Why do you think that Saturday Mass is skipped so much in our parishes?

The votive Mass for the Blessed Virgin Mary is virtuallly never said except on her feast days.

There should be a movement to correct this. Two Masses in one more day of the week doesn’t seem like much of a burden.

Saturday morning Masses used to be said always, in the days of the Tridentine Mass.

What do you think?

As we only have one priest, we do not have a regular Mass on Saturday morning. Although there is usually a Wedding Mass scheduled or a funeral. Since a priest is limited on how many masses he can offer in a day, we are not able to have a Saturday Mass scheduled except for the above reasons. He of course has to say the Saturday Vigil Mass so any other Mass would have to be a Wedding or funeral Mass.

We have weekday mass and it is well attended. We manage to attend a Saturday morning Mass at a parish which has more priests and a retired priest says that one.

See above. Not enough priests. Growing up TLM we had a small parish and 2 priests. Not the case now days and I don’t think we can clone em. 😉

My parish doesn’t have Saturday morning Mass, just Saturday evening. I wish they did have Saturday morning because I’d be there-and how!

I spend my Saturday morning at Holy Hour and Confession. I’d go to Mass everyday, but it’s at 8:30am and 11:30am, and I can’t go to those because I have three children and my husband works during the day. And watching Mass on EWTN doesn’t have the same effect as being there, worshipping with everyone.

We have one priest and he says Mass 7 days a week. Daily Mass is Mon-Sat 9 AM.

We are blessed to Saturday morning Mass followed by two priests hearing confession. I go approximately every other week and there are usually anywhere from 10-20 people in each line–including adolescents and teens!. Our beautiful new, traditional church is filled with statues of saints and beautiful stained glass windows and one of the most beautiful crucifixes I’ve ever seen (Christ wears a real crown on thorns). Our pastor turns on Gregorian chant music that fills the sanctuary while we examine our conscience and do our penance.

It is not unusual for our chapel to be filled with 100+ people for daily Mass.

We are so very blessed!

Debbie

p.s. I should mention we have two priests for over 2500 families. And if I may boast a bit we have four vocations (three seminarians and one man in the diaconate formation program). Our first Mass was in a high school auditorium six short years ago. Thanks be to God, we have an incredibly vibrant parish! Next time you’re in Alpharetta, Georgia stop by St. Brigid Catholic Church! www.saintbrigid.org

We have a Saturday Morning Mass and the evening Vigil Mass…but then we have two priests to carry the load.

We always have a Saturday morning Mass unless Father is away (vacation, retreat etc). We just have the one priest and the diocese only allocated substitutes to cover Sunday Mass, not anything else. So no daily Mass, no confessions, no Holy Hour etc when Father is away.

Strangely, we do not have Mass on Fridays unless it is First Friday.

Saturday morning mass is a staple at our parish (St. Vincent de Paul - Fort Wayne, IN). A group of men from my Christ Renews His Parish team meets for breakfast at 6:30 every Saturday and then we head over to mass afterwards. A great way to start the day! Now if I can just get my sorry behind up early enough to attend daily mass during the week, I’d be all set! 🙂

Your Brother in Christ,
Derek

I live in a large parish and we have one Saturday morning Mass and two Daily Masses (three on Tuesdays). Then things get busy: two Saturday vigil Masses and eight Masses on Sunday.

Plus two wedding Masses every Saturday (additional weddings ocassionally on weekday evenings).

Oh, yeah. There is an additional Mass for First Fridays.

Our church has First Saturday only.
My sisters and I were upnorth this weekend and my sister who is a nun was looking for a Saturday Mass called all the parishes in the area to no avail.
I tried to explain to her that Saturday was dropped by many priests due to the fact they have sometimes 2 weddings scheduled, funerals that just pop on the schedule, confession, and an evening Mass.
To a nun of course Saturday Morning Mass should be said everywhere.
We did find a retired diocesan priest that had Mass for my sisters and I, and surprisingly enough we got there early and he was sitting in the confessional.
He gave a sermon on the importance of a priest, being early, and always being ready to hear anyones confession.
So it was a very beautiful morning, as he joined us for breakfast after confession and Mass.
It pays to have a sister that is a nun.

