A warmer atmosphere is typically a more energetic atmosphere.
Untrue. Neptune has the coldest atmosphere in the solar system, and also has the strongest winds.
Most of the winds on Neptune blow in a westward direction, which is retrograde, or opposite to the rotation of the planet. Near the Great Dark Spot, there are retrograde winds blowing up to 2,400 kilometers per hour (1,500 miles an hour) – the strongest winds measured on any planet, including windy Saturn.

Currently, Pluto’s atmosphere is coldest. And relatively calm.

But yes, the most energy would be in the hottest atmosphere, other things being equal.

Darn, Al Gore is now responsible for food prices and hurricanes?

That rascal.
I never said Al Gore is responsible for food prices and hurricanes. Maybe I need to connect the dots for you. First off, I said “food shortages”, I never said anything about price. Secondly, Al Gores’s STICK is any weather related calamity is always the consequence of his fictitious claim that man’s warming of the climate is the result of these disasters. As far as the 1953 tornado in Waco, Tx… if Al Gore were on center stage back then, he would be suggesting the disaster was related to global warming. Problem with that is
the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s was a 30 year cycle of cooling. Please don’t come back with one of those silly graphs to dispute this claim. It is factual and
even the global warming alarmist of today readily admit to that. Someone mentioned climate is not weather…weather is our climate and climate is
our weather. Climate is the word used by Gore all the time. Br-r-r! it’s been
cold here in N.E.Ohio this Spring, kinda makes you feel like you are living in Anchorage. Excuse me while I put another log on the fire.

Hi Tmts,

Your post is quite accurate.

A minor quibble:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shtick

And also, there WERE protests during the 1950’s … it was said by some commentators that strange weather was due to atomic testing. So, eventually, “atomic testing” [open air testing in Nevada … at the Nevada Test Site, a suburb of Las Vegas] was stopped and ta-da, the strange weather continued.

Of course, none of the protesters said, “oops, maybe it WASN’T the atomic testing, after all.”

And if you’re ever in Las Vegas, they just opened an Atomic Testing Museum (a couple of years ago), which is quite interesting. You can even buy a satellite photo of the NTS showing the craters. In all, about 1000 nukes were fired off there, although most were underground.

atomictestingmuseum.org/

About the only shortcoming of the Atomic Testing Museum is (or was; the oversight may have been corrected) is that it lacks satellite photos of the Soviet and Chinese nuclear test facilities … to provide some frame of historical context. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semipalatinsk_Test_Site

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novaya_Zemlya#Nuclear_testing

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lop_Nur

But I digress.

Got to thinking about that graph of “Temperature Anomaly” versus time.

It’s not additive or cumulative.

So, the total temperature change since they started “counting” is only 0.6 degrees or so.

It’s not a great great graph because it is so easy to misapply or misinterpret.

For some reason, “they” have decided not to use actual temp but instead are using “anomaly”.

Kinda weird.

Since the base temp, to which we add or subtract the anomaly, is nowhere stated. And the base temp is arbitrary. It just depends on what year one decides to start the graph at.

[Apologies for ending the sentence with a preposition.]

Don’t fight, adapt
We should give up futile attempts to combat climate change

Open Letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations

Dec. 13, 2007

His Excellency Ban Ki-Moon

Secretary-General, United Nations

New York, N.Y.

Dear Mr. Secretary-General,

Re: UN climate conference taking the World in entirely the wrong direction

It is not possible to stop climate change, a natural phenomenon that has affected humanity through the ages. Geological, archaeological, oral and written histories all attest to the dramatic challenges posed to past societies from unanticipated changes in temperature, precipitation, winds and other climatic variables. We therefore need to equip nations to become resilient to the full range of these natural phenomena by promoting economic growth and wealth generation.

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has issued increasingly alarming conclusions about the climatic influences of human-produced carbon dioxide (CO2), a non-polluting gas that is essential to plant photosynthesis. While we understand the evidence that has led them to view CO2 emissions as harmful, the IPCC’s conclusions are quite inadequate as justification for implementing policies that will markedly diminish future prosperity. In particular, it is not established that it is possible to significantly alter global climate through cuts in human greenhouse gas emissions. On top of which, because attempts to cut emissions will slow development, the current UN approach of CO2 reduction is likely to increase human suffering from future climate change rather than to decrease it.

The IPCC Summaries for Policy Makers are the most widely read IPCC reports amongst politicians and non-scientists and are the basis for most climate change policy formulation. Yet these Summaries are prepared by a relatively small core writing team with the final drafts approved line-by-line

by government representatives. The great majority of IPCC contributors and reviewers, and the tens of thousands of other scientists who are qualified to comment on these matters, are not involved in the preparation of these documents. The summaries therefore cannot properly be represented as a consensus view among experts.

