Lots of stories but the Vatican usually won’t say one way or another. I know that during the Cuban missile crisis, John XXIII acted as a “conduit” at one point.Anyone know of the benefits the USA has recieved from having an ambassador to the Holy See?
I mentioned JPII getting our satellite pictures of his masses in Poland. Read there was a lot more cooperation in bringing down the Soviets than we may ever know. Much else made public yet? Any books out on the subject or which touch on it?
When Reagan was going to a summit, he was informed by Vatican sources that massive wheat shortages were going on and it enabled the President to use that to “push” his points.
Pius XII was able to give some good info to allies in Italy and to Dulles just before the fall of Rome.
Many times when things get “hot” between diplomats the Vatican is able to provide a neutral sounding board so pour a little oil on the bubbling waters.
You can read parts and pieces by reading biographies or memoirs of famous people involved at certain periods of time and Casaroli’s memoirs were really eye opening (at least the parts and pieces I got in English) however I don’t think they have been done completely in English yet although they are available in Italian.
I believe Vernon Walters had a really close working relationship with the papal staff.
