Sex tourism thriving in Bible Belt

By Verna Gates and Mickey Goodman Tue Apr 4, 9:10 AM ET

ATLANTA (Reuters) - In a sleazy hotel room, “Brittany,” then aged 16 and drugged into oblivion, waited for the men to arrive. Her pimps sent as many as 17 clients an evening through the door.

A “john” could even pre-book the pretty young blonde for $1,000 a night, sometimes flying in and then flying out from a nearby airport.

None of this happened in Bangkok or Costa Rica, places that have become synonymous with sex tourism and underage sex.

It took place in Atlanta, the buckle of the U.S. Bible Belt, where the world’s busiest passenger airport provides a cheaper, more convenient and safer underage sex destination for men seeking girls as young as 10.

“Men fly in, are met by pimps, have sex with a 14-year-old for lunch, and get home in time for dinner with the family,” said Sanford Jones, the chief juvenile judge of Fulton County, Georgia.

I really don’t think Atlanta qualifies as the buckle of the Bible Belt. I’d vote for Tennessee, or Nashville if you want to pin it on a city.

This is sick. The headline is for sensationalism though. What difference does it make if this happened in the Bible Belt? I think the headline is also sick, in addition to the article. If you read the article it names many other cities this happens in, so why the reference to the Bible Belt? What a sick world!

It is sick…I guess the headline grabs attention…but it happens in many cities…this was in the article:

The FBI has identified 14 U.S. cities as centers for the sexual exploitation of children. In addition to Atlanta, they are Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, St. Louis, Tampa, and Washington, D.C

Fitz, from reading your post it almost sounds as if the part you’re calling sick is the article’s mention of the Bible Belt, not the activity discussed.

I think Fitz is calling the prostitution “sick”, and only *then *complaining about the Bible Belt reference.

If Atlanta is the Buckle of the Bible Belt I am the Queen of England;)

Frankly, use of the phrase “Bible Belt” in this story is, from where I sit, designed to inflame, not to inform.

May God forgive these people for these sinful actions as described in the story. May the local and federal law enforcement agencies in the area be successful in shutting this abomination down.

Let’s not forget, this happened on the home turf of Cynthia McKinney – as far left a congress person as you can find.

“The Bible Belt” is conservative, not liberal. When people start electing representatives like Cynthia McKinney they are not in the Bible Belt any more.

I’m from Nashville, lived there until I was 33 and I agree.

Regarding the headline - headlines are designed to grab attention and sell papers/magazines - any correct information they provide is purely coincidental.

Why am I not surprised that something like this is going on in the “Bible Belt,” Dixie or whatever?

It hasn’t been going on in the “Bible Belt.” It’s been going on in an ultra liberal enclave in Georgia.

How convenient.

I forget…what color did prostitutin’, gamblin’ and boozin’ Nevada sway last time? Oh, that’s right, it went Red for Bush. 🙂

Sorry, but “conservative” politics does not a moral people make.

Sorry again, but the prostitutin’, and most of the gamblin’ and boozin’ in Nevada takes place in a highly liberal enclave.

I wrote my post before work and I wan’t clear enough. I really am sick of the liberal media trying to make out the Bible belt, the conservative Christian right as sickos.

I am disgusted by the sick article- all of it. It could happen anywhere, and I doubt that those involved are Christian!

Oh, puh-lease!

Do you mean Las Vegas? While most of the gambling and boozing go on there, prostitution is not legal in Clark County (where Las Vegas is located). It is legal in other counties, however.

I still say that conservative politics does not a moral people make.

But, please, go right on believing what you want.

I don’t know. Because you are filled with despite for people who differ with you politically?

Who said anything about “legal?”

Were you under the impression that prostitution is legal in Atlanta?

Walk down the street in Las Vegas. Pick up any one of those free “newspapers” that are everywhere. Dial the nuimber on your cell phone, and a limousine will arrive to take you to a brothel.

And is the converse your argument? Are you defending the premise of the article, that Atlanta is typical of the “Bible Belt?”

Despite? Why would I be filled with although (which is what despite means)?

Further, how do you know what my politics are? Assume much? Isn’t that a violation of the posting guidelines? I think it is: “It is never acceptable to assume or say you know what another person thinks or needs.”

I just find it ironic that in the deeply moral, Southern Baptist South that something like this will be going on. Unsurprising, too. Has nothing to do with politics.

Not interested. I don’t walk down streets in Vegas anyway, well not where those free papers are, anyway (I have family there). Second, Nevada is known for its lack of state laws prohibiting prostitution, so I was referring to Nevada as a whole where it is not unlawful (illegal is a sick bird).

Nope, just a part of the larger Confederacy, I mean the South.