I don’t know of any churches in the area that have Mass 7 days a week, most skip Wed., Fri. or Sat, whatever is the priest’s day off. Most weddings and funerals here are done by the deacons, unless a Mass is specifically requested. I know of only a couple of parishes that have more than one priest, usually those staffed by religious orders. If you want to attend daily Mass (not a communion service), you have to hop around town and know the schedules. You cannot keep a First Friday or First Saturday devotion in most parishes without shoppign around for Masses (same holds true for confession, know where to go, get their early).

Our parish has daily Mass, but:

Due to our aging/dying community and the assignment of only 1 & 1/2 priests*, our daily Mass schedule was recently altered: 10 o’clock Mass daily, but the Mass will supplanted by a funeral Mass as necessary (and the prior intention celebrated at the next possible opportunity).

To tell the truth, my daily attendance has fallen off since that change 😦 , partly because I feel uncomfortable “crashing” someone’s funeral, but mostly because 10:00 is less convenient that the former schedule (either 9 or noon).

(* The other 1/2 he works with another community in the diocese)

“He of course has to say the Saturday Vigil Mass so any other Mass would have to be a Wedding or funeral Mass.”

No, he doesn’t have to say the Vigil Mass. That is such a stupid name for it, by the way (not that you made it up, but it is just stupid). A Vigil is the MASS of the day before, not the next day’s Mass done early. I don’t even know when or why it was invented (I know it was sometime after the fabricated Novus Ordo). Moreover, a Priest is permitted to say more than one Mass in a day, if need be. Usually on Sunday he is allowed up to three Masses (I think). The Vigil counts as a Sunday Mass. I don’t see how he concludes that he cannot have a Saturday morning Mass with the Vigil. If anything, if he thinks he can only have one Mass, and if he chose the Vigil, THAT would be his only Mass, since it is a Mass of SUNDAY, not Saturday (this is based around the fact that all major feasts, including all Sundays, have two Vespers, the evening before the day, which would be Saturday, and the evening of the day, which would be Sunday. A feast begins with its FIRST Vespers, if it has one, so Vespers can be pushed as early as 4 PM, I suppose, since that is when the “Vigil” Masses can begin; however, the normative time for Vespers is 5 PM. Therefore, the day Liturgically has chnaged at Vespers, so the Vigil Mass is the first Mass of the Sunday.) Of course, the whole idea of using a Mass of the next day is bogus, and was one of the many fabrications of the NO.

As far as the Masses at my church: we have two on Saturday mornings. We have two everyday, since we have two Priests. Then again, I go to Traditional Latin Mass. I know most NO Priests will not say Mass on their “days off”–what a joke…

And just how many NO priests do you know to make that blanket statement?

Up until several years ago, we had two Saturday morning Masses - 7:00 AM and 8:15 AM. The 8:15 AM Mass was so sparsely attended, it was cancelled. Now we have only the 7:00 AM Mass.

One must endeavor to think in a charitable way, however difficult that might be. A Priest “can” say more than one Mass per day if necessary. They can also have the Sacrament of Reconcilliation for more than a half an hour on Saturdays. We absolutely must pray for our Bishops and Priests. More and more of the Clergy are opting to celebrating fewer and fewer of the Sacraments but there seems to be time to know sports scores etc. etc… No wonder the sheep are scattering . We know there are “dedicated” Priests out there, so do not be hurt by our posts. You are also prayed for and God knows “who” you are, we just wish you were in “our” parishes. (smile).
Mary, refuge of sinners, pray for us,
Peace on earth to men of good will.

No, he doesn’t have to say the Vigil Mass.

Except in so far as it has been scheduled and a perhaps a stipend accepted for it, I presume.

And while the Vigil does fulfill one’s obligation, I believe that canonically the day is still Saturday (cf. CIC 202)* and a priest is still bound by whatever constraints apply to that day.

(* But it goes without saying that I am not a Canon Lawyer)

We do not have Saturday morning Mass but I really wish we did. We have weekday Masses at 8:00 Mon thru Fri but I can’t attend those because I am at work at that time. I only attend Mass once a week, on Sunday. But I would love it if my hometown parish would have it on Saturday mornings so I could get to more than one Mass a week!

I really think that part of the problem is that too many priests think that they are binating on Saturday if they have a morning and an evening Mass on Saturday. But this is not the case, for if the evening Mass is for Sunday, then he couldn’t possibly be saying two Masses on Saturday, rather, he’s saying one on Saturday and one on “Sunday.”

We have Saturday am mass on the 1st Saturdays only. In the past when there was a regular Saturday Mass attendance was very low-about four people. It was eventually cancelled.
