Actually, I would be if such could be found in public life today. I know of none who occupy positions of public influence similar to that of Paul Ryan who admire militant communists.
Well, there was Anita Dunn, for one. Guess Vann Jones never made it, though. And, of course, there’s Barack Obama whose onetime idol and mentor was Frank Marshall Davis, a communist. Maybe he learned some things from Davis and maybe he didn’t. And, of course, there’s Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers. But maybe Obama never heard anything they said.

Well, I find it not silly, but troubling, that a Catholic politician like Paul Ryan would proudly cite as an influence someone like Ayn Rand: a wretched human being who promulgated a wretched philosophy inimical to the Catholic Church’s understanding of the common good. Her contempt for Christianity is well documented. Her contempt for religion in general has been well established. The quotes I posted are not hyperbolic statements, made in the heat of the moment by an otherwise level-headed individual. Rather, they are indicative of her world view, cooly made aforethought. Are you saying her atheism, her hostility to religion, her contempt for Christianity should be ignored, or have no bearing on discussion of her philosophy, just because you happen to like something she said about individual self reliance?
If Ryan swallowed Rand’s philosophy hook, line and sinker, you would have a point. But there’s no evidence that he does. Socrates was at least accused of being an atheist, yet we read his dialogues. Aristotle was accused of it as well. Virtually every economic theorist is at least pantheistic like Adam Smith. John Maynard Keynes, whose economics Obama and Democrats follow, was an agnostic and eugenicist. Does their Keyensianism make Obama and Harry Reid agnostics and supporters of eugenics? And, of course, in being a promoter of abortion, are we to assume that Obama is, like Margaret Sanger, also a racist?
