Scheidler: Jenkins Remains Utterly Immovable on ND 88 Says talking to Jenkins about the issue like talking to a "stone"

At least, we can put our names on the Petition to free the ND 88.

A word in the title jogs the memory about millstones…and water…

Has everyone “signed” the MANHATTAN DECLARATION?
 
Was there a reason that they couldn’t lawfully protest?

And that really does say it all. The school is a PRIVATE school.

Had the people who protested been at the University of Southern California they probably would not have been arrested because it is public property.

Had they protested at a school either wholly or partially owned by a religious order or in some way affiliated with the Catholic Church they would not have been arrested.

Instead they protested at a private school. When Fr. Norm Weslin was arrested I could not figure out how that could happen at Notre Dame; he was caring a cross, no sign or poster just a large cross. Security was obviously waiting for him because he didn’t go ten feet without being arrested on Notre Dame’s property. That is when I found that they are just another private non-profit corporation under Indiana law.

For the “Domers” that will be upset by this, please check the public record.
 
When a Catholic school chooses to be a private school and not a Catholic school, then they shouldn’t be surprised when many Catholics, myself included, will not support them.

What you said is correct and I was also shocked to see a Catholic priest arrested on the Notre Dame campus. I hope the Domers will see the reality of the situation and not be swayed by feelings of loyalty, etc.
 
Perhaps people here need to realize that while from LEGAL point of view Notre Dame, being a Private University can do this from LEGAL perspective, that Father Jenkins is not a lawyer nor is involved in the Legal Justice System. It is outright scandalous that he would continue to pursue this course of action.

This case reminds me of the parable that Jesus spoke of in St. Matthew’s Gospel (Chapter 18: 21-35) where a certain man owed a large debt to the King and the King forgave him but then the man put in jail another person who owed him a smaller amount. When the King heard this, he put the man in jail until he paid all he owed.

In this case the King is God and the man is Father Jenkins. Even if inviting Obama was a good thing, the fact that he would cruelly jail these people who protest what Obama stands for (Unrestricted Abortion) is so wrong.
 
It’s a pity pro life Catholics are jailed while a pro abortion president gets an award

What is wrong with this picture?

I couldn’t agree more…and it seems to be that there is not much humility in Fr Jenkins either

I like that - it certainly does fit the story perfectly.
 
The incident hurt Fr Jenkin’s pride. As long as his pride remains his priority, he holds a grudge against all these protesters who caused him so much pain. He has hardened his heart against them and for all intents and purposes plays the part of a man who wants to even the score.

This is personal for him now.
 
The frightening thing about Fr. Jenkins for me is – if Joe Scheidler, who has sacrificed so much for the pro-life cause and the Catholic cause, couldn’t reach Fr. Jenkins with a reasonable discussion on the protestors … who could ever correct him? Apparently, his bishop cannot or won’t because he’s part of ND and not the diocese?

It’s a strange situation. Maybe the financial boycott from alumni is the only way to get through to him. That is risky though because the university will lose funding that it needs (I assume).
 
I thought that there were many more than 88 protestors. If so, how did these 88 distinguish themselves to get arrested?

Notre Dame is in the diocese of Fort Wayne - South Bend. If the bishop chooses he can prohibit teaching the catholic religion by the school. He could also insist that references to being Catholic in their advertising be removed, this would not be much of a penalty since they have down played connection with the church for years. Of course there are more measures that he could take against the clergy on campus but that would be getting more radical than the situation deserves.

While I believe that withholding contributions will eventually get their attention; loss of respect is taking a much greater toll. What distinguishes Notre Dame from Purdue or Indiana University? Nothing, they are all good secular schools; none of them have accepted “Ex Corde Ecclesia”.

Actually, the Univ. of Southern California is also private, unlike UCLA, for example.

I actually can empathize with private institutions wanting to keep their grounds private (security issues come to mind immediately) but this is ill-thought-out, to say the least, and will do more harm than good.
