In the not so distant past, when New York museums displayed a pornographic picture of a woman that was smeared with elephant excrement and titled 'The Mother of God", and a crucifix in jars of human urine, we were told that such artistic expressions are vital in a free society. Catholics did not kill anyone over these 'vital expressions of artistic voice", nor over any of these:

1 - Naples, FL - the exhibt ā€˜Confrontational Clay’ included a piece that featured a toilet, topped by a statue of the Sacred Heart wearing a Mickey Mouse hat.

2 - New York, NY — The play ā€œThe Pope and the Witchā€ at the Theatre for the New City in New York’s East Village. Newsday described the play as involving ā€œa heroin-addicted, paranoid Pope called John Paul II.

3 - Baltimore, MD - an exhibit titled ā€˜Profanity Pop’, where artist JosĆ© Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros reworked Disney characters, such as a Virgin Mary Daisy Duck looking distressed at a pregnancy test, and Pope Francis conducting a wedding for two Disney princes. Ontiveros described his collection as a ā€˜celebration of creative freedom in our time.’ Cosmopolitan Magazine said the images ā€˜just feel right’. Huffington Post writer Priscilla Frank described the collection as ā€˜Wonderful’. Makes one wonder how they’d describe Disney characters mocking Islam.

Point being, we are a society that values freedom of expression, or we are not. Yes, the motivations on both sides are wrong. People should not degrade the beliefs of others, but that boat sailed a long time ago.

The question before us now is how do we respond to Islamic aggression? Islam means ā€˜submission’, and Islam will not tolerate our values. If history teaches us anything about how Islam operates, one only has to look at what they did to the Eastern Church. The parallels are not hard to identify.

How is painting a nice picture of Mohammed ā€œhateā€? We are subjected to Islamic law now?

I say no… I say Mohammed was a real man, and the history books deserve an image of him just like anyone else. We have pictures of Genghis Khan and many other warrior leaders. Mohamed is no different to us as far as real life is concerned.

…Mohammed was not a prophet.
You may not see a problem with this but the Holy Father has spoken on purposeful efforts to denigrate the faiths of others.

It would seem that non-Catholics don’t listen to what His All Holiness has to say on the matter.

And what I’m curious about is who decides what is offensive??

I am sure, in fact, I think I have seen religious jokes and we just laugh at ourselves.

There are a number of anti-Christian movies out there and art as well, I wonder if the Southern Poverty Law Center issues condemnations of these?

Salon, the website published a revolting article last week, that’s not the first time they’ve essentially been ā€œanti-Christianā€, one wonders where the criticism is for this? And there are many other cases.

If I were to paint a picture of Mohammed, within the privacy of my own home, would I be denigrating the faiths of others?

…Also, how many Muslims were invited to the contest? 🤷

Not to me but how about these archaeological statues that ISIS has destroyed, do they somehow have this right as apparently they feel it is against their religion or offends them??

This is where this becomes a slippery slope.

Also, in this sense, I can see why some people are saying that this in a way is like a Sharia law.

Nonetheless, I do feel we should be respectful of all religions.

But one of the first incidences of this offending people was when a Danish cartoonist made an editorial cartoon maybe as long ago as 20 years ago. In that vein, I’m not sure that was wrong to do just like, all things being equal, cartoons of political figures or some religious figures does not appear to be egregious.

What has the Holy Father said about efforts to specifically denigrate religious groups?

This Pro-America Freedom Defense front Initiative of Freedom is simply a hate group.
Who was more wrong, in your opinion, the group that organized the show or the men who planned to kill them?

Peace

Tim

What I feel that the creators, organizers and
participants of these events fail to understand is that the mocking of any faith is to diminish all faiths and once that work is complete what else will be torn down?

If I stand back and look at what’s being done (not just to whom) I start to see what will become a pattern of taking what is meaningful to people and identifiable with organized groups of people and systematically destroying collective identities in the belief that by getting rid of what binds us together we will no longer be a threat to one another. What is hoped is at the end of this scheme the only things human beings will be allowed to claim is ethnicity and language but nothing else that could unite a group under a shared identity.

I am thinking of the lyrics of ā€˜Imagine’. If you look at what Lennon’s dream version of humanity consist of, it is a humanity of disconnected individuals with nothing to join them together but the shared emotion of ā€œloveā€. No religion, conflict, governmental, national, etc. identity. If Lennon had lived today he might thrown in, ā€œno gender to define us-no him and her just you and Iā€.

Some people are so afraid of being offended, feeling pain, having to wrestle with the question of right and wrong and ultimately having to stand up for what they have a right to believe that they would rather we all be forced to live in a sterile world where nothing is sacred, no one is allowed to speak in ways that might offend and the search for truth is boiled down to the idea that there should be no differences in anyone. Nothing that ā€œthreatensā€ in any way.

If this is accomplished and this neutralized humanity is achieved what would be the point of being human? We shouldn’t just live to war with one another or to hate for it’s own sake but living to just be passive and docile will result in a species devoid of feelings including the ā€œloveā€ that Lennon was so fond of upholding as the bedrock of his sought after utopia. Utopia is not something we achieve in life on earth and no matter what we do to manipulate humanity we will never achieve universal, collective perfection.

ā€œImagineā€

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today…

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

But for a lot of the Extremists, let’s not forget that merely a portrait of Mohamed is offensive; so even if one did a respectful depiction of him, that is still wrong to a number of persons.

Well, his Holiness has a problem because to many folks-- support for any other religion or viewpoint is ā€˜hate speech’ against Islam.

Their goal is for all of us to sit down, shut up, and convert.

Saying I am a Christian and reject Islam is ā€˜hate speech’.

In my view, it is unnecessarily provocative to organise an event of this nature, for the sole purpose of proving some kind of dubious point.

I see Ms Geller was refused entry to the UK, as her organisation is classified as a hate group here, under our laws.
The dubious point that people shouldn’t be shot for drawing a caricature of Mohammed? I’m not sure I’d agree with your characterization. Would you similarly defend a Catholic for shooting someone who drew an unflattering caricature of the Blessed Mother? It is funny that a group that has no known record of violence or even advocating violence is labeled a ā€œhate groupā€.

Yeah, interesting that Christians can be fined $135K for refusing to sell their services to celebrate a ceremony that violates their religious beliefs. And in fact the Christian baker or florist is labeled hateful for doing so…

But Muslims are justified in shooting and killing folks who simply make statements or create drawings that challeng their religious beliefs. Kind of like saying the girl had it coming for wearing a short skirt.

Interesting and fairly twisted logic there.

Here’s an idea-- adults shouldn’t physically attack each other over words or images. Regardless of what the words or ideas are. That the appropriate and only acceptable response and antidote to hateful or wrong speech-- is more and better speech.

Hateful speech will very rapidly be defined by the persons wielding the guns and willing to use them- and it will be pretty much any criticism of any kind.

It isn’t diminishing all faiths. All faiths are not connected to each other. False religions are not equal with true religion and we are not morally obliged to treat them as if they were.

That may be the goal of socialists and ā€œglobal elitesā€ who promote world government, but that isn’t the goal of goofy cartoonists.

That song expresses the dreary, materialistic world-view of socialism.

Every year the Iranian newspaper Hamshahri holds a Holocaust Cartoon Contest to challenge Western accounts of the Holocaust.

It doesn’t get much press, because the Jews don’t shoot it up.
