobs of money either way. Not a model for job growth and economic prosperity for the U.S. as a whole. Mitt made hundreds of millions of dollars. His record as a job creator and builder of businesses is pretty weak, however, and unlikely to translate to success as President.

As governor of Massachusetts, he had a mixed record. Like Obama, he inherited an economic mess. He promised more jobs, lower debt, and smaller government. Instead, Massachusetts under Romney was 47th out of 50 states in job creation, taxes and fees increased by $750 million per year, and long-term debt increased more than $2.6 billion. Only a huge outflow of Massachusetts workers to faster growing states kept the unemployment rate from climbing higher. He wasn’t a disaster a governor, but he proved that managing an economy out of a recession is a difficult task.

Would he have done substantially better than Obama in managing our way out of the worst recession since the Great Depression? His record as governor indicates that the answer is “no.” Will he do better than Obama in the coming four years? I doubt very much that he’ll get the chance to show that his brand of “hope and change” will prove anything more than empty promises made on the campaign trail.

Governor Romney was making a pretty simple point that is not all that new.

When I lived in Illinois, school bond issues were voted on by all residents of the district and in areas with a large percentage of renters they always passed. In areas where most of the voters owned their homes, the record was mixed. When I moved to Indiana, I discovered a new system. Opponents and proponets of the school bond issue both circulate petitions, and only property owners are allowed to sign. The side with the most signatures wins.

It is a lot easier for people to vote in favor of increasing other peoples’ taxes than it is to vote to raise your own taxes. Obama’s only deficit cutting policy is to increase taxes on the other guy. As Margaret Thatcher said, the problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other peoples’ money.

Evidence? Why he’s*** leading*** Romney on a chase all over Ohio, PA, FL…😛

After the election (wouldn’t want to give you any ideas right now :D), I’ll share with you the single greatest difference I’ve detected between the two candidates…couldn’t put my finger on it until just yesterday, but it finally clicked…and yes, it has to do with leadership.

Yeah…campaigning isn’t “leadership.” In addition to Woodward, here is a nice piece from Paul Krugman from 2010…
Whatever is going on inside the White House, from the outside it looks like moral collapse — a complete failure of purpose and loss of direction.

So what are Democrats to do? The answer, increasingly, seems to be that they’ll have to strike out on their own. In particular, Democrats in Congress still have the ability to put their opponents on the spot — as they did on Thursday when they forced a vote on extending middle-class tax cuts, putting Republicans in the awkward position of voting against the middle class to safeguard tax cuts for the rich.

It would be much easier, of course, for Democrats to draw a line if Mr. Obama would do his part. But all indications are that the party will have to look elsewhere for the leadership it needs.
I’m guessing he’s not singing that tune, now that it is election time. He has to pretend that Obama really is a leader…
