Why do you say that? Apart from the clergy and religious going a bit off the beam trying to cope with all the V2 and societal change, the 60s and the 70s were a fantastic time to be a kid. Because of the baby boom, the culture was focused on kids and teens in a way it will likely never be again in our lifetimes.
It was not such a great time to be an adult, I donāt think. A lot of worries, including worries about how oneās kids would grow up in such a world. But if you were a kid it was the only world you ever knew and you just rolled with it. At least I did.

I liked the Walton parents, but since I couldnāt stand John-Boy and Mary Ellen, I never got much past the theme song.
Plus in the USA they had āSunshineā on against it, which was about a cute hippie guitarist who played John Denver songs. That was more my speed.

Yeah, I also never watched āThe Waltonsā yet because it was such a big cultural touchstone I feel as though Iāve seen it. āGood night, John Boyā etc. Iām not even sure what it was about - the ennui of small town life in the 1910ās? How you gonna keep 'em down on the farm, after theyāve seen Pa-ree? I imagine it was like āTwin Peaksā but without the Laura Palmer murder and the supernatural content.

It was supposed to be about a family trying to get by economically in the Appalachian Mountains during the Depression and WWII.
āThe Homecomingā, which was the pilot for the series that had Patricia Neal as the mom (I didnāt really like her in the role) had a lot more emphasis on how poor and broke the family was, along with almost all their neighbors. Also on the tension between the mom and her parents-in-law.
It was considerably darker than the TV series ended up being.
