Should i tell my Mother?

Yes, i will ask the Priest on what to do next. I just feel great shame about keeping this from my Mother and i can’t shake that thought.

As i say, i will go to Confessions first and take it from there.
That is probably best. Lord, have mercy! :signofcross:

It might not be wise to tell her if it will only weigh her down. I do know, from my own experience, that after I told my parents of a recurring grave sin, I received help from them that I couldn’t receive anywhere else. If this is just a sin of the past, then I don’t see any need to tell your mom. 🙂
“i received help from them that i couldn’t anywhere else”

That’s what i keep thinking myself and of the main reasons why i would love to open my heart and tell her. I know your situation was different - your sin was recurring whereas mine was a one-off although that doesn’t make it right.

That is what I was thinking as well, and why I asked if you were younger.

The reason is that if you are struggling with, say, pornography, and you are 15, it is a good thing for your parents to know because they can help you with accountability and restrict computer access.

However, if you are in your twenties and, say, robbed a bank, I don’t think there’s really anything your mom can do about that, and if you tell her it’ll just be a huge emotional letdown.

Hopefully your priest can give you good advice concerning what to do with regards to your mother. If your mother is a loving understanding woman, I am sure that she could help you a lot. We all burden our parents at times. It part of being their children. 😉

Confess in the sacrament of reconciliation to your priest, NOT to your mother.

That will serve no purpose but to upset her and probably worry her or hurt her. If you want to confess something to your mother, confess the happy news that you are resuming the practice of your faith. The current penchant for tellling on all TV to the whole world has confused people. NO you do not tell your mother all your sordid sins.
👍 I agree. Telling her won’t change anything for the better. You are already planning to do exactly what she would advise. Why cause her any unnecessary misery?

Because of the bond between mother and child. I one has a loving and understanding parent, I am sure that they’d want to do all they could to help their child through any problems. It is part of being a family. 🙂

Disclaimer: Obviously some don’t have loving and understanding parents and should be wise in what they decide to tell them.

whatever you did, the sacrament of confession obliterates it entirely, it no longer exists. no post mortem’s after confession. it is gone, don’t resurrect it for your mother.
if a crime was involved tell your priest that and do exactly what he says.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply to my posts. I have made an appointment with a Priest this weekend for Private Confessions.

Is what you did a criminal action?
Unfortunately, it is.
Now - I’m not in law enforcement so this is just opinion but…

I believe this is yet another reason NOT to tell your mother. Depending on what it is and whether you are brought before the law…She could be implicated as an “accessory after the fact”…harboring…etc.
On the other hand she cannot get in to any trouble if she honestly does not know anything
about it…
So NOT telling her is more loving and more protective of her.

Peace
James

Ask the priest what he thinks about if telling your mother will help (if you not already been to confession).

Ok, point taken.

No, i haven’t been yet, i’m going this weekend so i’ll ask him then.

The guilt and shame i feel is getting too much and i cant keep living like this.

I should have mentioned, i suffer from depression and negative thinking which obviously doesn’t help. I worry constantly.

In what way could you perform restitution for this crime? could you repay for damages, or injury?

It is good that you have set up an appt to get to Confession. Make sure you get there.

Now, since it is criminal in nature, DO NOT tell you mother right now. I would suggest you speak with a criminal attorney, now. Your confession is sealed, your confession to your mother is NOT. So speak to your attorney and get their professional advise so that you do not drag your mother into this mess, and that you make sure all your rights as a citizen remain intact.

Hello everyone, i’m new to this forum. I’m guilty of mortal sin going back almost a year.
I did something unacceptable and shameful.
At the time, i was in a heavility intoxicated state and thus i was acting totally out of character, however i realise that is no excuse whatsover and my behaviour was wholly unacceptable.

Everything has recently just hit me like a ton of bricks and i don’t know what to do. I’ve been neglecting my Catholic faith and God for years but now i need to repent and seek forgiveness. I’m planning on going to Confessions very soon and i’m going to make an appointment for a private confession with a Priest.

I don’t know whether to confess everything to my Mother or not. As a devoted Catholic, what i’ve done goes against everything she stands for but at the same time, i feel she has a right to know and me keeping something so serious from her doesn’t sit right with me either. If i tell her, i know she’ll appreciate my honesty and know i’m very sorry and will offer me good advice but at the same time, i’m very scared as to what her reaction will be? As i say, she’s a devoted Catholic and i’ve really let her down.

Please give me advice on what to do people? Thank you!!
The only requirement is to confess your sins to your priest. You don’t have to confess sins to your mother.

Is it possible for you to tell us what kind of crime it was?
I don’t think it would be wise for me to say. The problem is, i genuinely dont cant remember much from it but i know i stepped out of line once or twice and it doesn’t sound good to say the least. My paranoia is in overdrive.

Ah, I see. Well, I’m offering prayers for you, and I hope that God will give you the grace to find forgiveness and make your way back to a normal life.
