Should marijuana be legal?

Honestly, the cartel leaders have shown us who they really are. They have shown us that they are willing to kill their enemies in the most unimaginably gruesome way…I honestly can’t imagine they’ll turn into angels and set up legitimate businesses once drugs are legalized.
I haven’t read the entire thread, but I haven’t seen one person try to “slap a badge of legitimacy” on the cartels, and what they do, and what they do to people in Mexico and sometimes here in the states. The cartels are the suppliers of Marijuana because it is illegal to grow the plant in every single square mile of the United States under Federal Law. Yes some states allow this under their own law, but if the DEA or other Federal Agents kick down your door you are going to jail, Period.

During Alcohol Prohibition the same thing happened, the Federal Government banned the substance and suddenly the underground world (Mafia) became the supplier of Alcohol to those that wanted it; overall there was still demand for booze. The government made the choices to criminalize Alcohol and Marijuana which FORCED Americans to purchase those items through underground channels if they chose to continue to use them. This isn’t slapping legitimacy on a cartel, people will do what they want to do no matter what laws are passed to try and prevent them from doing it. The government has forced people to go through underground channels to get these substances, and the same government can open up legal channels in the country like they did in the 1933 when Prohibition ended.
I mean people want to throw bankers and Wall Street tycoons in prison…but they want to slap a badge of legitimacy over the business dealings of brutal, cut throat murderers. I’ll never understand it.
I would need to know which Wall Street tycoons some people want thrown into jail. If they broke the law and contributed to the downfall of their company and the market then there might be grounds for that, but I would need specific examples. Comparing the illegal actions of people in Wall Street that contributed to the downfall of our economy to the supplier of a substance our government deems illegal is definitely like apples to oranges 🙂

If Alcohol and Tobacco are going to stay Legal then I have no choice but take this stance. As a former user I personally know which substances are less harmful to myself and society as a whole, and it happens to be the only one that is currenty illegal. If they ban them all then I can agree with that as well, but of course it will bring about a new underground market for booze just like in the past…

Oh, do we have another cradle Catholic here who thinks that just because he’s Catholic, he can’t go to hell no matter what he does??? And further, who thinks that there’s no temporal price to be paid for these deeds? They’re a dime a dozen… and they’re WRONG.

Sorry, there’s no icon in here for empty Cheetos ™ bags, or I’d have put them in too.

You know what us abstainers used to say in the 60s? Pot makes people stupid. It’s true. Seen it happen many times with my own eyes.

I’m not seeing a justification for imprisoning people here.

Well, you are the one that originally put all those potheads in the text box, not me.

I understand now. You don’t have a justification.
To what, put things in text boxes? 😃

IF there’s a law on the books, and it says that a person can’t smoke pot, and the penalty is jail if they do, THEN if a person is caught smoking pot, they can go to jail. It’s that simple.

However, my dog in this fight is driving intoxicated with pot or booze. IF someone gets themselves smashed on something and I find them weaving all over the road and nearly hitting me, I’ll call the cops myself, make a statement and stand right there and laugh while they go to jail. Got it?

Pot doesn’t kill brain cells. It is NOT toxic. Actually, a study recently came out showing a synthetic form of THC to actually GROW brain cells. Go figure.
Right. That explains what I saw with my own two eyes. Pot makes people stupid. And it ain’t the munchies doing it.

Way to back that up with factual information.
Seen it with my own two eyes. I came of age in the 60s before it was illegal. Imagine that.

LSD can put you in the state hospital with no return ticket. Seen that too.

And heroin will kill you and you won’t even know it. But first you’ll wander around the streets like a zombie, with your eyes out of focus, wetting your pants. Seen that too.

But all this is old hat. A person can kill themselves in a number of different ways, and this is just one of them.

My gripe is driving while under the influence of pot, booze or whatever. We need to keep the potheads off the roads.

I am fine with marijuana being legal but would still have laws against driving under the influence.

Big difference between LSD and heroin compared to pot.

Does it make any difference to you whether a law is just or not? If it doesn’t, then I’m wondering what your stand on the HHS mandate might be.

As long as you’ll be reporting and laughing at drivers who are equally – or more impaired – due to legally prescribed medication, stress, fatigue, or any other reason, then fine.

I’ve never understood the argument that says “well people still drink and drive and alcohol is legal! Why shouldn’t marijuana also be legal?”

So, on top of the issues we ALREADY have with prescription meds and alcohol, you want to add another unstable element like marijuana?