Contrary to the impression left by the IPCC Summary reports:

z Recent observations of phenomena such as glacial retreats, sea-level rise and the migration of temperature-sensitive species are not evidence for abnormal climate change, for none of these changes has been shown to lie outside the bounds of known natural variability.

z The average rate of warming of 0.1 to 0. 2 degrees Celsius per decade recorded by satellites during the late 20th century falls within known natural rates of warming and cooling over the last 10,000 years.

z Leading scientists, including some senior IPCC representatives, acknowledge that today’s computer models cannot predict climate. Consistent with this, and despite computer projections of temperature rises, there has been no net global warming since 1998. That the current temperature plateau follows a late 20th-century period of warming is consistent with the continuation today of natural multi-decadal or millennial climate cycling.

In stark contrast to the often repeated assertion that the science of climate change is “settled,” significant new peer-reviewed research has cast even more doubt on the hypothesis of dangerous human-caused global warming. But because IPCC working groups were generally instructed (see ipcc-wg1.ucar.edu/wg1/docs/wg1_timetable_2006-08-14.pdf) to consider work published only through May, 2005, these important findings are not included in their reports; i.e., the IPCC assessment reports are already materially outdated.

The UN climate conference in Bali has been planned to take the world along a path of severe CO2 restrictions, ignoring the lessons apparent from the failure of the Kyoto Protocol, the chaotic nature of the European CO2 trading market, and the ineffectiveness of other costly initiatives to curb greenhouse gas emissions. Balanced cost/benefit analyses provide no support for the introduction of global measures to cap and reduce energy consumption for the purpose of restricting CO2 emissions. Furthermore, it is irrational to apply the “precautionary principle” because many scientists recognize that both climatic coolings and warmings are realistic possibilities over the medium-term future.

The current UN focus on “fighting climate change,” as illustrated in the Nov. 27 UN Development Programme’s Human Development Report, is distracting governments from adapting to the threat of inevitable natural climate changes, whatever forms they may take. National and international planning for such changes is needed, with a focus on helping our most vulnerable citizens adapt to conditions that lie ahead. Attempts to prevent global climate change from occurring are ultimately futile, and constitute a tragic misallocation of resources that would be better spent on humanity’s real and pressing problems.

Yours faithfully,

If someone really wants to argue the issue of global warming, they should familiarize themselves with the material at the Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change internet site:

ipcc.ch/

special attention should be made to the working group reports at:

ipcc.ch/ipccreports/ar4-wg1.htm

All sides of the issue were examined in this massive effort. Individual readers should take various data from all of these people and carefully analyze the specific research about the items.

Do not accept anyone’s opinion. Evaluate the information you have been given in light of the Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change research to see what appears to be valid.

For months there has been a parade of retired engineers, who have done their own research, which they claim negates the hundreds, if not thousands, of person-years of scientific research supporting the position that there is a very good chance of global warming due to human activities.

All of these sidewalk superintendents do not even approach the credibility of the Panel’s massive effort.

One thing is very clear, however. It does not matter if we do anything to avert global warming. When things get very ugly, the population will arise and demand action. At that point business’s will be shut down and massive confiscatory ad valorem taxes will assessed on all assets of the wealthy to combat the problem.

In short the Greedheads will loose in the long run.

It has been determined that IPCC actually has grossly misrepresented its report.

The experts did not approve the IPCC report; IPCC, which is a committee of the United Nations, asked experts to review certain aspects of the report … each person was given a tiny part of the report to review. None of the reviewers reviewed the entire report. And some of the reviewers even took exception to the part of the report they were asked to review. It didn’t matter. IPCC went ahead and issue the full report and misrepresented the work of the reviewers.

Interested persons should read back through this thread to look at the comments … not made by “retired engineers” … but made by real climate experts such as Dr. Fred Singer and Dr. Roy Spencer and the large number of real climate experts who wrote the letter to the Secretary General of the U.N. protesting the IPCC report. Add to that list the people described in “The Deniers” (described back further in this thread).

I am not asking anyone to believe me but rather to review the writing of the critics of IPCC report.

Start with the references and links on this thread and then check the other links on other global warming threads. And then sign in to www.climatechangedebate.org which is owned by David Wojick.

One of the posters on this thread stated that Dr. Wojick is a “blogger”. The fact is that Dr. Wokick is ONE OF THE IPCC REVIEWERS.

NOT “just” a blogger.

This “retired engineer” merely reports what the real experts are saying. Let the IPCC provide a list of their experts.

Here is just a partial list of scientists who object to the United Nations’ Intergovernnental Panel on Climate Change IPCC report.

Please keep in mind that IPCC’s charge was to study ONLY man-made global warming … and NOT any natural source of global warming.

