What these women did made (some of) us do some research.

Putin (no doubt worried about bad press) has himself said he does not support a stiff sentence.

Freedom of expression sometimes looks ugly - but silence is uglier.

Like the car sticker says:** If you think education is expensive try ignorance.**

Here’s a version based on these events:

If you think freedom of expression is distasteful try censorship.

BTW Bearer - you’ve got two links in your sig - one on rights of conscience and one on the HHS mandate. These girls are fighting the same battle!
Even freedom of expression has limits. The Westboro Baptist Church cannot hold their protests within a certain number of feet of a funeral. The case here with the charge of hooliganism is similar. That is not to say that there are not abuses in Russia concerning free speech, but this case is not really a good example, since there is even a legal precedent in other ‘free’ countries for limiting the freedom of speech in certain locations.

It wasn’t right to protest in a church. However, I have a feeling the reason they are being charged is because they oppose Putin more than the fact that the government finds it blasphemous to do that in a church.

They did not have to protest Putin in a Church. What they did was sick…and they should be punished appropriately.

You are both missing the point. They are being charged for hooliganism, that is, for their disruptive act on property where they had no permission to be. What they were singing is inconsequential; although, the offensive nature of the lyrics bears witness to their ill intentions, and may cause them to be given a stricter sentence.
You’re right.
There’s a very good chance that they will be given a stricter sentence for insulting Putin.

Throw the book at 'em. Even in the USA (which is, lest anyone here on this heavily USA-leaning website miss it, is not Russia), freedom of speech protections apply to what you say more so than what you do (e.g., there are separate laws governing freedom of assembly), and even then both are regulated as the state sees fit (the old “crowded movie house” standard, for example).

I’m not aware of any law, anywhere, that says you can break into a church to hold a political protest and concert and when you’re arrested whine and cry that your freedom of speech is being trampled on. That’s just dumb. As Cavaradossi pointed out, it also has nothing to do with the content of their work, though this may be a factor in the sentencing stage (that’s really no different than a judge in the USA taking into account the potential motivation for a crime in order to determine if it was premeditated, by the way).

Well, it was completely disrespectful… Freedom of speech is one thing but to insult worshippers like that, completely uncalled for! They could of protested outside the church. If I were to break into a college lecture room and act completely inappropriate, there would be some form punishment. It’s sad to see how one sided this is, all because the west has a political agenda against Russia because they won’t let us push them around. I just don’t know sometimes.

With that said… 7 years is way too much, I’d give them some unpleasant community service. 👍

Sick. Sick. Sick.

They should be tied down, dragged out, tied to the bumpers of cop cars and whatever is left be taken jail.

Ah, an internet Tough Guy:rolleyes:

How do you think actual murderers and rapists should be treated?

You are correct again. Sometimes old prejudices and mindsets are difficult to shed. I will admit, before I became Orthodox, (via the Ruthenian Catholic to the Russian Orthodox Church), I also had this vision of a repressive post communist Russia being America’s adversary.

I have a much more balanced view of the situation now…I think. 😃

Take a look at how the supporters of this so called band are trying to provoke Christians rt.com/news/*****-riot-international-support-775/

**The fact that internationally known perverts like Madonna are attacking Russia should tell us the government there must be doing something right**.
Not really.

When the Soviets became enemies of the evil Nazis did that suddenly make them nice guys?

No.

The enemy of my enemy is not necessarily a good person:shrug:

So okay, I feel the blasphemy is bad, but I think the big issue is that these “musicians” feel that the state has too much influence on the church, and vice versa. Even though it might seem great if it happened, do any of you think it would be good if catholicism was made the state church (more likely it would just be christianity). I guess I see it as if we persecute those who hate us (i.e people who talk bad of the church) then those who hate us might want to get rid of us. It’s a slippery slope. I don’t support blasphemy (the band should have been a lot smarter), but would any of you rather have a theocracy like Iran where anyone not of our religion is put in jail

A theocracy is not a good thing at all.
