Well, I decided to take my OWN advice, and I called the Colo. Springs diocese.

Servants of the Holy Family have a valid Latin Mass 👍

They are NOT in schism or sede’s or any of the other RIDICULOUS statements that have gone on for, what? three years on this forum?

So - there you go! Mystery solved!

Did the Diocese mention if it was licit? If so, I am surprised. Fifteen years ago it wasn’t.

When did they reconcile with the Church?

oh, I am sure there are plenty of issues between the local bishop and SHF, but SHF has a letter (decree? well, basically a paper! lol) from the pope that allows Fr. Ward to be a private chapel.

Obviously when I called the diocese they tried to say “it wasn’t in communion with Rome” but I told them I was checking with Rome as well (which I did, waiting for a reply still) they were quick to change their story.

Yes, the mass is valid and anyone who goes to that mass has NOT splintered with Rome (which I already knew) and SHF have not splintered with Rome (which I also knew). YES, you can go there and be in full communion with Rome, it is a Roman Catholic church, however, you should be careful, etc. etc…

oh, so you just told me an outright lie before I said I was going to check my sources? hmmmmm - interesting.

So yes, if you have any further questions - I would ask SHF themselves (why they have problems with the local diocese/bishop and how exactly they have permission from the Pope to do what they do)

I just wanted to get, from the mouth of the “enemy” (for lack of a better word, lol) that the mass there is valid and they are NOT schismatic.

Personally - I already have all of my other questions answered (from more reliable sources than an online forum) and I refuse to debate further the permission they have from Rome themselves. (obviously it IS possible, because they HAVE it).

So yes, I would be very careful what I say about a community of Priests who are in Communion with Rome…

Good job Annie and like always I will see you on Sunday.

Someone better update their Wikipedia page. Someone also posted some adventures with their dealings in a situation like this on itsjustdave1988.blogspot.com/2006_03_01_archive.html

I, like Lomar, wouldn’t mind knowing when they came back into full communion with Rome because it’s obvious they weren’t a few years ago.

Wait a minute, not so fast. There is something wrong here. If they have a letter from Rome, why do they not have faculties from the diocese? Does the letter grant them faculties or is it a statement of praise? They are not the same thing.

Rome does not grant faculties, dioceses do. The question is still not answered. That the mass is valid was never a question, because they are validly ordained. Is the mass licit? That question has not been answered.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

You know what JR, why don’t you ask them. All of their contact info is on the website.

Since it is YOUR soul that may be at stake, one would think that you would be doing that.

If it were me and a group was suspect in any way, I would leave no stone unturned.

I’ve also sent them a message. We’ll see if they respond.
Good. This thread is the #3 Google result for “Servants of the Holy Family,” so we have a reasonable obligation to get it right.

“Thank you for your email regarding the website of Servants of the Holy Family. We are grateful for your interest in us and our apostolate. We appreciate knowing your ideas, comments and suggestions which we will use to improve our website and our apostolic work for you and others. We will keep you in our Masses and prayers and ask for your kind remembrance in yours. May God bless you and may our Blessed Mother protect and guide you always.”

I expect automated responses at least initially, but is it just me or does this have a bit of finality to it?

Somewhat, but I guess as an automated response you can’t really read that much into it.

  1. Go to mass there and ask the priests (I would suggest asking in a non-judgemental way) for yourself.
  2. Call the priests of SHF and ask them yourself.
(For those of you who don’t have an interest in SHF, refer to above, and stop gossiping about a group of PRIESTS…and you call yourselves Catholic 🤷)

I mean, really people? Are you going to get your answers from RANDOM and ANONYMOUS internet people?
Also, if you can, find out who is real bishop is. If his bishop is in communion with Rome and the priest is not suspended for anything, chances are he’s legit. There may be contracts involved with the chapel and stuff which are also good to know. But that doesn’t necessarily mean he has the faculties for hearing confessions; that only is granted by the local bishop.

OK, without getting off topic about who sends whom what message.