Anyway, if you all don’t want to believe me, that’s quite ok. Just believe these scientists:

Kathie, did you actually read that letter to the UN Secretary General by the 100 scientists, at least one of whom was one of the IPCC actual reviewers?

OK, I hereby challenge you:

Where do " the deniers continue to try and keep people from reading the IPCC and THE RESEARCH BEHIND IT."

Answer: nowhere.

Everyone is able to read that material.

And should do so.

However, the “deniers” contend that IPCC has grossly misrepresented the information.

Here is a second challenge:

Show where IPCC explained in detail the differences from one version of their report to another.

The refusal by the United Nations IPCC to release the names of the reviewers really means that the report has no credibility. It is an unsigned accusation.

What kind of “due process” is that?

An anonymous report …

This is pure “Darkness At Noon” / Koestler-ism.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darkness_at_Noon

Nebulous, changing, shifting accusations by an anonymous nameless bunch of people who/which demand a total remake of Western civilization and demanding they not be questioned or challenged.

That is pure 100% totalitarianism.

A friend of mine once said that a certain accusation “must be true because someone said it.”

What kind of “baloney” is that?

Scientists have an OBLIGATION to question everything. Especially scientists.

And when some scientists come up with significant objections to what they are investigating, then those objections need to be reviewed.

And those scientists went out on a limb and published a public letter to the United Nations detailing their objections and signed that letter. I posted the letter here.

AND other credible scientists …Singer, Spencer, Landsea, and a bunch of others, and writers such as Solomon who pulled together another bunch of scientists who also object … have also published objections … using their real names.

We MUST give those objectors a lot of credibility.

Why do the deniers continue to try and keep people from reading the IPCC and THE RESEARCH BEHIND IT.

It proves that there is reasonable, no actual, evidence that “global warming” data has been manipulated to the point where it is probably fraud.

Why would the “global warming” fanatics:
  • Call deniers equivalent to beople who belive the earth is flat (Al Gore)
  • Equate deniers to Holocaust deniers (multiple times)
  • Call for decertification of TV weathermen who do not agree with her global warming assessment (Dr. Heidi Cullen)
These are just a fraction of the threats and accusations coming form the fanatics. Yet, it seems OK for them, but when we call them on it, we are being hateful.

Putting up a list of people proves nothing.
It proves that there is reasonable, no actual, evidence that “global warming” data has been manipulated to the point where it is probably fraud.
No, it merely means out of tens of thousands of climatologists, you can always find a few dozen who won’t agree on almost anything. Getting a tiny minority to dissent, is not evidence of fraud.

(refers to those who accept the scientific consensus “fanatics”)
Call deniers equivalent to beople who belive the earth is flat (Al Gore)
Because they deny the evidence, as flat earthers do?
Equate deniers to Holocaust deniers (multiple times)
He did that? He’s hardly better than some deniers, then.
Call for decertification of TV weathermen who do not agree with her global warming assessment (Dr. Heidi Cullen)
And that would make her hardly better than the government bureaucrats who pressured scientists to change their findings that indicated warming.
These are just a fraction of the threats and accusations
Indeed. Congressional testimony has dozens of scientists reporting harassment and pressure to deny warming. It’s cost at least one denier his job, and if the FBI investigation can locate some deleted emails, might cost a number of other highly-placed bureaucrats their freedom.

Untrue. Neptune has the coldest atmosphere in the solar system, and also has the strongest winds.
Didn’t you read your own link?

While the cloud tops are the coldest in the solar system, the interior is very hot and there are both very warm and very cold areas at intermediate altitudes varying with latitude
It is the extreme differences that drive the winds.

I stand by what I said: A warmer atmosphere is by definition more energetic.

Perhaps you meant to say that temperature differences in the atmosphere drive stronger winds - rather than the average temperature of the atmosphere i.e. a “warmer atmosphere”. And therefore atmospheres with larger temperature differences are more energetic - as measured by wind speed.

In total, I think you’d agree that Venus’ atmosphere is warmer than Neptune’s atmosphere. But Neptune has stronger winds.

I thought that this report was interesting:

“The Arctic ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consul Ifft, at Bergen, Norway. Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers, he declared, all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone. Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met with as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes. Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm. Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared. Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts, which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds.”

OK.

You put your foot in it this time!

NAME THEM.

The tens of thousands and the dozens.

Name them.

Temperature and pressure differences drive winds.
But if you had a 10 degree difference in an atmosphere with an average temp of 100 degrees and a 10 degree temperature difference in an atmosphere with an average temp of 101 degrees the 101 degree atmosphere will be more energetic since temperature is a measure of internal energy.

As for Neptune and Venus, the temperature at the bottom of Neptune’s atmosphere is estimated to be about 10 times that of Venus’.

Compressive heating is very significant in a Gas Giant.
