So I am back and one thing I can say is the program is wonderful and I recommend it for any married/seperaterd/divorced couple. You could see the transformtions of couples by sat night. Unfortunately for me my weekend did not have a positive transformations, however the complete opposite. My H can not get over the past. He told me that he has been planning his exit from for 5 Years. He told that he will be moving out again, getting his own place and getting a separation agreement.

So what on earth do I do now. I am really struggling.
I am still not willing to give up.

I am sad to hear that. 😦 Don’t give up! Will he still do the follow-up sessions or no?

Did I already give you this website? This psychologist has had wonderful results even with spouses who have cheated and left. She really understands what helps and doesn’t help keep marriages together. Read her website and try her suggestions. Her approach is secular but it works.

Divorce Busting

He is not sure if he will attend the possessions. I will definitely be going even if its by myself.

I have actually read her book divorce remedy and I found it amazing. I have asked my spouse to read it, but he refuses. I might even see if I can get a session with Michele from divorce busting. I know it will be expensive but I am determined to save my arrange.

He doesn’t have to read it. You can do this by yourself, with her book and/or her guidance. It’s never a guarantee, but she’s done a lot of good in the world so far.

👍

I tried to go in without expectations, however I was really hoping for a positive outcome. I am just devastated. He has been planning his exit for 5 years so this is no big deal to him however I have only had 5 mths on this crazy emotional roller coaster. Just sad and lonely.

That IS horrible to hear. I will keep you in my prayers, try not to give up hope yet. 😦

I am saddened to hear that your Retrouvaille Weekend did not produce positive results for you. THE MIRACLE does not always happen during the Weekend, for some it happens during the Post Weekend sessions or for some even later than that. There are SO MANY areas of relationships to address that there is only time on the Weekend to address HALF of them…you still have 12 more areas of relationships to explore! For instance, one of the sessions deals with conflict management. My husband desperately wanted to “get the post sessions over with” so he could check it off his “to do” list. But it was the BEST session for him…he gained so much insight into why we could not resolve issues in our relationship. The session on trust was the one that hit home with me, but had I given up and decided to NOT attend the Post Weekend Sessions, I might never have moved past the pain and hurt to experience forgiveness and reconciliation. I know you said you will attend these sessions, and that is admirable of you, but you really need to stress to your husband how important it is for him to attend the ENTIRE program. Only by doing so can he truly live up to the commitment he made to do everything possible to save the marriage…his words!

Besides, many people made many sacrifices and offered up prayers for you this weekend…stranges around the globe lifted you up in prayer!! Draw on our strength and the strength of those on this thread…be strong for yourself, for your children and for your marriage. God EMPOWERS you with the strength and grace you need. He’s cheering for you, too!

I’m so sorry for you in fact got a tear in my eye. God bless and chin up. You may be happier in the long run who knows what God has in store for you a big adventure I bet.

If you wish to follow the Catholic faith, you must remain married. Sorry about this, otherwise, it will be adultery if you do your life again with another man.

Have you consider to consider a priest, they are far more open mind then you can imagine.

I pray for your marriage and for both of you to be happy as a family.

Amen!

I just got back from yoga and I had I think a revelation. I am by no means a therapist, but this weekend H told me that in high school he was rejected by every Girl. He never had a girl friend and would cry himself to sleep. This made me feel so sad to hear. at yoga today I wondered if this terrible rejection he felt in high school is contributing to the rejection he has felt from me and that is why he is having such a difficult time getting through some of this and why the rejection he feels is running so deep. How could someone that loves you reject you?

I also realized at yoga today that I am not to blame for all this. I have taken the blame for everything even this weekend in hopes he would come back. This blame is eating alive and it needs to stop.
H goes to see a therapist in wednesday. Hopefully he got something out of the weekend he can discuss with him.

I am pleased you are beginning to think “outside the box” rather than within the confines of that which has become your marriage relationship, starting to see things in a new light

However, I would highly caution you to **not **reveal to others details of what he shared with you in confidence during the Retrouvaille program. It might be prudent to think more clearly about your own soul-searching and leave that of your husband’s in God’s capable hands.