If I were at a parish where the bishop had made such a comment, I would want to know what the status of the priest is. The status of the religious community is not important. Religious communities do not come under the jurisdiction of bishops. They run themselves.

But a priest, even if he is in a religious community, must have faculties from the Diocesan bishop, not another bishop. This is canon law. This would be important to me, because the Church has said that the absolution is not valid.

The SSPX tried to argue that the Church supplies, because there is such a point in canon law. But John Paul II and Cardinal Ratzinger returned with , “Not for you.”

The pope does have the power to interpret when the law applies and when it does not. He can even change it, if he wants to do so.

These may be very good men and great preachers. They may have a great community spirit. But if I’m going to confession, I want to make sure that the Church guarrantees the absolution. If the Diocesan Bishop refuses to guarrantee it, then I’m not taking chances. I can go there for mass, but some other place for confession and weddings.

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

I have been going here from 1977 till now and these Priests have all of the faculties. We were here long before this bishop even came to Colorado Springs. He does not like our Latin Mass so He tries to make us look bad and refuses to give our children Confirmation. The Latin Mass is not something that He can deny us just like the freedom of speech for Americans.
Instead of worrying about some little church in Colorado that most of you will never attend, why not worry about your own church. The Catholic world is in a crisis, many have lost the faith and no longer believe in the real presence. Many bishops no longer believe in purgatory. Kids today learn about the 6 sacraments and yes I said 6. The one that they are leaving out is penance.
JR, how many of your Brothers were upset about the buddist statue placed on the alter in Assisi? If none then why not and what would Father Francis think about that.
You will not change my mind about Servants at all so find something new to gossip about.

The Tridentine Masses and the various liturgical services are very impressive at the Servants of the Holy Family (SHF), especially the Solemn High Masses. The sermons and talks are interesting; Father Ward spins a good yarn and can captivate an audience at times. At other times, he has been known to bore them into mild rebellion, resulting in several months of pouting and reclusive retreat. On another occasion, because of a letter sent by one of the congregation about repetitious and lengthy sermons, the SHF threatened to leave for New York. Notwithstanding the comments made by some of the unsuspecting new arrivals and the faithful, brainwashed apologists, if you really want to know the real scoop here, just follow the money and the law suites through the years. SHF is a business, and their business is to “Play Catholic Church,” as one Traditional Catholic Priest put it. For all their admonishments about those who don’t toe their line, their defiant attitude toward the local bishop and the pope are typical examples of their exempting themselves from obedience, as they hypocritically continue to pound their congregation with the “Don’t-tell-me-what-to-do” sermons. One must question a group, who allegedly took control of the finances of the original, elderly Carmelite nuns, then were thrown out because they were of no further use to the SHF. Just how Christ like is it to deny parents from attending their children’s weddings because of some previous, petty dispute? Just how Christ like is it to separate families and pit parent against children and other family members? Or, is it that misery likes company, since some of them are estranged from their families, who refuse to attend their services? Just how holy is it to look a gift horse in the mouth when visiting in Wisconsin and complaining about accommodations provided out of the kindness and good will of the local faithful? Just how holy is it to publicly target members in the congregation about their apparel, especially women, with comments such as, “Looking like they’re waiting for the next stagecoach?” Of course they are nice at first, and, as long as you keep contributing to their retirement fund and/or perennial refurbishments or expansions, they will continue to be nice. Just like any despotic or cult group, they want control of you, especially your pocketbook. Speaking of cult groups, if anyone would like a copy of the cult study that was conducted on the SHF, feel free to contact me at kg.mlm4U@gmail.com. Here are a few links for those who want to do some objective homework on the SHF, as well as Father Ward’s early beginnings in the SSPX. Meanwhile, follow the money and hold on to your wallet or purse, for gosh sakes.

Thank you. This confirms their status. Unless the situation has changed since 2004?

Does anyone know why the webpages from the Diocese of Colorado Springs on this group have disappeared?
