Let us remember that it is a tenent of faith in some quarters that the ruder and more insulting one is, the better those ignorant Red Staters will like one. http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon12.gif

But I think you will agree with me that if I needed to prove my point that his attitude is rooted in prejudice and bigotry, he just accomplished that for me – and much more succinctly than I could ever do it.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon10.gif
AMEN!!!

Pointing out irony is now rude.

Yet people who disagree with the agenda of a favored political party is “communist” and “socialist” and makes one "Unamerican.

Noted.

When will the double standards cease!

Since apparently, I’m the ignorant fool, enlighten me. What social progress (i.e., civil rights) has originated from the south? What techonological advancements have come from the south? What kind of economic activity is generated in the south? What kind of educational excellence is taking place in the south? I’m sorry, but I really don’t see it. Most of these things take place in the North and West.

But we’re going WAY off topic here. A simple statement of not being surprised leads to ganging up on someone. I should remember that unpopular opinions are not welcome.

Yep. It’s a fact in most cases, that the larger cities are bluer than the rest of the state and have a higher percentage of welfare recipients, higher drug abuse, etc.
vern humphrey:
I was rather intrigued by that emphasis on taxes.

Because if you take the famous Red and Blue map, and focus on Arkansas, you will see this Red state has islands of Blue.

And if you look at where we recieve huge amounts of taxpayer money, it’s in the Blue counties! Those are the poorest counties, with the highest number of welfare recipients, lowest productivity, highest drug abuse and so on.

Yes, what you said was rude and you should apologize. You lumped everyone who happens to live in the South as into a negative bucket of your making. The responsibility is yours to apologize.

:rotfl: I won’t go through your whole list, but you do realize that Martin Luther King, Jr. is from Atlanta, right?

Probably because of the fact that there are more people per square mile than out in the sticks. A bunch of fallen humans concentrated together tends to amplify the problems (the drugs, welfare, etc.). They also tend to amplify the amount of empathy one can feel for others…thus the “bluer” aspect.

Although I’ve not seen apologies offered or demanded for derogatory comments about other groups of people made by “conservatives,” I offer the following:

I apologize to those in the South who are not like what I described in my prior posts. For those who are like that, however, no apology can be offered.

The first stage of the Saturn V rocket which landed humans on the moon was built in New Orleans. The main fuel tank for the Shuttle is still built in New Orleans. CAPCOM is in Houston. Duh? Where do you think you get your oil and gas - off the coast of California? Educational excellence? Stephen Ambrose, University of New Orleans, T. Harry Williams, LSU but then you might not recognize these because they are historians.

My family has lived in Louisiana for over 250 years. My ancestors served in the Continental Army. They were on Andrew Jackson’s staff at Chalmette. They served in the Mexican American War and they served the South as well - rightfully so. They served in WWI, they served in WWII and I served during Viet Nam. I live in the United States of America not the Confederacy. I saw the Archbishop of New Orleans formally excommunicate racists in the 60s. Hey, we stupid red neck Catholics in New Orleans led the way in civil rights! I lived through the entire period. It is part and parcel of my being.

I have BAs in History and Anthropology and an MA in Anthropology. I guess that just makes me a big Bubba who simply can’t understand that Atlanta is neither conservative nor representative of the Bible Belt. And, hey, let’s talk about our experience as Catholics in the Bible Belt.

I pay my taxes and you benefit greatly from the oil and natural gas fields here in Louisiana. We take the environmental hit while you sit with oil and gas reserves off the coast of California. Give us a break>

I don’t know about empathy, but people in cities seem to have a tendency to believe that the government should provide.

I tend to agree with Thomas Jefferson…a Southerner, btw. 😃 Here are a few fantastic quotes from one of the fathers of our country:
I view great cities as pestilential to the morals, the health and the liberties of man.
The mobs of the great cities add just so much to the support of pure government as sores do to the strength of the human body. It is the manners and spirit of a people which preserve a republic in vigor. A degeneracy in these is a canker which soon eats to the heart of its laws and constitution.
My favorite, is this one…very prophetic:
I think our governments will remain virtuous for many centuries as long as they are chiefly agricultural; and this will be as long as there shall be vacant lands in any part of America. When they get piled upon one another in large cities as in Europe, they will become corrupt as in Europe.

