I never was a fan of Roseanne’s or her particular brand of humor. There is one exception, however. Years ago, I saw her in an SNL sketch in which she played a customer service representative on an early-morning (3 AM or so) shift. She responded to a customer who thought she should be able to help him that if she had the answers to customers’ questions, what would she be doing working the late, late shift and speaking to a loser like him 3 AM? THAT was funny.

True, it doesn’t. But Rosanne was clearly making light of the Holocaust.

I understand why they pulled her, but I’m disappointed too because I really liked her show, including the reboot. I don’t think “The Connors” will be good and I’m certain it won’t be as good as “Roseanne”. If it was me, I probably would have taken away her phone and given her another chance, but I’m a white woman and life has made me accustomed to rolling my eyes and forgiving most of the racially insensitive crap I get to hear from the elder generation.

I liked her old show until everybody was gay and worse, they won the lottery.

I enjoyed catching up with the characters during the reboot but I didn’t watch it often because I never knew when it was on, but sometimes I stumbled on it.

It was on Tuesday nights. I know because that is the one night of the week we have a kids’ activity.

One controversial comment and everyone made a big stink about it and cancelled a show they’d already renewed. Where were they when she did that kind of thing in the past? Roseanne was just being Roseanne when she made the comment/joke. She was just being Roseanne all the other times as well.

As for the revamped show, it’s been done before (Valerie’s Family/The Hogan Family/The Hogans). Losing the star of the show and title character doesn’t have to be the end of a series. It is an opportunity for the rest to shine.

I will watch The Conners with or without Roseanne in it. Yes, the character of Roseanne Conner could die. In the last episode, she told Dan she had put off having knee surgery because she was afraid she would die on the operating table. It’s very possible the writers will go with that.

Maybe it will pick up after the surgery with them getting the devastating news that she didn’t make it and there be a funeral. Or they could pick up the series several years after Roseanne’s death.

I don’t think the writers would be foolish enough to pair Dan (John Goodman) with Roseanne’s sister, Jackie (Laurie Metcalf). Maybe they should just let him remain a widower who is content not to have another woman in his life. Let Dan revel in his children and grandchildren.

I nominate @Allegta for head of the president’s Secret Service details.

“Why, yes, sir, thumbless mittens are the latest stylish accessory for high end suits!”

🤣

Why is it okay for dems to call trump an orange idiot but it’s not ok for Roseanne to say Valerie looks like an ape? I mean who cares? People have said wayyyyy worse about Roseanne and no one has cared.

The reason is that the first instance was an attack on one single disagreeable person, while the second instance was an attack on a person’s race. The difference is that when you make an insult about someone’s race, you are not only insulting that person, but everyone who shares that person’s race. That’s why racist comments are regarded as unacceptable, no matter how vile the individual target is. You are not just expressing contempt for that person, but all persons that share that superficial trait. That’s the same reason it’s considered particularly horrendous to make comments on a person’s ethnicity, disability, physical fitness, or gender.

I don’t think it was racist. I think she was saying she was ugly. Plenty of people have called Roseanne a pig and that’s okay but when Roseanne calls someone an ape that’s not okay. It’s double standard crap

That may have been her purpose, but the terms “ape” and “monkey” have been used to disparage the appearance of black people for a long time. She may not have thought of that when she wrote that, but that’s why one should think before they write. I actually know of a para-educator who was very harshly disciplined for referring to black students as “my little monkeys”. In the context of the conversation, it as obvious that she was referring to a group of kids who loved doing gymnastics-like tricks on the playground equipment and required extra vigilant supervision for safety reasons. She used the term affectionately and as a white woman, she wasn’t even considering the racist history of the term. Most likely, she had described her own children as monkeys at one time or other, possibly dressing them in monkey-themed pajamas. She simply wasn’t aware of how offensive the term is and the connotation it unintentionally carried. Because it was obvious from the context that her intent was not racist, she didn’t lose her job, but she was disciplined and required to take a course.

You honestly don’t understand the difference between criticizing a person’s behavior and criticizing a person’s race?

“Ape” is a common racist slur. It’s not a racism slur against white people.

I don’t think she meant it that way but I think people want to think she meant it that way. I think she was comparing her to a character in planet of the apes. It was offensive but not racist.

Perhaps don’t use radially charged language and people won’t mistake it for racism.

Maybe not, but that is the risk you take when you use words that are commonly used as racist slurs.