Sharing your feelings here, with us, is what is most important, in my opinion. Your feelings are truly your own, they are real and they are valuable and worthy of sharing if you so choose. Besides, it has been my experience that in the breakdown of any relationship, there is enough blame to go around. Ponder the words in scripture (I Corinthians 13) where we read that love does not keep track of wrongdoings but rather rejoices in the truth.

AM2012,
I am sorry too that the weekend did not produce the desired results. Meditating on the story of Joseph being sold by his own brothers into slavery really helped me to start to find answers to how a loving God could allow such evil to take place. Joseph reaized that what his brothers meant for bad, God used for good. This can also become a realty for the abandoned spouse… if he/she remains faithful to his/her Heavenly Spouse. As another poster reminded us, we cannot remain faithful to our Heavenly Spouse without remaining faithful to our earthly spouse.

I encourage you again, if you haven’t already, to spend the $8 and the time to read The Gift of Self. It can be found on the Mary’s Advocates website.

You and your husband remain in my prayers.
Bryan
LOVE SO AMAZING

The kids WILL be hurt. If that is what keeps him in your home, then GOOD. Because he has to know that divorce screws up kids FOREVER. Forever is a long, long time. He may feel discouraged right now, but he should be working to forgive you and make a new type of relationship.
Sorry, I wanted to read through all of the comments before responding, but I wanted to join the chorus on this one. DIVORCE HURTS CHILDREN NOW AND FOREVER. Do not entertain this as an option even if your husband does. Do not escalate and do whatever you can to save your marriage.

Full disclosure - you have a lot of work to do to rebuild the foundation of your marriage (my views on the withholding of intimacy in marriage are well-documented). That being said - please, please do not divorce your husband. As the woman in the relationship you hold all the high cards regarding the civil process - please do not play them if only for your children’s sake.

I promise you - divorce is horrible for all involved.

AM_2012,

Please hang in there. I suspect that there is a very good possibility that your husband will find that divorce is not the answer.

Get your priest involved ASAP.

Divorce is the last thing I want , however I feel I don’t have control over the situation. He wants nothing to do with me and even those times he says he trying he had shown little effort. I don’t know if he’s having an affair, depression or mid life crisis. He’s out again tonight drinking with his friends. Doesn’t even have the courdisty to call the girls to say god night. This is something he does weekly for the last 2 years. I can’t emotionally take this anymore. I ave been blaming myself for the demise of the marriage and its not all my fault. I have to move on and hope that God touches him in someway. But till then it’s time for me to move on with my life.

My h is not active in the church at all and does not plan on being a part of it anytime soon. I could see a priest for sure , but would not Work for my h

Hello AM. Greetings from Denver Colorado.
I can’t tell you how much I feel for you. I am in the same exact situation except we have been married for 4 years, together for 10 and no kids.
I am reading your posts and can come up with just one conclusion- God must have pointed me to this website bc our stories are too similar. My husband also blames me for everything, 80/20 on a good day, we are not intimate either and havent been for a long time, he also says I need to fix myself for anything to change and I am also considering Retroville. He threatens w divorce every six months but when push comes to shove and I ask him what he wants to do, he tells me the same thing “I don’t know”. Similarly to you, my husband managed to train me into believing I am at fault for everything and so I continue in this “what else can I do to save my martiage’ emotional roller coaster while he has not said a word to me for a week. I initiated Counselling, he went a few times and then stopped bc I am not fixing myself and he cannot help me. the counselor kept telling us to get a divorce while I wanted to talk about our issues. As a last resort, I went to a priest just recently and thought they were going to try as much as me to help save it. I even gathered facts describing my husbands behavior and was hoping for the priest to offer to have a man to man conversation while he simply tells him " listen such and such behavior is unacceptable, let me know what your plan is to correct it and I will keep checking in the progress”. That didn’t happen. The priest offers to talk to us both but since he is not speaking to me, I can’t even give him the dated the priest offered gor a meeting.
What makes this whole situation even worse is that I don’t have any family in the us I had come here on a scholarship years ago but never intended to stay. I stayed bc by the time I was done with my masters, I already knew my now husband and had started my career. So for instance tonight, I am laying in bed sad and lonely while he is hanging out with his family. And none of them sees anything wrong with this picture. Why would they care about me since he keeps feeding them lies its ally fault. I can’t believe it bc he is such a devote catholic, goes to church every week or daily sometimes. He goes to mass and comes back home and continues to treat his wife like ****.

