Well, I’m glad you finally got to the heart of what you think - that the GOP secretly wants abortion to continue so that they can use it as an issue to get more votes. Really?
I do not think the GOP wants to continue abortion, but I am convinced that if the choice was between ending abortion and ending US dominancy in the world, or not, we would keep abortion. I think most in the GOP like the US being on top more than they hate abortion.

I am trying to imagine a scenario in which we would be faced with that choice. Can you think of one?

But that isnt the choice. One has absolutely has nothing to with the other.

That is the usual excuse of Democrat Catholics as to why its ok to support the party of death. I am somewhat surprised to see a Ron Paul supporter advance the same old tired canard.

What is really strange is Pauls record on abortion is checkered at best-he has a lifetime rating from the National Right to life committe of only 50%-the same, BTW, as Harry reid has. Santorums rating is 100%-yet Paul is held out as a champion of life while Santorum is dereided as actually being pro-abortion. go figure.
I suppose the Paul supporters are operating under the “best defense is a good offense” tactic. Perhaps they think if they say the GOP is outright pro-abortion, then people will not notice Ron Paul’s low scores from legitimate pro-life groups. Then again, I suppose some Paul supporters would counter by saying the pro-life groups are frauds too. You can’t win in a discussion with irrational people.

Yes, since we vote on candidates. It is possible that the strongest anti-abortion candidate is also an isolationist, and considered to be fringe or a nut case. It can happen. Then his choices are weaker on moral issues like abortion but strong on military dominance. So we get a less moral canidate, maybe a moderate on social issues, but one who is big on business and big on military power.

Does this not seem like a possible scenario?

Now then, while I can see where your frustration comes from, is it really charitable and fair to pigeon-hole an entire group like that?
I’m a Paul supporter and I try to be charitable and accurate in my posts.

I don’t think the GOP is pro-abortion, and I think it’s wrong to say that. I simply think Dr. Paul’s position is better than the mainstream. I find no problem with that if I can support my arguments with facts and decent reasoning.

The strongest anti-abortion canidate(Santorum) is not an isolationist nor considered to be a fringe nut case. At any rate ALL of the GOP canidates are far more pro-life than Obama and all of them would be preferable to him on every issue that faces the country.

Well, I’m glad you finally got to the heart of what you think - that the GOP secretly wants abortion to continue so that they can use it as an issue to get more votes. Really? Let’s see, Santorum, Henry Hyde, et al were really frauds who wanted the slaughter to continue to get votes. I appreciate you candor, but at the same time I note that you are accusing good men of being evil. You should probably think about that.
Do you think that all people in politics are honest? Do you think that human nature is perfect? I guess if you believe both things you could dismiss my idea. But if you believed that politics is crooked just as human nature is then you would understand how this could happen. The Republicans have been getting the abortion vote for 40 years despite the fact that it was a Republican court that decided Roe vs. Wade and numerous presidents and Republican controlled congresses did nothing since then to change the legality of abortion in the US.

I am not accusing anyone specifically because I have no specific evidence. I simply believe it is possible that people in politics are liars and that the incentive in government is to not solve problems. Most importantly I believe that I am deserving of enough respect to not be treated as a fool as I believe the Republican leadership does to its voters concerning abortion.
That is the usual excuse of Democrat Catholics as to why its ok to support the party of death. I am somewhat surprised to see a Ron Paul supporter advance the same old tired canard.
I’m a former hardcore Republican. I’ve started to have more respect for Democrat voters. They at least get what they vote for. They get the big social welfare programs they are promised. The government has grown under every Republican administration and congress and abortion is still very much legal.
I do not think the GOP wants to continue abortion, but I am convinced that if the choice was between ending abortion and ending US dominancy in the world, or not, we would keep abortion. I think most in the GOP like the US being on top more than they hate abortion.
It is certainly true their bigger priority is war. And these wars undermine the whole pro life platform. What use is it to be pro life in the womb but have very little respect for it once it leaves? Gingrich’s answer to how to deal with enemies of the US is ‘kill them’. What a disgusting statement.

Ad hominem. Ron Paul supporters are not generally irrational. What would you call voting for the same people who never deliver ANY results? And what is the GOP solution to abortion given that the SCOTUS said it is a fundamental right and subsequent courts, including one that had 8 of 9 Republican nominees have upheld that basic right? Irrational would seem to be a solution that involves more laws that are unconstitutional as judged by the court.

Vote Ron Paul today if you live in South Carolina! We are a government for the people, by the people, and of the people, and nothing’s gonna get better in this country unless the people change their thinking.

Ron Paul is the only pro-life candidate. He promotes a free society, and God gave us free will because he loved us so much. We should have a government that reflects that.

Ron Paul wants to end US interference in countries overseas. It is not pro-life to support war.

I left the “Party of Lincoln” because I hate tyranny more than I love a particular hunk of land. I am no longer mesmorized and bamboozled at the fallacious arguement about how Lincoln saved the Republic". He destroyed it and in its place he established the American Empire.
👍👍👍

If as CNN says only 3% of 18-24-year-olds voted in SC primary that might be bad for Ron Paul

Nor can you win by insulting people.

I do not base my opinion of someone’s position on what another group says. I do weigh with what Catholic groups say, but even then I let the candidate, with his record, speak for himself.

I do not know that he is the strongest, but I have already stated that I would probably vote for him if he won the nomination. His deviation from just war doctrine concerns me, but not enough to discount him.

Paul is now 0-3. He should get out- but he wont
Ooooooh. Three states out of 50 have voted. I hate our primary system. I would prefer living in a more democratic country. Perhaps we can import some democracy before we worry about exporting it.

I will vote for Ron Paul when my time comes, in or out.

I think those who accuse Santorum and other sincere pro-life Republicans of being frauds are irrational. I say that because no matter what arguments or facts you tell them, they insist that Santorum is a fraud and wants abortion to continue to get the GOP more votes. You can’t argue with people like that because they are irrational. **I don’t include you in that group at all **- you support Paul and are disenchanted with the GOP, but you listen to other points of view. There are other Paul supporters on the forum who are like you in that way. But, there are some who don’t seem to be rational in their thought, it seems to me.

I admire your persistence, but wouldn’t you agree that political reality means that if you don’t win the key primaries in the beginning, you are pretty much done? Bachmann understood that when she lost Iowa, Perry figured it out when he failed to gain any traction and win a primary. Out of the four candidates remaining, all have won a primary except Ron Paul. He came in 3rd in Iowa, last in South Carolina and 2nd in New Hampshire. He is in last place in single digits in Florida. The primaries are about momentum. If Santorum loses Florida, he is out. That is the political reality, and its democratic. My guess is that Ron Paul will stay in as long as possible to raise awareness about the issues. I don’t think it was ever about him winning. He never had a serious chance.

That is why I said “some” Ron Paul supporters. The ones who are questioning Santorum’s pro-life sincerity I would genuinely put in the irrational category. I say that with no intention of being uncharitable. I have tried to make points to convince them otherwise but they insist that Santorum wants abortion to continue so the GOP can get more votes. They make no sense. Again, I don’t include you or most Ron Paul supporters in that group, just a few.

No.

Can you think of a time since Roe V Wade where that has happened?

I think that is the scenario in the making this year. I believe that to be what happened four years ago. The Republican moderate McCain lost. Compromise does not always work.
