In my post above I forgot to mention that according to the information that I have, the “weapons” carried by the soldiers guarding the War Memorial were non-functional display items. Putting a trained soldier out in public with a non-functional weapon – is that really a good idea?

Well, in the late/90s early 2000s the Navy had several gate-guards/pier sentries mugged for their side-arms. Again, the Navy was so afraid of negligent discharges that the weapons were ‘just for show’ and weren’t carried loaded. That was changed even prior to 9/11 as the Navy began to take security more seriously.

I agree, the euphemisms we use only serve to protect these corruptive ideologies. What even is “extremism”? I’d prefer to call all terrorists “Islamic Militants” from now on -just as some media sources have identified this as.

Islamists is the word that I have settled on. It is not just the militants, but the ideology fueling the militants that must be opposed.

The gunman’s mother, Susan Bibeau, spoke to The Associated Press by phone. She struggled to hold back tears and said she didn’t know what to say to those hurt in the attack.
“If I’m crying, it’s for the people,” Bibeau reportedly said. “Not for my son.”

There is no greater dishonor that a man could foist on his mother than to engage in such vile and cowardly behavior. Those who kill in the name of God besmirch the name of their own family, and make the sacrifice of motherhood a sacrifice for the devil himself.

There could be no greater injury to one;s own mother than to become an Islamist and commit murder in the name of everything that is Holy.

Been there, saw that. Majority of the sentries are rejects from their department. Prior to long (name removed by moderator)ort stay, ships rush to qualify people for those watches. I remember seeing one guy who couldn’t even shoot a target about 10 feet away from him. However, they qualified him and sent him on patrol. My experiences were from the USS Kitty Hawk and Essex, all carriers.

Yes, sentry watchstanders all carry their weapons unloaded with no magazine in it.

That said, underway is different. Ships do have qualified people to man weapos for ship defense.
