I really need some help advice, just someone to listen… just anything

I have been married for 9.5 years and have 2 children, 7 and 5.

Overall my marriage has been good in that H and I have a lot in common, same beliefs, interests, morals etc, however our love life is **** and has been most of the marriage. I would attribute most of this to me. I never treated H with the respect he deserved because I always felt that he never put me first (his job has always been #1) and therefore I just brushed our sex and love life aside. I would say the last 6 years has been completely loveless. I have hated every minute of it, but didn’t know how to change it. As the years passed he because more involved in work and I resented him. We were on a downward spiral. About a year an half ago, I asked H to see a therapist, but he said no, we didn’t needed it. What needed to happen was I needed to fix myself and not until I did that could things change.

About 5 mths ago, he finally decided that he would go on a marriage weekend retreat with me. A friend of mine went and said it was very helpful. 1 week before the retreat he decided that he had enough and moved out saying the marriage is over and we can never ever make it work. Said the dreaded words, I love you, but not in love with you. It crushed me. I was a complete mess, feeling totally shocked that he would just give up so quickly when we have been together for 16 years.

We still went on the retreat, however the timing couldn’t have been worse. I cried the entire weekend and instead of actively participating in the sessions, I was too busy crying and begging him to come home which was the worst thing I could have done.

After the weekend we continued to speak to the therapist who ran the retreat and she informed us that it would take a miracle to save this marriage and that there was nothing left because the lack of love/sex for so many years. I didn’t feel the therapist had the right to say that to us and so I stopped the sessions with her.

About 2 mths ago H came to me and said that he didn’t think it was fair to just run away from the marriage and that he had to put a real effort in. He continued to live away, but agreed to see a new therapist and started coming over every day mostly to see the children, but was really showing an effort.

During this time, I came across Michele’s book and read it a couple of days.

After reading the book, I started to implement some of the things and noticed a change. When H came over he seemed excited to see me, even hugged me a couple of times which is a huge accomplishment from where we were.

Last week, I was so frustrated that instead of accepting these baby steps H and I got into a huge fight because I felt that I wasn’t seeing enough improvement. I wanted him living back home. After our fight, he decided to move back to the spare room, but since he’s been back he is miserable and I am so angry with myself for 1. Telling him he was not putting in enough effort 2. Making him move back in. I feel all that hard work has gone down the drain. He is no longer excited to see me, haven’t received a hug yet, not even on Christmas… I am at a total loss and so sad.

He keeps telling me how sad he is that we are in this situation and is still willing to try, but is very very doubtful that things can change because he can’t imagine being intimate - its been so long. He said he has a lot of soul searching to do and needs to decide if staying in the marriage is the right thing just being content, or just end it and move on where he can find the love that he has needed for so long that he wasn’t getting from me.

I don’t think he wants the marriage to end because of the sadness he will feel being apart from the kids, but cannot imagine things getting any better EVER. I am not sure if he is really done with the marriage part of me thinks he really is done and is only trying to say hes tried

Recently I came across retrouvaille and thought why not, we have nothing to lose. I very badly want to save this marriage. We go on Jan 18. I feel like this is my last hope as I don’t know where else to turn.

have read many reviews about retrouvaille, but only one of them focused on saving a sexless, loveless marriage. Does anyone have any stories about how retruovaille can fix this? Can it? Is this really over?

I am sure others will come on and tell you more about Retrouvaille, but I just wanted to say that a marriage is NEVER over until both spouses give up and close their hearts. Go back to what you were doing before you insisted he return to the house. Call Michele if you need some help. She knows what she’s doing. And NEVER give up hope!

Retrouvaille is a weekend that addresses pretty much every aspect of the relationship. You didn’t stop intimacy for actual physical reasons, it stopped because your emotional relationship had gone down the drain. If you fix the source of the problem, then everything else will fall into place.

Just a word to the wise: make sure you finish out ALL the sessions. My hubby and I attended Retrouvaille a year ago and it was a last-ditch effort before we gave up. It turned our marriage around, and it will with yours too.

You and your family will be in my prayers. Good luck 🙂

It seems like both of you really want to stay in this marriage.

Pray for the grace that comes with the marriage sacrament, and the ability to cooperate with it.

Maybe you could meet in the evening to spend 10 minutes praying for the people in your lives.

I have read many great reviews on retrouvaille, however not a lot on saving a sexless marriage. Can a sexless marriage be saved? I am not giving up

Not unless both people agree to it. If one person does not desire sex and the other does, there will always be pain and tension.

Why are you convinced that your marriage will remain sexless? It is up to you to change that.

Go to the retrouvaille retreat. But also consider reading some of the NFP material about how to show affection during fertile times if you are trying to avoid. I realize that is not at all where you are, but the idea of ‘dating’ your spouse and showing small affection may help you. If you found the other suggestions you were following helpful, go back to them. You cannot make your husband do anything, but you can changeyour own behavior and reactions. I will be praying for you.

I would love to start dating, however he wants nothing to do with that right now. As mentioned he is trying but he’s trying because he feels he should not because he really wants too. Often I analyze this and think how can we move forward when he’s trying because he feels he had too as oppose to wanting too. I pray every day this nightmare will soon end.

