I feel odd posting in this thread as I am a 23 year old man, but here goes…

I purchased my first piece of cast iron (not enamel) cookware this summer- a skillet to take on camping excursions with me. I have to say this thing is AWESOME. I have been using it over the campfire and on the stove top. I want to get a kitchen full of cast iron cookware if I ever find gainful employment again!

This is turning into a cast iron appreciation thread!

Get stainless at a restaurant supply store (even the rest supply area of Sams Club). I like mine.

Now, when DS decides to cook eggs in them, that is a clean up mess.

Do you have gas or electric cooktop? That makes a big difference too.

Aw, don’t be! Anyone is welcome. My husband loves to cook, so men are welcome too.🙂

LOL, right?
How great! Question for you…is clean up a pain with regular cast iron? What do you make when you’re camping? I’m intrigued…I haven’t been camping in a loooong time. :o

We have electric, I miss gas!

*Oops, wrong link ladies. THIS is what my dh bought me…close, but not the french oven. Iknew something was off…it’s a cast iron/enamel casserole dish. *

They are having a nice sale on these, kage, at JC Penney. Truthfully…I buy most of our cookware and so forth there…I really like their selection, and sales. 🙂
Well, they could be selling it for $5, it would be out of MY price range these days. (Heck, we have been without electricity now for over a week - :o)

I can dream, and maybe someday…

*I might have to start believing in Santa again, for if he is reading this…lol I would really love a breadmaker. I used to make homemade breads when I was a SAHM…and miss those days. 😦

Anyone have a good brand for breadmakers? I don’t think dh has this on our wish list right now, but maybe he could be persuaded if I found a good price on one. *

Kage! I’m sorry.😦 I remember reading you mentioning that. Hang in there…God’s always got a good plan, we know this to be true.

Zojirushi - the bread divas I know swear by it. It makes “regular sized” loaves too!

It is pricey, but, will last and do a great job.

We use Wearever stainless steel pots and pans and clean up is very easy.

Our stainless steel skillet is another thing, though.

Honestly, clean up isn’t bad at all! I would rather clean a well-seasoned piece of cast iron than stainless steel any day. I mean, it can be difficult to cook over a campfire because the heat is so uneven, but that is the magic of cast iron! It evenly distributes the heat so (if you know how to build a decent cooking fire) it is pretty easy to cook with. Nevertheless, I have burnt the heck out of food over the campfire before- but I have never had any issues with cleaning the skillet. One thing to consider is that you aren’t supposed to use soap when clean plain old cast iron because it is so porous. I follow this rule to a certain extent. If my dish rag has soap on it I just go ahead and use it, but I don’t submerge the skillet in soapy water.

As far as camp food goes… it depends. The food I take while backpacking is VERY different than what I take on traditional camping trips. When backpacking I only take my nesting cookware (made of junky aluminum) because it is so light. This stuff is a nightmare to cook on for the most part. I also try to take food with me that has a low moisture content- watery food products are heavier.

Anyway, back to your question- when I am camping I ALWAYS take mountain pie provisions and my (go figure) CAST IRON mountain pie iron (you’re from Pa so I will assume you know what that is)! I mostly make pizza mountain pies but I also like peanut butter and marshmallow/ banana. On my skillet I cook things like potatoes with onions/ green peppers, wild game like venison with peppers/ onions, refried beans to make tacos, grilled cheese, eggs, and vegetarian faux meat products like tofu dogs and burgers (the only meat I eat is that which I kill myself). I also have an enamel coffee pot that I took all of the inner workings out of. I use to this boil water for drinking, boiling noodles, soup etc. It is really handy.

*yes, kage that’s it…! I looked it up just now…he bought it at JCP, for my bday. He picked the color out…I just love it. This thing looks so durable that it could withstand a tank running it over! 😃 I really was pleasantly surprised with this tonight! *

*Here’s the link (it is labeled as a casserole dish on the box though) *

In the future I would check HomeGoods if you have one in the area. The don’t always have Le Creuset in stock but when they do they are considerably cheaper. They also carry Calphalon and other higher end cookware.

This is a bit off, but I love my Homer Laughlin Fiesta disk pitcher. It is in constant use as I use it for ice tea - 2 large cold brew bags and a pitcher full of cold water makes perfect ice tea. I bought mine at the pottery outlet and did buy one for a gift at Macys. Fiesta ware is great - assortment of dishes, bakeware, etc - many beautiful colors and so durable. Homer Laughlins has a great website with the Fiesta line feautured. fiestafactorydirect.com/

My girlfriend’s mom has a lot of Fiesta Ware, it’s great!

Is anyone a fan of silicone bakeware? One of my former room mates/ one of thier significant others stole a pyrex bread pan I used to have. To replace it I bought a kitchenaid silicone bread pan, that thing is so nice! My next silicone purchase will be a muffin pan!

when I was still cooking for a family (on a gas range) I preferred cast iron skillets, plus a dutch oven, to anything else. indestructible even with kids. don’t work so well on a glass cooktop or on electric. we took them camping for family & scouts, the huge skillet, the deep chicken fryer, 2 smaller skillets, and a dutch oven. Bought them for my hope chest when I worked at the catalog store, used them for 30 years until kids got married, DS still uses the same set for girl scouts.

I kept my cast iron omelet pan, it has never been used for anything other than eggs, has never seen soap or detergent, and is perfect in every way.

Pans I use most often (and the only ones I have, got rid of anything I don’t use)
wok, in that black steel set they have at Target, the nice ones (Cephalon?) 10 inch non-stick teflon skillet, 3 quart Cephalon saucepan, 5 quart stock pot stainless with 3 layer thick copper bottom, my omelet pan, and another small skillet for gravy etc.

*This sounds like quite an adventure! lol I don’t know mountain pie. Is it like shepherd’s pie? I have made that.

I have heard the same things about cleaning stainless steel…it just looks like it would be tough to clean. Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut! :)*

Thank you for this link, I think I could be busy for hours looking at it. I love the ornaments too. 🙂 I love the colors, really nice.

*I don’t know if anyone has this or not…but what about Princess House stuff? I LOVE this line. A friend of mine back in PA had a friend who would throw PH parties all the time, and I have bought such great things…measuring cups and casserole dishes, but they are pretty also. So, when you put them out for company, they ‘‘look’’ a little more elegant than a simple casserole dish. They are so durable though…they also make more delicate items, I bought a few brandy glasses (not sure if that’s their official name), but the kids dropped a few on the floor when they were younger. :o

I highly recommend that line…

And…how about Pampered Chef? I have not been ‘wow-ed’ with this line. I bought a few things, they were …eh…I wouldn’t buy anything from them again. Nothing horrible about the line, just not wow.*

HERE is a mountain pie iron, and HERE is a picture of a mountain pie iron filled with stuff. You basically put two slices of bread in the iron, one on each side. Then you load the bread up with whatever you want inside the “pie”. You then close the iron and put it in the hot coals of a campfire to cook. They are delicious!

Princess House and Pampered Chef are pretty much for the soccer mom crowd, not MY cup of tea (I bougth my last bit of Princess House when I was 20). Pampered Chef underwhelms me.