Aside from the service for the Confederate Army (which I consider completely unjustifiable…to fight for the right to own slaves! :bigyikes: ), I salute you and your family history.

In my opinion, the Republican criticism of New Orleans and many of its residents after Katrina tends to indicate that many do not consider New Orleans a part of the “South” but some strange leftist, immoral aberration.

And don’t worry, Bush and his gang are trying to invalidate laws that allow states the right to regulate their own coastlines, so I’m sure that there will be plenty of offshore rigs here in California before 2008…unless something’s changed. Then again, considering the whole west coast went Blue, I’m sure some kind of…upcommence is on the way. Maybe San Francisco or Los Angeles will get the Katrina treatment after our next major quake. 😉

Only the NO politicians 😉 Just joking

Actually, a number of us think as NO as some kind of Democratic social experiment gone horribly wrong. But the sex tourism trade in New Orleans was very strong and is being revived as we speak.

No. Claiming that there is irony is rude.

The real irony is that your claim is rooted in your own preudice. You are projecting.

Amen to that statement! Especially when you look at how the following storm was handled in the Galveston area. From where I sit the failure of liberally run area like NO vs the effectiveness of non-liberal area like Galveston was very clear.
But the sex tourism trade in New Orleans was very strong and is being revived as we speak.
Sadly, this is true as well.

Making it about me, are we? I understand.
Evidently you don’t understand.

The poster made it about what you said – not about who you are. You made the mistake of accusing the poster of misusing the word “despite.” You offered no link, no dictionary definition to back up your accusation.

The poster, however, promptly posted a link to a dictionary definition which defeated your accusation.

Yet your response has been to further accuse the poster of an ad hominem comment against you – still with no evidence – instead of conceding that your original accusation was unfounded!

Um…this was said;

Then you quoted a sampling of what many posters had said, many of whom had nothing to say about your misuse of the word “dispite.” The comment in question --the comment you made – was in response to what someone said about your misuse of the word “despite.”

As I have pointed out in a previous post: what someone said about your misuse of the word “despite” was not about you. It was about what you said.

Nice try at equivocation though.

And no, I am not particularly fond of the South. Why? Because it is one of the most backwards parts of the country that, in my opinion, is the most hypocritical. Most of the Confederate states receive more in Federal services and funding than they pay in taxes. With the exception of Texas (which is VERY red…yet they are the exception…most strange…almost Twilight Zone-ish), almost all of the blue states, pay out more in Federal taxes than they receive back in services and funding. They say people should “stand up by their own bootstraps,” yet they’re the ones who are leeching off other parts of the country. No, I don’t like the South because of the way things have been working…they’re mooching off the rest of the country.
Wow! Sweeping generalization made in the absence of any evidence.

OK. “PROVE IT! PROVE IT!”

After posting a bevy of opinions – unsupported as usual – you then say that “we’re” off topic. I guess that means no one can respond to your bevy of opinions – unsupported as usual. And I love the Royal We. I had always wondered why you had seemed to be claiming special privileges. Now I know.

As for ganging up. Nice try at demonizing your opposition which is not against you, but against what you say. Demonizing your opposition is, by the way, against your opposition and not against what they say. Why can you do that and we cannot? Oh! Special privileges!

Here is a suggestion:

Try setting out a logical argument. Try providing support for your premises. Try choosing diction which is both accurate and courteous. See how very very far that gets you in a discussion.

But I must ask an obvious question. Is it discussion you want? Or something else? Please specify.

I find it interesting that an article titled “Sex tourism thriving in Bible Belt” should start a discussion that is about geography and politics, rather than the horrible, sinful exploitation of minors for sex that goes on in our own country.

I think that was inherent in the title of the article. Just looking at the title tells you geography is the key story here. If the writer wanted to talk about the horrible, sinful exploitation of minors for sex, the title would be something like “Minors exploited for sex.”
