Sandals at Mass?

I’m an usher at my Church and I see the same people a least once a week at Mass and I couldn’t tell you what kind of shoes they wear. I make sure that my dress shoes are shined and I know to wear my black New Balance walking shoes if the service will be a long one…as does our Priest. IMHO the only one who pays any attention to what shoes are worn to Mass is the person wearing them.

Carlos, they are very nice sandals and you should be proud wearing them to Mass…with or without sock, black or white. He is more interested in having you there, honoring Him then what you have on your feet. Anyone judging what shoes someone wears to Mass is attending for the wrong reason. The only feet that I’m sure of each Sunday are those of Jesus on the cross and they are bare. I’m going to go out on a limb and bet that, even though they are handsome, few will notice.

Now some of the young teens I work with have a great eye for name brands of all of the above. They have boxes of expensive shoes. I sometimes will mention Imelda to them. THey have no idea.

I have been watching the third series of Downton Abbey. The horror was not wearing formal EVENING wear to dinner. The shirts had disappeared. Of course to my untrained 21st century eyes Matthew looked very well dressed. They had also looked down at the poor son in law’ who had no dinner dress too.

I have heard of business wear that insist women wear heals. I hope we never go there for church

I did check your profile but there was no indication to say whether you were male or female and I’m afraid I haven’t read enough of your other posts for clues.

I prefer the environment we had when I worked for a particular Unisys division back in the late 1980s. When I went to an internal interview (I was transferring from a more “formal” division) the manager was wearing shorts and, if I remember correctly, flip-flops.

Franciscans, Carmelites and Dominicans are not lazy!! Yet, they all wear sandals to church.

I guess we can excuse their footwear since they are religious, but as for those lazy, apathetic, sandals-wearing laypeople, there’s no excuse.

Exactly. I say laypeople should just throw their sandals away lest they be tempted to enter a Catholic Church with them. Or better yet send them to a religious community.

Better for you to enter into the Church with non-sandaled feet
than with two sandaled feet to be thrown into Gehenna!



And yes I am kidding. I don’t understand the sandal hangup some people have.

Any of us that don’t look like clowns at Mass have wive’s to tell us that navy blue socks don’t go with black dress shoes and you can’t wear brown shoes with a black suit. At least I think she said that once…we also have selective hearing. BUT if someone walks buy wearing camo, we’d be able to tell you if the pattern is Realtree or Mossy Oak.

Jesus Christ did not wear wingtips.

I just got a pair of “Franciscan” sandals from Italy and I was wondering if it would be appropriate to wear them at Mass? It’s not like I’d wear them just at Mass, but I kind of want to wear them everywhere and I’m at the church pretty often so I’m just wondering if it’s okay.

I would not dare show up as an altar server in anything less than my button-down, collared white shirt, black dress pants with belt, and black dress shoes. Father has been known to turn away would-be servers who do not meet the dress code. Likewise, he has had some stern talks with the choir director about members wearing proper clothing. We live in an area where it gets extremely hot, and men and women alike must be reminded each summer of the importance of decorum and modesty in dress. A section in the bulletin is dedicated to this purpose during the hot months.

Interesting. At the church I am attending, ( with a wide range of incomes- mostly quite affluent) almost all of the men are in scandals, jeans or cargo shorts. A dressed up man is in a polo shirt! Women are in jeans, and slacks…I am totally out of place in a skirt. I guess I will have to go buy some pants for church!
