Sharing this reflection from today’s Euchalette on today’s Scripture Readings for the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, p.4:

THE WISDOM THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

"The Lord has been tremendously generous with each of us. But, in spite of the great abundance of God’s gifts, most of us try to have even more and to acquire new ones.

We are prepared to work hard, make big sacrifices and even renounce a portion of what we already have, in order to acquire what we consider more valuable and deserving.

But in this pursuit, we are always in danger of losing out, or being deceived by appearances … Many of us have an inadequate sense of values. Our priorities are sometimes mistaken. We invest our energies and even stake our whole lives on things that ‘moth and rust corrode, or thieves break in and steal’ (Mt 6:19). And so, at the end of our life, we find ourselves empty-handed, or with mounds of things that are totally valueless for the life to come.

We need real wisdom. Not just the wisdom ‘to distinguish right from wrong’ (1Kgs 3:9), but the wisdom necessary to prioritize values and give to the highest ones the place they deserve. We need the ‘wisdom of God’, the one possessed in full by Jesus. We need the wisdom that leads us to give absolute priority to ‘God’s Kingship and His way of holiness’ (Mt 6:33)." (p.4.)
(Read on for continuation of thought.)

THE WISDOM THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE” - continued:

"Of all the values on earth, being part of the ‘Kingdom of God’ is among the top few that we should try to acquire or preserve at all costs. On this depends the attainment of our final destiny. Jesus made the ‘coming of the Kingdom’ the second request in the prayer he taught his disciples (see Mt 5:9-13). And he exhorted them: ‘Seek first God’s kingship over you’ (Mt 6:33).

The Kingdom, therefore, must be our top priority. The quest for the Kingdom is the enterprise on which we should invest all our resources because, in the end, this is the only venture that will really succeed…

There have been people in the past, and there are so many at present, who do not take the values of the Kingdom seriously. They even doubt or refuse to believe altogether that God’s Kingdom exists at all! All that counts, for them, is the material or emotional satisfaction they can derive from the things they can touch and count. These are **the people whose god is their belly and who boast of actions they should be ashamed of … **(See Phil 3:19.) These are the people who are headed for utter destruction." (The Euchalette, 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 30, 2017, p.4.)
(Read on for continuation of thought.)

THE WISDOM THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE” - continued:

"On the opposite side of the scale are the saints - people who have made and still make their own the priorities of Jesus Christ, the values of the Kingdom. Having come to appreciate the preciousness of moral and religious values such as charity, purity, honesty, sincerity, prayer, and intimacy with the Lord, they have rejected so many enticements of this world in order to acquire such values; they have fought and fight to preseve them or reconquer them… The saints of all times cling to these virtues as most valuable treasures, even if others laugh at them or call them ‘crazy’ and ‘deranged’.

The saints
smile at all this, for they know that ‘He laughs best who laughs last.’ They will be the ones who will laught last and will continue to smile happily for ever, while those who had a ‘good time’ for a time will regret for ever having despised and rejected the values of the Kingdom." (The Euchalette, 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 30, 2017, p.4.)