We are definitely going to retrouvaille, however he mentioned if he didn’t find the weekend useful he wouldn’t do the follow up 😦

I don’t want it to remain sexless at all, however he has mentioned he just can’t imagine having sex with me as he does not see me in that way anymore. This is my biggest fear that its just been so long without it that he can’t see it ever happening again

He has probably had to close off that part of himself but hopefully this Retrouvaille weekend can reawaken it. As long as he is still trying, for whatever reason, there is hope.

There hasn’t been any infidelity, right?

The physical act of intercourse – sex – is only ONE part of the whole relationship. To base an entire marriage on this one area seems a bit unfair, but I did the same thing. We wasted nearly 20 years on hateful and hurtful attitudes and behaviors, mostly verbal abuse and neglect toward each other and, sadly, our three children, before God sent us a miracle called Retrouvaille. That was 21 years ago. It changed our lives so much so that we have dedicated ourselves to helping other couples since then by sharing our story during the Weekend and Post Weekend sessions. Today we enjoy the most OPEN, HONEST AND RESPECTFUL relationship we could ever have dreamed of! Sex still remains a very miniscule part of our relationship, but our intimacy continues to grow daily, and I’m satisfied with that because my H makes many decisions to love me and NOT act toward me as he once did. Retrouvaille was our LAST DITCH EFFORT, too. We thank God daily for the gift of Retrouvaille. My suggestion to you would be to read the testimonials on their website and judge for yourself, but I will tell you this for certain, only the two of you can make decisions to love and turn your relationship around with God’s amazing grace! I would NOT pass up the Jan. 18 program for anything…just get there and stay there, and as someone posted … attend the ENTIRE program. To not attend all the Post Sessions would be like buying a new car, driving it home and then never driving it again. Will be praying for you and keep us posted!

Has anyone experienced a sexless marriage that was resolvable ? Feeling so hopeless, but I am not giving up

So H came home tonight and he looked very upset. I asked him what was wrong he said that he’s so sad about everything. Yesterday we were together all day and i thought it wAs a good day. Well i guess not for him. He said That yesterday he had a lot if time to reflect and realized that he just can’t see this relationship working and it’s making him sad. He can not see us together in an intimate way at all.

Feeling so hopeless. Not sure what I should do. Will retrouvaille help with some of this hopeless on both our ends?

I’m so sorry that you are going through this. I was in a sexless marriage that has been resolved. I just wanted to post to give you hope. My situation is very different though but we had not had sex in over 3 years and before that, it had been very rare throughout the entirety of our marriage. We basically never had much of a sex life at all. Often months and years would pass. We have 3 kids and barely had sex more than was necessary to create them.

We were at the point of zero intimacy. What turned things around for us was to stop trying to fix it on our own. I mean, don’t get me wrong we had been to countless counselors but we were still trying with their “help” to do it on our own. We both came to the realization that we needed God to help us and we needed to allow Christ to change our hearts. Reconciliation was extremely helpful, especially for my husband. He also began seeing our Priest and a Nun regularly and now we both meet with our Priest together once a week and also see a Nun who is also a Psychologist, separately. It has been amazing to see the Holy Spirit work in our lives. Even our Priest is amazed. It’s definitely a journey and it doesn’t happen over night. We still have a ways to go but I have no doubt that we will make it. We no longer have a sexless marriage.

Thank you for replying. I really need hope right now. Both therapist said we won’t make it and those thoughts haunt me often. Well we are going on 6 years and similar to you we had little sex life prior. H feels very neglected from me. It was never my intent, however he is very hurt and broken. H is a Christian, however his beliefs are not that strong for him see a priest or nun for therapy and trying to find a therapist who is pro-marriage is almost impossible outside of the church. I pray constantly that retrouvaille can help.

Just the fact that the two of you are expressing your emotions is a sure sign that the relationship is important to each of you. I judge from your comments that these emotions aren’t full of rage and hate, and I believe that is also a very good thing. THIS IS THE BASIS FOR RETROUVAILLE – the sharing of open, honest and respectful feelings between spouses. Once each spouse understands how the other truly feels about certain situations, then constructive conversation can take place and may eventually lead to some sort of compromise or resolution for the benefit of the marriage relationship. RETROUVAILLE is ONLY about feelings and sharing them through positive, open and honest communication. We help couples learn how to move past the often endless and unresolved issues that hinder growth in their relationship. We ARE NOT COUNSELORS and will never ask what your particular problems are. We know at the root of it all, there is little or no respect and little or no positive communication between spouses. It is my belief that everyone can benefit from more open, honest and respectful communication. Retrouvaille helped us and I believe it can help you, too.

Emily, how wonderful that you have received some sound Christian advice! I’m curious…do the priest and nun know about Retrouvaille? Pope Benedict XVI in his papal address to representatives of Retrouvaille International on Sept. 26, 2008, said, “…your program offers the ‘hook’ so that they [hurting couples] may not be totally lost and may gradually climb over the cliff. I love to think of you as custodian of a bigger hope for the couples who have lost it.”

Marriage is a three-legged stool – two spouses and God. The stool cannot stand without all three!
