I think you are referring to the news reports that racist and anti-Semitic comments appeared in various Ron Paul newsletters 20-30 years ago.

He apologized for the comments as far back as 2001, saying he wasn’t the author.

Last year, his campaign manager repeated the explanation:

Certainly it raises questions about Paul’s managerial skills and his choice of associates during that time period.
He also has his “South was right” speech and I believe in an anniversary vote on Civil Rights for the 1964 Civil Rights Vote in Congress, unsure of the exact year, he voted against it. He does this on principle but it still might call one into question just like the “lunch counter” issue with Rand Paul. This is the price for being very libertarian I would say if that is the word, that or “the rights of States.”

In fact, from a pro-Ron Paul website.
On July 3, 2004, Ron Paul was the only Congressman to vote against a bill hailing the 40th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. In this speech to Congress, Ron Paul courageously spoke out on the often controversial issues of race relations and affirmative action. He explained why the Civil Right Act had failed to achieve its stated goals of promoting racial harmony and a color-blind society.

Ron Paul No Racist: NAACP Austin President
“Knowing Ron Paul and having talked to him, I think he’s a very fair guy I just think that a lot of folks do not understand the Libertarian platform,” he added.
“I’ve read Ron Paul’s whole philosophy, I also understand what he’s saying from a political standpoint and why people are attacking him,” said Linder.
“If you scare the folks that have the money, they’re going to attack you and they’re going to take it out of context,” he added.
“What he’s saying is really really threatening the powers that be and that’s what they fear,” concluded the NAACP President.

Paul critics can say what they want, but the fact is he was the ONLY lawmaker to keep the Constitution in the public discourse. Lawmakers in both parties like to pretend they’ve forgotten it exists (maybe they have…).

I’m also curious, regardless of your views of the man himself, what people thing about the text of his speech. It strikes me as spot on.

Great men have never been loved by their own generation.
Historical fact.

I thought his speech was remarkable, but it saddens me that he’s leaving because I fear his voice will wind up like whispers in the wind unless more of us start acting on local levels to get us back to the Constitution that he so ardently supported. Free people, free market, anti- big-corporation, anti-war for the large majority of instances. Like JustaServant says: Great men have never been loved by their own generation. I’d probably change “never” to “rarely,” but people generally don’t see the writing on the wall either due to ignorance to willful ignorance.

He was not a racist, or antisemitic. That was far right spin to assure the promotion of far right issues. Sometimes it was used as an ad hominem against his supporters.
No Ron Paul is not a racist or an antisemite, but his followers certainly are.

No Ron Paul is not a racist or an antisemite, but his followers certainly are.
Just like the followers of Barack Obama, only he’s worse because he and his Attorney General alone fuel that fire amongst their followers.

No Ron Paul is not a racist or an antisemite, but his followers certainly are.
I am not a fan of Ron Paul, but I wonder if you meant to write:

“No Ron Paul is not a racist or an antisemite, but some of his followers certainly are.”

Ron Paul is real real big with young people, a lot of your Libertarian types supported Gary Johnson for Ron Paul. I don’t agree with this, I think the two are a lot different.

Rand Paul needs to watch some of what he says though I think he’d be an ideal President.

These Ron Paul “fan” sights, I can read them and I think they are mostly young people who write them and their views are too liberal for me.

I think they base their being fans more on Ron Paul’s “peace views”, being what some would call “isolationist”, with Ron Paul we would not be getting into foreign conflicts though sometimes it might be necessary to do such.

And secondly, the “drug/marijuana” view, leave it to the stattes.

Also the whole thing about “Auditing the Fed”, I think this is his most famous platform and a lot of people agree with this and lowering the National Debt.

Ron Paul is good but I think most of his followers are not really too much like Ron’s son Rand whom I see as Conservative.

There were 2 people in our neighborhood with Ron Paul signs in their yards.

Of course, in this day of American Idol candidates, it wasn’t easy for him, I liked Santorum and Gingrich better. Too bad Gingrich is perceived to have some negative baggage because he’s real smart. Perry and Cain too were good candidates or at least had good ideas.

Things won’t be the same without Ron Paul. I don’t know of anyone I cast more votes for in my lifetime.

Okay correction

Many of Ron Paul followers are racist and antisemtic

I will not miss his ability to fragment the conservative party. Heave ho!
Not to stir up trouble, but my definition of conservative has always been a “slow liberal” so no big loss if the conservative party is fragmented.

Paul is not what I’d consider a conservative nor a liberal. He’s just Ron Paul.

Just talk to a Paul Qaeda and speak out in defense of Israel…you soon get the whole “You are just a NWO neocon scum, I hope the NWO takes over…I’d love to put fascists like you in concerntration camps you scum!” ~ ranting drivel.

I can’t tell you how many Paulite people have said horrid things like that towards me.

Then by your definition, I’m not a Conservative, I’m a reactionary 😃
