Loving God,

Please bless, have mercy, and strengthen our friend Jim and his wife Elsa as he continues his journey of life and endures the challenges in his health. Please send your comforting and consoling Holy Spirit to be with them and grant them strong faith, courage, and continued hope in You, O Lord.

PRAYER FOR HEALING

Merciful God,
we remember before you all who are sick this day.
Give them courage to live with their disease.
Help them to face and overcome their fears.
Be with them when they are alone or rejected.
Comfort them when they are discouraged.
And touch them with your healing Spirit
that they may find and possess eternal life,
now and forever.

Well, brothers and sisters, I had treatment today and I’m slightly queasy. Medication helps that, though. I have basically no chance of avoiding an adult stem cell transplant, which will give me a new immune system (that of the stem cell donor). The purpose of this is to transplant a functioning immune system from the donor into my body, so that it can take over fighting the cancer in the place of my failed immune system. The process of the transplant involves being bombarded with radiation, killing my bone marrow. This wipes out my current immune system, which has failed for whatever reason. Without the immediate stem-cell transplant, I would be subject to massive infections from each and every bacteria and virus that I encountered.

Even after a “successful” transplant, I will have to take anti-rejection drugs for at least one year, since the new immune system will probably not immediately accept my body and will begin to attack it. This is no different from the rejection process involved in the transplantation of an organ such as a heart of kidney. Rejection problems often involve an attack on the recipient’s skin. The anti-rejection drugs are similar to obtaining immunotherapy (allergy) injections against allergies such as hay fever, allowing one’s immune system to be de-sensitized to whatever it is rejecting.

Right now, it is only the trial drug which is keeping my cancer suppressed, much like allergy medication keeps allergies down. The trick is to locate a stem-cell donor and then to live long enough to ensure that my secondary health insurance plan will cover the cost of the transplant (January 1, 2010). Stem cell transplants cost on average $380,000, with my current insurance covering about half of that. I am at the point of retirement, and it seems unlikely that anyone would loan such an amount. Additionally, I lose my health insurance when I retire, and must then live on 60% of my income. Oh, did I mention that, at this point, it appears unlikely that a suitable donor will be located anywhere in the world? So, the Lord is certainly testing my faith and trust in Him! However, the fact that I am alive to type this stands as testament to His goodness and mercy, so what should I fear?

So, you can see why your prayers sustain me, by calling the Lord’s graces down upon me. Again, I daily ask the Father to bless each and every one of you for your merciful prayers. Amen! Alleluia!

My dear friend, Jim. I may not be posting as often as i would like but you are inmy daily prayers. Such a special person…God surely passed wisdom your way along with the love you share with others…especially just by being here when we need you. You are a treasure, my friend. I offer my daily prayers with you at the top of my list. You are so special. Diane
