Should prostitution be legalized?

Well we have seen how Catholic governments have functioned in history…

From the Roman Empire, to Vatican city, from far left to far right, from democratic and populism to monarchy, there has been every kind of government, but there have never been necessarily Catholic governments per se.

They could have had the same government without Catholicism, so that their nature was not Catholic.

Supporting Catholicism and being the government are two different things.

The teaching of the Church is that fornication is included under the sixth commandment “Thou shalt not commit adultery”.
Thanks for the reference. I must point out that the Church here gives different definitions for the two words in question.

II. THE VOCATION TO CHASTITY
Offenses against chastity

2353: Fornication . . .is contrary to the dignity of persons . . .

IV. OFFENCES AGAINST THE DIGNITY OF MARRIAGE
Adultery

2380 The sixth commandment . . .forbids adultery . . .

Here we see that the Church recognises that adultery is forbiden by the Law while fornication is forbiden by the teaching of the Church, and not by the Law of Moses.

The laws of God are written in the human heart and universal, so even atheists have a hard time denying objectively good laws that are in harmony with God’s laws.

You can’t have truly good laws without it being based on God’s revelation somehow.

Okay, but II. and IV. are subheadings of the main heading “The sixth commandment” for a reason. There are separate definitions, but fall under one commandment. They aren’t separate commandments “thou shalt not fornicate” and then “thou shalt not commit adultery”, because the one is inclusive of the other.

Example: The word for fornication in the Bible is the Greek πόρνεια (porneia). It is used equally with adultery four times in the New Testament. Clearly it is equivalent.

TY. That is a good point. I pefer to take my perspective from the OT where YHWH goes to great lengths to define what constitutes legitimate sexual conduct in the hundreds of Laws that He gave to Moses as well as in many illustrative stories… Fornication and prostitution are mentioned, but are not condemned in the same way that having sexual relations with another man’s wife is.

Right, not on the same level, but both bad and prohibited.

The Vatican did function as its own government with its own laws a few centuries back. Nowadays it has really mellowed out into secular law.

For this reason, I do not support laws that punish the prostitutes. I do support what they’re doing in Sweden by punishing the clients.
Just like how we punish drug users but let the dealers go free.

Rule #1 of victimhood feminism:

Women are always the victims, even when they’re the perpetrators.

:woman_facepalming:Yep. Because those forced or tricked into sex trafficking are always the ones to blame.
Especially if they are forced or manipulated into it as children. Yep, definate perpretrators there!😒😐

Yep. Clearly, the pimps and johns are the real victims here, right?
I’m sure I could find a case somewhere out there of someone being coerced into being a john. That doesn’t mean that declaring johns generally to be the real victims of prostitution would be a rational thing to do.

God’s revelation to which religion/denomination?
There is only one God, and he has only revealed Himself fully in His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus has fully deposited his teachings in the Catholic Church.

Kay. Good luck forcing our doctrine on the other 6+ billion humans who don’t buy it.

Who said anything about forcing anything? About anyone not buying it? God doesn’t force his revelation. Catholics can create their own state and those who choose to live there can.

Where did you get the idea of forcing anywhere? This is a hypothetical, not talking about forcing things on specific countries.

Yes. If it’s legal it can be better regulated; the sex workers can be afforded more rights and protections.
