Should Pope Benedict Resign?

Come back and ask that question again when you have some actual proof.
Gossip and speculations by scandal-seekers and slanders spread by Mother Church’s enemies do not qualify as “proof”.
Excuse me, what I asked was IF-it was clearly hypothetical and I wasn’t accusing him at all.

One still has to wonder if all the changes that Pope Benedict has and will be making is rocking the boat of the progressive catholics.

He is the archpriest of one of the most prestigious parishes in the world and lives in a former apartment with servents. Its that’s a slap, please slap me a few times.
Oh pulllllleeeeeeeeze. When Bernard Law was outed as a big part of the cover up in the states, in 2,002…his life was not worth a plug nickle. Had he stayed here, he would have undoubtedly been murdered by someone. Look what happened to John Geoghan, one of the 3 true Pedodphiles in this scandal. He was murdered in prison.

The vast majority of these abuse cases are cases of homosexual abuse of pubescent & post-pubescent boys. When the world starts to deal with this truth, we may have some chance of putting this behind us. Pederasty is not something known only in ancient Greece:

I think everyone is jumping the gun on this. We don’t have all the facts yet. If the Pope indeed failed to protect the innocent by collaborating with others to move abusive priests from parish to parish, I do believe he should be held accountable. However, there is insufficient information at this point to confirm that it is indeed true.

I think more information needs to come to light. THe Pope should respond to the accusations and clear them up if they are not true.

Claiming this is a media attack is not beneficial. Claiming you only trust Rome is not beneficial – Rome was aware of many of the cover ups going on in other countries. We needs facts. Not emotion to determine the right course of action.

Let’s hope there aren’t any scandals in the future.
That would certainly be nice and I share that hope, but as people are people, there will most likely be something else for the media to stir up about the Church in the future. The Holy Spirit selected Pope Benedict XVI for a purpose and I’m firmly convinced that he will fulfil that purpose for the benefit of Christ’s Church.

*The sadness that we all feel for the victims of these crimes is almost overwhelming. When you add the possibly millions of people who are less inclined to find salvation through the Church, it’s heartbreaking. *

I’ve just read that 100 traditional Anglican churches in the United States have collectively applied to be received into the Catholic Church through the inspiration of Benedict’s invitation.

That’s not heartbreaking in the least. 👍:extrahappy:

Hopefully the network of pedophiles and their enablers has been broken up for good. What the hierarchy needs to do is what I understand it is at present doing: looking much more closely at the psychological profile of each seminarian over a period of 8 years, and removing candidates that show the slightest sign of being so perverse.

Certainly the bishops should be telling their seminarians that in the future they will not be protected by the Church; and all such charges, once made, will be referred to the police. That ought to make any pedophile seminarian think twice about spending 8 years studying for the priesthood only to be turned over to the police the first time he is caught fondling some boy or girl.

Or maybe they should follow the guidelines in Religiosorum institutio (Instruction on the Careful Selection And Training Of Candidates For The States Of Perfection And Sacred Orders)

That’s interesting - you’re blaming the media for the Church scandals? What would you have them do - hide it just because it’s the Church?

Here’s the problem with the Church - it’s the PEOPLE who are willing to give the Pope, the priests, all the clergy a pass on criminal activity.

It’s not the media, my friend. It’s people who would rather no one see or know the truth. People who demand justice from everyone else EXCEPT the Church.

The problems are internal, not external. Stop blaming everyone BUT the Pope and the Church.

Here is what has been troubling me…if Pope Benedict resigns, what will that say about the Church and the validity of the Papacy? Particularily to non-Catholics, but to all of us in general?

The sheep asking if the Shepherd should step down! Huh!

The media has never and probably will never love the Church. I will submit to those who are defending him well before I’ll ever give credence to the liberal media who think he should resign. So the answer is NO - Absolutely Not. He is such a gift to our Church.

So if, and I mean IF (and I admit it’s a huge IF) there is evidence of a crimes that have been committed, what should be done with the evidence? Ignore it? Pretend it didn’t happen?

Just to be clear, I don’t think he should resign. The Church isn’t a democracy. However, he and others should be held accountable, particularly to the law. Corporations carry liability insurance to cover malfeasance of company officers. I have no idea whether the Church carries such insurance, but certainly the Pope and the Church clergy are not above the law. And a coverup of criminal activity is against the law. Draw your own conclusions.

Accountability trumps credibility any day. The Church needs to be held accountable not only to its members but also to the general public if it hopes to retain any degree of credibility. Since the Boston scandals, it’s been one forced confession after another by the Church - and they have been forced. The Church has not been forthcoming in these scandals, just making the entire situation that much worse.
I think the whole thing is about to explode.

I for one think it would be a sign to the world that in the Church we believe in accepting the consequences and serenely bearing the temporal punishment for our crimes/sins.

What kind of message do you think it sends if a e strong case can be made that the Holy Father was knowingly involved in covering something up but he stays in power anyway?

I think if there is evidence sufficient to convict the Holy Father of a crime he should gladly submit to the secular authorities and set an example to the Church and the world that no one is above the law or beyond paying his societal debts. A fitting lesson from the servant of the servants of God.

But of course if he is innocent, and he may well be, then he should weather the storm come what may.

Either way Lord, For your servant Benedict XVI that he may guide us in truth and the power of the Holy Spirit, we pray…

A lot of people are saying Pope Benedict should resign! What are your opinions on this? I’ve just read a story about German people having little faith left in this Pope…
LOL. Europeans have little faith left PERIOD. Their churches are empty. I would not put much credit in their opinion. Let me quote for you what I just told another fellow who is doubting the Church:
IHeartBenedict said:
Remember that guy Judas? We don’t leave Peter because of Judas.

Do you think Jesus knew Judas would betray him? Of course he did. So why did he choose him? To remind us that there will always beJudas Priests in every generation. And do you think you will find a church full of sinless people elsewhere? You are being led by the nose right where the lame-stream media wants to lead you: Out of the Church.

For God’s sake, the people in the Liberal media are the LAST people you should be listening to… Trust God: Trust the Church. Do your part, and if other people screw up, remember that your faith is not in them but in God.

The Catholic Church is the true household of the Lord, and its right where you need to be my friend.
Could you imagine Peter quiting after he cut off a guy’s ear? Gimme a break. The Pope is the Vicar of Christ: He need not, nor SHOULD not, EVER resign

Do you think Pope Benedict would resign?
No. What’s interesting to me is the monk Malachy predicted that under the reign of this Pope would begin many tribulations. The next Pope is the last one on the list! Peter the Roman would reign under heavy persecution and tribulation and then, the end. Maybe we are seeing this.
