I haven’t read the entire thread, but I haven’t seen one person try to “slap a badge of legitimacy” on the cartels, and what they do, and what they do to people in Mexico and sometimes here in the states. The cartels are the suppliers of Marijuana because it is illegal to grow the plant in every single square mile of the United States under Federal Law. Yes some states allow this under their own law, but if the DEA or other Federal Agents kick down your door you are going to jail, Period.Honestly, the cartel leaders have shown us who they really are. They have shown us that they are willing to kill their enemies in the most unimaginably gruesome way…I honestly can’t imagine they’ll turn into angels and set up legitimate businesses once drugs are legalized.
During Alcohol Prohibition the same thing happened, the Federal Government banned the substance and suddenly the underground world (Mafia) became the supplier of Alcohol to those that wanted it; overall there was still demand for booze. The government made the choices to criminalize Alcohol and Marijuana which FORCED Americans to purchase those items through underground channels if they chose to continue to use them. This isn’t slapping legitimacy on a cartel, people will do what they want to do no matter what laws are passed to try and prevent them from doing it. The government has forced people to go through underground channels to get these substances, and the same government can open up legal channels in the country like they did in the 1933 when Prohibition ended.
I would need to know which Wall Street tycoons some people want thrown into jail. If they broke the law and contributed to the downfall of their company and the market then there might be grounds for that, but I would need specific examples. Comparing the illegal actions of people in Wall Street that contributed to the downfall of our economy to the supplier of a substance our government deems illegal is definitely like apples to orangesI mean people want to throw bankers and Wall Street tycoons in prison…but they want to slap a badge of legitimacy over the business dealings of brutal, cut throat murderers. I’ll never understand it.
If Alcohol and Tobacco are going to stay Legal then I have no choice but take this stance. As a former user I personally know which substances are less harmful to myself and society as a whole, and it happens to be the only one that is currenty illegal. If they ban them all then I can agree with that as well, but of course it will bring about a new underground market for booze just like in the past…
