At times I too struggle with speaking to God. I’m reminded of what St Peter said, “Lord, depart from me for I am a sinful man.”

Then I am thankful that God has revealed to us the Angel’s, the Saints& & the poor souls in purgatory.

Just as you have asked us for advice, consider asking them. Especially St Mary, St Joseph, & your Gaurdian angel.

You may have left the Church, but God has not left you. He is always with you, especially through His Saints.

I second that. Through the intercession of the whole celestial court you may receive the renewed gift of faith. 🙏

Let your prayer be that of silence. The Lord knows your heart without the need for words or rituals or actions. Seek Him in that emptiness of heart and know He is there. For in that holy stillness is the peace of His Spirit. Let this holy silence be your meeting place, a monastery of the heart, a place where two lovers need no words. For the Lord does not abandon His beloved, but abides with them even in silence.

Hi, I cannot go to mass due to a physical disability (seizures). I would say contact a priest that is near in your area- that is what I am doing now.

I know your response was meant for the OP, but constantly being told ‘God/Jesus loves you’ doesn’t really help a person. Honestly, it just sounds like an empty platitude. At least, that’s what it sounds like to me…

Dark times are synonymous with a deep faith, as odd as that sounds. It means you are someone who is truly wrestling with it. So many saints talk about these periods, and how it is these times where we grow the most. Sometimes God “hides himself” because he knows that we grow so much in seeking Him. He also knows that constancy in the face of opposition and faithfulness in our actions has a deep impact on who we are. Think about a kid learning multiplication facts. He or she may not love doing the flash cards, but that repetition, even in the midst of sheer boredom and drudgery, shows a commitment.

People will often put down those who “go through the motions” without really meaning it…but for those who are in dry periods, their faith and prayer at that moment makes me think of the poor widow that threw in the two copper coins. The motions themselves may be all you can bring yourself to do…but you did just give your WHOLE SELF in prayer. ALL that you had to give. Jesus sees that. Just keep pressing in! These seasons don’t last forever. Sending you love!

You should go to Confession. The best times to go to Confession are when you least want to. The grace of that will help you.

All my words are empty of meaning. All words are empty of meaning. You give all words meaning yourself and what they specifically mean to you will be a reflection of you. A platitude is a word or phrase which through over use has become less powerful, even boring. I agree, but there is a reason why the kinds of phrases I used are used so often. It’s because that’s what we humans believe to be true. You are saying you are doubtful that they are true so that’s why they seem like empty platitudes to you.

So if like Thomas you need proof of the existence of God, then I’d assume that no account given by anyone in writing or on film would suffice to rekindle your belief. I don’t blame you for that. And if you’re in that frame of mind about things then presumably no stories in the bible would help either, so that’s out. That just leaves you to have your own experiences of God yourself then doesn’t it.

All I can say is, ask, through prayer communicate your desire for faith to God. If after that you notice nothing change then you have a choice, either to carry on with your religion or to seemingly abandon it.

Personally I have had some very odd experiences and I can tell you that at all least, all is not what it seems. My explanation for these things is that God is real, since He is who i have prayed to in addition to the Holy Mother. Perhaps your ‘journey’ is meant to be different, and that wouldn’t surprise me since we are to some extent unique in relation to each other.

As far as anger Is concerned, I was angry at God as well, sometimes I still am, I wasted my whole life waiting for Him, or so I thought, now I know He never left me. I try to remember that I’m not owed anything but I owe everything…to God.

Having said all that, please forget everything I’ve said, because God is guiding you I have no doubt. I wish you well and I hope God blesses you with the reward you deserve, great faith.

Some people really do need to hear that God loves them. Their own families don’t love them, or their loved ones have died, or they feel bad about themselves due to self-esteem issues or having made bad life decisions. What sounds like a platitude to you may be deeply meaningful to somebody else. Also, Jesus DOES love you, regardless of how you react to that statement.

What would you like to hear someone say instead, that wouldn’t sound like a platitude to you?

Thanks for your response, I appreciate you taking the time to type it out. Long story short, I just don’t want to talk or pray to God for a while, as I still have a lot of anger towards him. I’ll still go to church, I’ll still go to confession, but I don’t want to talk to him.

This is a true story. I felt similarly at one point and I had an intuition to turn on the car radio as I was driving and there’s Cliff Richard (English famous Christian) singing “it’s so funny, that we don’t talk anymore” then “but I ain’t losing sleep…”

In general, I blame the enemy and mankind and myself for all the bad that happens, and give thanks to God for all the good. But time will heal.
God bless Mark.
