I’m only 15 and just a beginner Catholic, and I wasn’t aware of ALL the misinterpretation of Catholocism by other branches of Christianity. But now I have some idea. I found a website called
jesus-is-savior.com, which devoted a lot of time to terrible misinterpretation through words, pictures, etc. Of Roman Catholocism. It shocked me. Naively, I hadn’t thought of what wrong things others might be reading about the faith. The website claimed that Catholics worship Mary, Catholics are heretics, the rosary is from the devil, etc. The whole thing has made me extremely sad. Have you seen this website personally, or had a similar experience of shock that I’ve had? How can anyone believe those things against the church?
I know I’ve posted to you already in this thread but I wanted to do so once again. I am so sorry that some people are taking your question and throwing it away and bringing up new stuff which doesn’t even belong here.
Do you have a favorite priest? Why don’t you talk to him, if you feel comfortable? Unfortunately being a Catholic means that we have to put up with people who are jealous of us, afraid of us, in awe of us, or misunderstand us and hate us. I didn’t know that people actually hated Catholics until I started posting. I found out quickly. Most of it had to do with misinterpretation of our doctrine. One poster said something like “You Catholics worship Mary and don’t you tell me that I’m wrong because I know they do in Mexico!!” Well, yeah, Catholics sometimes do things that go against Church doctrine. We are all sinners. Some Catholics steal, some murder. Some Protestants steal, some murder. All people sin. All people err. Our Church is a hospital for sinners.
Sometimes people think that Catholics believe in the complete infallibility of the Pope. If the truth is pointed out to them (that the Pope is only infallible in certain, rare statements (
ex cathedra) they usually say that they didn’t know that and thank me for putting them straight.
There used to be a billboard on a major interstate in Oregon. It said “The Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon” and every time I passed it I felt ill because it was such a cruel and untrue thing to say. That sign is gone now (I believe - at least I haven’t seen it) but there is still that mentality among many.
When you decided to become a Catholic, especially at such a young age, you made the correct decision. The Catholic Church is the true Church, founded by Jesus. But we have free speech in this country and people can say what they want, even if it’s wrong.
Ignore them, or if you feel very strong in your fatih, become a warrior and fight for the truth. They are
wrong. They will say things to confuse you and/or even hurt you. Catholics have put up with this for 2000 years and that is a long time.
Just remember that you have discovered the Truth and rejoice in that.
Again, I am so proud of you!!
May God bring you peace,
Christina