Could you tell me more about Retroville?
Which Michelle’s book did you read? She has a few.
How are things for you right now? Praying for you!

First I want to say I am very sorry for you and this difficult cross you carry. God is near to those whose hearts are breaking.

I don’t know you and i could be wrong. My impression on reading your first post was that you are a person who takes on a load of blame easily, and there is a good chance that blame is misplaced. If your husband is a person of ill will, he could manipulate your eagerness to take the blame so easily. Then I read more and get the impression he has taken advantage of that. He sounds insincere.

How I can say this is because I also saw only the good in my ex-husband (of twenty years). I was always willing to take the blame and to be the chameleon, changing any and everything if it would only save my marraige. I lived my life trying to save my marraige alone. I constantly tried to improve, always analyzing what I should improve next. I never wanted to blame him for anything. A fault I had was sticking stubbornly to something my mother said when I was young, that God does not want us to keep a record of wrongs. So I would make myself “forget” all his wrongs, and only focus on my wrongs. It would have been wiser to remember. It would have been facing reality.

Later when it fell apart beyond my control, a wise, holy, pious priest said I had been trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. So true. I also had been fiercely trusting and waiting for God to do the miracle of healing our marriage, but the priest said though God does miracles, He never tells us to expect one.

As to the sow’s ear comment by my priest, Michele says nothing like this. I think she is caught up in her optimism-world and ignoring the reality that not all marriages can be saved. Its a fantasy we all have – the most popular magazine column of all time is Lady’s Home Journal, “Can this Marriage Be Saved?”. In one page each month a terrible impossible marraige becomes great. Yes, its the success-only stories from various counselors files – they are not all saved! We don’t get to hear how many are saved. 1%? 10%? 30%? Who knows. If you follow the column, it sure seems 100%!

I feel Michele takes advantage of people the same why the diet industry takes advantage of people who want to get thin. She is too committed to selling her persona as a high-priced marriage-saver and not committed to truth. She uses testimony to claim she knows the way. But just as some people will lose weight on ANY diet and some children will learn to read on ANY reading plan, some peoples bad marriages will be saved with ANY marriage-saving strategy. Since she ignores the giant reality of marriages that cannot be saved, I feel she is presenting only the side that suits her image (and bank account).

I am wary of Michele because she advocates ignoring your husband’s cheating. That’s just not right. A better saner perspective can be found in Christian author James Dobson’s Love Must Be Tough.

By the way, at the end I was pushing earnestly for a Retrouvaille weekend. He refused. But the Retrouvaille people did let me know that not all marriages can be saved. Both have to want it. One person cannot save a marraige alone.

Well, I get the feeling your husband is not sincere. I might be wrong. Its just having had an insincere husband, I have a nose for it now.

Good news is you draw close to Jesus in the tough times. In the end you feel gratitude for whatever hard times brought you closer to Our Lord. I wouldn’t trade them. More good news is that Jesus heals broken hearts. He healed mine. He made mine like new. Praise Him forever!

Thank you for your (name removed by moderator)ut and hello.
I struggle bc I feel like him and I could be do happy and we are not for some reason. We are only 33 and 34years old and have same values etc. I can’t understand why it’s not working out.
I don’t get it bc I don’t expect the lalaland. I just want to be happy together.
I don’t want to be divorced and I am constantly fighting to stay in it but it has become close to unbearable.

I disagree about Michele’s focus. She does not say to ignore infidelity. She wants to heal marriages but you have to stay together to get through the pain and to heal. She’s Jewish, not Catholic, and her approach is mainly secular so she can help the greatest number of people.

But that’s OK, everyone has different tools, and everyone is free to decide which tool can help them.
