I assumed that the geographic reference was to point out that sex trade in the Bible Belt was counterintuitive to what most people assumed. But, to me, I guess, the “story” is still that it exists at all.

Which is another way of saying the intended message was to emphsize geography over the real story, which is sexual exploitation.

I’m from the South. I lived in Nashville, TN until I was 33. From my experience I can say there is a large population segment whose members are self-righteous hypocrites. They are close minded and seem to prefer ignorance. And before anybody goes jumping to the defense of these convervatives, you might want to note that many or them are deeply anti-Catholic, so of which believe all the about the pope being the anti-christ. When I was growing up racism was a fact of life, something you saw everyday. For the above reasons I am very happy I left and wouldn’t live there again for all the tea in China.Yes, this is generalized somewhat, but that is about all you can do with over 3 decades of life experience. There are many good people there to be sure, and I hear things have changed a great deal in the 13-14 years I’ve been gone. I’m going back next month for a visit and am thinking of wearing my Catholic tee-shirt. That should elicit some comments (I converted at age 30, my family is Baptist and Pentecostal).

In addition to those contributions to civilization listed by Brotherhrolf, please accept this minor list from a Canadian who doesn’t know much:

The Blues
Bluegrass
Rock n Roll
Country music
William Faulkner
Sister Angelica and EWTN
Cajun cuisine
Tennessee Williams
John Grisham
The Houston Ballet
Oprah Winfrey
Richard Wright
Mark Twain
Truman Capote
Margaret Mitchell
Flannery OConnor

These are only the Southern folksI know about. And wodduino?

I just met with a customer who is (East) Indian, and grew up in Tennessee starting from a young age. I asked “what was that like?”, but all he said is “it wasn’t his cup of tea, but they have good whiskey.” 😃

I’m not thinking the Indian population was that large in TN during the 80s and 90s. A guy named Suvi may have had a rough time in school.

…and that’s why it is phrased the way it is, of course. The fact is that it is in area with a reputation for being hard-line on such things. Finding it there is more newsworthy than finding it in a city where it is openly acknowledged by the authorities that it is going on.

Mike,

It was Atlanta (Georgia, not Tennessee). Atlanta may be geographically in the “Bible Belt”, but it’s a big city, and it is not representative of the “Bible Belt”. As you can see from the list of 14 cities, this has more to do with what Jefferson called the “pestiliential” quality of “great cities”.

Yes - but it seems an image thing to me. If they accept they have a problem then that seems fair. If they go around saying how much better they are than other cities that have these problems, they are setting themselves up for a fall if it is going on there too.

I’m not saying that is the case with Atlanta, just making a general point. It’s like John Major and ‘back to basics’ - it wouldn’t have been half the scandal it was that all these politicans were having affairs, if they hadn’t been so forthright about the importance of the family and marriage in the first place.

Look, being from a place is not a reason for sweeping generalizations about an entire city or state. OK, so there are a few nice people there! Sheesh! That is what being prejudiced is all about. You can’t make these generalizations and you need to be reminded of that on this Catholic site. I don’t care if you think many in the South are anti Catholic, and I am sure there are just as many anti Catholic in the North. There is no good reason for coming out with sweeping generalizations. Look, we are all sinners and we all know that. I guess the whole world is full of hypocrites, except when we are following Christ perfectly. There is not need to single out any geographic area. :tsktsk:

Look, don’t encourage the anti South thinking. This is really sweeping generaliztions that are being said here. It is not more noteworthy that it is happening in Atlanta. That is a big city, and it is just as shameful there as it is in Chicago or Los Angeles or New York. The paper was being biased against the South.

I know; that’s exactly what I said. ‘More newsworthy’ is a statement of fact precisely because there are these stereotypes around. It doesn’t necessarily reflect my own opinion.

Hey, back off. I said very clearly that it was a generalization based on 33 years of residence. I can’t give you a day-to-day breakdown. And I’m not talking about the entire South, I’m talking about Nashville. And there are relatively few Catholics there and the mainstream “Bible” thumpers don’t like Catholics - and there are more of them in the South. These are my experiences over a long period of time. And I didn’t say there were a few good people, I said there were MANY good people. Also, no where did I say these attitudes were exclusive to the North - we aren’t talking about the North. There are bad people everywhere - no one said they were all in the South. But there are some bad things about the South and that’s what the discussion is about.

I think I’ll remember this whole episode when someone starts talking about California being the land of fruits and nuts or the “left coast” thing. What’s good for the goose…

Please apologize for your hurtful and false remarks about the South. There is no way you can possibly justify your remarks, which is what you are attempting to do. It doesn’t matter what errors you think others have made or may yet make. Please address your own error.

And that goes for others equally, not just LCMS.

Okay. We are the land of fruits (grapes, peaches, apricots, etc.) and nuts (almonds, esp.) and our coast is on the left side of the country, so I certainly don’t know what you are complaining about…don’t you like California’s farmers? 😉 😃

Reread the thread in its entirety before you make such demands! :tsktsk:

I’ve already apologized to those in the South who are not like what I’ve said but there can be no apology to those who are like I’ve said.

Then please share with us how calling anyone “backward” is charitible.

Once again, REREAD THE ENTIRE THREAD. :tsktsk:

Do I have to give you the link to the post where I apologized to those in the South who are not like what I’ve said? There can be no apology to those who are like what I have said. It may not be politically correct but it’s the truth. Maybe there’s some kind of double standard for political correctness…it’s okay to be politically incorrect to “liberal” causes but not to “conservative” ones? No, that can’t be it.

From the forum guidelines on posting:

**Terms of derision, derogatory remarks, baiting, and inflammatory statements are prohibited.

Avoid categorizing people by a term which could be considered derogatory (e.g., Nazi or neocon) unless they have embraced that title. In which case, you may qualify them with the term as long as you preface it with the word “avowed.” Posters are asked to use their best judgement when posting articles using such terms. Do not abbreviate terms.
